Steering around turns... - Click HERE for Original Thread

This post may be a bit premature, as this behavior is only now coming to my attention and I haven't done any troubleshooting yet.

Around extended consistent turns in one direction, such as a clover-leaf exit off one highway and an entrance onto another, I've been noticing a "pulsing" in the steering that causes me to repeatedly adjust my turn when I shouldn't have to. I feel a difference in the degree of control of the steering response. Since I am typically not changing speed during these extended turns, I tended to rule out variable-assist, would could potentially change the characteristics of steering control during a turn.

Any ideas?

mdxer46,

I would check the Tire Pressure, rear sway bar ( some said they had bars that broke), and last wheel balance.

let us know what you find,

Shimmy while turning is a classic symptom of wheels out of alignment.

Actually, it's not a "shimmy", but rather a feeling of having power assist for a few seconds, then not having it for a few seconds, and needing to compensate with steering around the turn. This does not give the feeling of a "shake" - more of an oscillation.

Bottom line is, when I am going around a long turn in one direction with a consistent curve, I need to continually move the steering wheel back and forth slowly and rhythmically to track to the curve.

I'll certainly bring this up at my 7500 mile service, but I wanted to know if any other '03 X owners find the same problem.

It sounds as if it might be related to these other observations:

Thanks - great threads. Most of the issues discussed on those threads do not apply for me (vagueness, etc) but there are comments about going around turns and feeling a difference in the amount of power assist. The poster that had the problem does not know how it was fixed. I'll follow-up with a question on that thread.

Any other ideas are certainly welcomed here!

Hey vicpai,
Thanks for looking out for me! I'll check that thread.
