Wood Dash Kits - recommendations? - Click HERE for Original Thread

For those that have installed wood dash kits could you let me know:
* who you used (all I know of is http://www.exoticwooddash.com)
* whether it's real or simulated
* how well it matches the factory wood
* how tight/snug/integrated it is with the surrounding plastic mouldings? Does it look after market?

Plus, any pictures would be greatly appreciated. I noticed a few in the Gallery photo section. Anyone know who's that is.

Thanks
I just found Acura4Life's thread on this from a couple of months back ( http://www.acuramdx.org/forums/show...d=4464#post4464 ).

Now the question is, which to go with: woodtrim.com, wooddash.com, or exoticwooddash.com.

Anyone have any thoughts? Plus, pics with black interior would really help. Thanks!
A bunch of us have used exoticwooddash.com, wooddash.com and joshua tree (I dunno their url).

Everyone's been happy. They're all pretty close. exotic and wooddash are identical from what we can tell. joshua has a different set of pieces. some are better, some are missing.

Match is as close as you can get for all of 'em. All are fake wood. All look stock.

When you go to the gallery, check the drop-down menu in the upper righthand corner and specify 100 days (it defaults to 30). You could do a search too.

Here are a few:

Just ask anyone who has compaired the two or three kits. Joshua tree (http://www.woodtrim.com) has the most complete trim packand. They all use the same 3m tape backing, and almost exactly the same burlwood pattern, but JT's kit covers more areas with higher detail and usually runs close in cost. I know they did a group buy on acura-tl.com for the 2000 models. Maybe we could look into doing it as well.

I have the Joshua Tree http://www.woodtrim.com and defintitely recommend them. Mike at Joshua Tree has been very helpful. I broke the piece going around the dash - trying to readjust my not perfect installation the first time (that Acura wants $125 dollars retail for and Joshua Tree replaced for $45) and can verify that it is pwood. It removes easily - even after two weeks on - just by pulling / peeling and then using 3m adhesive remover to get the rest of the junk off.

The exoticwooddash kit has more pieces (rear cup holder insert and 4 door bin trim pieces) while the Joshua Tree has an overhead trim piece that exoticwooddash doesn't... but the Joshua Tree is about $50 cheaper.

The Joshua Tree pieces have rolled edges which make for a clean looking installation. Maybe other folks can let you know about the edges on the other brands.

Check out their websites above and the pieces you get with each kit to compare which kit you want.

FYI, I emailed exoticwooddash asking if I could buy just the rear cup holder piece and they said no, I would have to buy the entire kit.

Good Luck
I liked MB's Joshua kit's overhead console/light trim -- it looked classy. Left that piece off from the exoticwooddash kit as it was just a slab. I do like the door trim and rear cupholder on the exoticwooddash.

For some strange reason, I seem to recall a seperate door molding kit from Joshua tree, no?

Insofar as rolled edges, I would characterize the exoticwooddash's as just OK. I rolled them a bit more when heating with the hairdryer as I thought a few of them were a bit squared off (primarily the door panel pieces).

MB -- were the pieces in the Joshua kit pre-molded == what I mean is did you have to heat and mold the instrument cluster or was it already shaped out of the box? On the exotic it's a flat piece that needs to be heated and molded. It wasn't hard, but it was time consuming.
BTW, I guess we MDX owners (and wannabes) are a pretty good community -- I just realized I've been helping a Raider fan. Blah!

S&BA - you don't plan on taking your fine rig (which are ugetting/do u have: silver or black) to the Coliseum, are u?

Everything from Joshua Tree arrives flat althouth he only piece that requires any shaping is really the one around the dash. The edges are already rolled when you receive them from Joshua Tree.

No separate door molding kit from Joshua that I'm aware of.

I was the first one here to do the exoticwooddash kit, when I ordered mine, they didn't even have it up on their web site yet...I like the kit, but I think that the Joshua Tree's added parts look real good, and if I didn't already have this one, I would go with the JT kit, that trim around the light and the sunglass holder looks great!
I called JT to see if I could buy just those two pieces, and the answer was ----Sorry, NO !!-----

As far as color, and grain match - I think that they are all the same, they all look good and you really can't go wrong with either.

Which kit is recommended for easiest installation? Which item in kit have you found to be the most difficult to install? I am trying to determine whether I should attempt to do all installation myself or hire someone to install some or all pieces?

Hey Worm, just wondering how did you roll the edges using the hairdryer? Be great if you can post a pic of the rolled piece. Thanks.
TheWorm
Here's a pic of MesaBeige's vent trim that shows the rolled edges pretty well. Just to make sure we're talking about the same thing, it's how the edges are somewhat beveled rather than the edge and the top (colored) piece being at a right-angle and square.

Imagine you're putting a piece of tinfoil over something -- you know how you press and "roll" the edge of the foil over the container to seal it? Same idea.

I installed the pieces first, then heated/re-heated with the dryer (to make it pliable), and used my thumb from about 1/4" from the edge of the piece and pushed firmly down-and-out[ (toward the edge) to "bevel" it a little bit. Hope that makes sense.

Perfectly makes sense. Thanks Worm. I ordered the wooddash kit because I liked the door trims as well as the one for the rear cup holder. I will follow your tip on "rolling "the edges as soon as I start installing. Thanks again.

This is for everyone who has installed a wood kit.
I've been seeing conflicting posts that the wood kits from www.exoticwooddash.com , www.woodtrim.com , etc are not REAL wood. According to the websites they sell real wood kits and simulated wood kits.

Is the MDX kit REAL wood?
Are you replacing the existing wood trim with new pieces from the kit?

There was a post a while back about aging of the aftermarket wood kits (if it is indeed real wood). Has anyone observed a gradual fading or darkening of the aftermarket wood kit in contrast to the fake wood?
wmquan
My understanding of the aforementioned two kits is that they are not real wood. Those vendors do sell some kits with real wood, usually meant to augment the real wood in some vehicles. But they don't make it for the MDX the last time I looked. Sorry.

I have the entire wood kit, except for the steering wheel. The price the dealer was charging for the wood steering wheel was too much. I think smoked wood would look cool with the black interior. If Joshua Tree or Honda World reads this reply, consider creating a smoked wood kit and a blonde wood kit for the saddle owners. Thanks
