Oh No, an 03 Touring + X with a new engine headed its way … - Click HERE for Original Thread

Hi All:

___I was at the Acura dealership this morning to have a free door ding removal performed on our X when I saw an 03 SBP X up on the lift with the engine, tranny, front suspension, wheels, and driveshaft lying on the floor. They had the engine broken down to the block and were inspecting it closely. I asked one of the CSR’s what had happened and he said it’s a long story and he had best not retell it … He did say it’s a problem for the dealership whatever that meant? Just before I left, I made a dash for the service bays and spoke with one of the tech’s in the next bay over. He said it was a porous block and that a new engine was going to be installed. I asked was it cracked or was it leaking oil right through the block? He said right through the block! This has only been reported in this forum a few times in my search of a minute ago but keep an eye out for it just in case … Here is a bit more detail on the problem/fix but I highly doubt this is what was going on with that particular brand new X?

___Hopefully this X owner will become a member and relive the experience of what happened to satisfy my own curiosity but in the mean time, you may just want to keep an eye on any oil drips coming from underneath the X just in case.

___On a more cheerful note, I also asked a receptionist her take on the X in the shop or in general. She said she had not heard of any major problems with the X like she has with some of the other models. I asked her for more detail about what she meant by “the other models” and if that included the CL/TL tranny’s? She said yes, CL/TL transmissions were a problem.

___Good Luck

Hi Wayne.

I had a simliar conversation with the receptionist at my closest dealer who was very open about the TL/CL issues AFTER Honda ackowledged it. When I asked her 3 mos. prior when there with a friend having work done on his TL the same receptionist played dumb. She's the one who schedules all of the service work and knows all of the customers by name on sight so I don't think it was just obliviousness that prevented her from recognizing the trend in TL/CL transmission work being done over several years.

Acura of Libertyville, Sage Blue 2003, Navi...that would be mine. In for 23 days as of today.

Hi Gmonigold:

___It is not too often that we run into the unknown owner of an X being discussed yet here you are in the flesh … I wish we could have met under better circumstances but in either case, I am glad to meet you. Yes, it was Libertyville that I saw your X being dismantled down to its core. I saw your 3.5 motor torn down to the cylinders lying on the floor next to the rest of your X’s drive train …

___At 23 days, I believe you have already passed the Lemon Law limit possibly?? Please tell us the circumstances of your X’s demise if you have the time.

___I wish you the best of Luck on the X’s repairs or a new one for your trouble …

___Good Luck

It's 30 business days for the lemon law or 4 visits, so I've still got another seven or eight fun filled days to go. Once the 30 days have passed I've got up to another month of waiting for Acura to make one last attempt at a repair.

I've already posted the details in another thread called "oil leak" I believe. Bottom line is dealer has been great in keeping me informed. Acura "Customer Service" has been useless at best. I'm still waiting for them to decide if it's the right time to discuss compensation for the loss of value in the vehicle.

Then again, I'm new to buying Acura. It's normal to get a rebuilt engine around 3500 miles right?:3:

Hi Gmonigold:

___I just read your thread entitled: oil leak.

___I only wish you had better luck but at this point, you know Acura is pushing those tech’s to bring it back to you in under 30 days … Even so, it is not the same X that you purchased. Make sure you pull up your X’s maintenance history. That documentation alone should provide you with resale relief in any legal or arbitrated fight given anyone interested in purchasing it later on down the line would want that information before you receive a cashier’s check. Once an engine replacement was discovered, the X would more than likely be suspect in most purchasers’ eyes even after the block replacement. I know I would anyway.

___Good Luck and please keep us informed as to the outcome.

Xcel, I think your wishing me luck may have produced a happy ending!?

The owner of the dealership told me that Acura has agreed to swap out and that they have an identical MDX on the lot which may be available Saturday.

Hopefully lightning (or pourous blocks) doesn't strike twice. Wary about Acura right now, but very, very happy with Acura Libertyville.

If they truly are trying to push it out before the 30 days I would be furious. Why not just issue the owner a new damn MDX and make the old one a play structure for the kids at the dealership. Amazing that Honda/Acura will spend all the money in wages and material to try and revive something that will never make the customer happy. Maybe when you pick it up pretend that the accelerator gets stuck and drive through the window of the sales floor and take out the GM's office and an NSX for good measure.Hmmmm.

Excellent news!!! Good luck with the new one!

Wow, now that is excellent news and the right and only thing they should do. They probably want to examine it under a miicroscope and find out more.

Excellent. You get to have that new car smell again!

xcel - That's funny, my SBP MDX was at the dealership today, too from around 10 - 2 and I remember mine being next to another SBP MDX....

Instead of my engine, it was my back end that was in pieces. I had Libertyville install a new back up camera because ours was the first batch with navigation back up cameras, and they were sometimes defective in cold weather and what not.

WOW, after seeing what they had to do to install a new one, it is definitely making me think that the extended warranty may not be a bad idea. The labor alone would have cost me a fortune on this one at 90 bucks an hour.

The camera is under the passenger side third row side bin, but that meant taking out EVERYTHING in the back. Once again, WOW.

The car was at the dealership last week for it's 7,500 maintenance and they had to order the part then, and I too was getting the free door ding thing. Matt the service guy was nice and popped out 4 for me for only the price of one ($75) so that was not bad at all.

Although that still makes me mad....4 dings in 4 months...

Hope my engine stays ok, and am looking for many more trouble free miles.

That is good news gmonigold! very good service from the dealer, and like someone here already said, it's the right thing to do. Good luck and post a pic of the new X.

Thats great news gmonigold !!!

I hate seeing the oil leak posts because is like living it all over again. I am sooooooo glad they are swapping you out to a new X .. and odds are slim the other one is a leaker too. Let Acura take the hit on the other one, its thier 40K mistake not yours!!!

Power to the ORGers !!! I really hope Acura reads these threads.

I hope you can put you full trust back into your NEW X as I did , I feel you wont be dissapointed.

Welcome to the 2X club !!!
or is that double X ?
X again ?
Dual X ?
Re-X ?

If this is the same Matthew I was dealing with, I gotta say that guy is the goods. He called me every day that my truck was in the shop even though he either had no news or no good news. That's not a fun prospect, but he did it anyway. Never mislead me as to how serious the problem was or how hard of a time they were having figuring it out.

Hi Gmonigold:

___I was quite pleased to hear about your outcome and in particular how Acura of Libertyville stuck with you through the ordeal. If you have read past threads in regards to dealership practices, AoL was not on the list of must visit dealerships around both Northern IL., nor the country. Within the last 6 months or so, Acura of Libertyville’s management appears to be placing a higher value on customer satisfaction and with that, changing their way of doing business from what I have seen?

___To help add some closure, I stopped by on the way home from work this morning to talk with the customer satisfaction rep (they actually have an employee for that purpose!) about this thread and discussed my view on how satisfying it was that Acura of Libertyville had turned a bad Acura experience around like they apparently have in your case. I gave him this threads contents in a 5 page print out as well as your Oil Leak thread in its entirety. Afterwards, I spoke with some of the principals about your X as well as the CL/TL’s. They have some items on the drawing board for the CL/TL owners with past transmission issues that should at least make those individuals feel that Acura of Libertyville is on their side in regards to the problems that have occurred as well as those that may show up in the future. It has to do with a service certificate for an amount that would make most enjoy the Acura experience all over again even if there were problems.

___Again, after reading about the outcome of your troubled X experience, Acura of Libertyville is making me a believer in their goal of satisfying the customer and I hope this trend will continue into the foreseeable future.

___Good Luck and congratulations on the arrival of your new X. I am sure this ones longevity will far exceed what you have seen from Acura in the last month or two ;)

If it does, I hope that corporate will understand that I feel completely the opposite about the service I received from them. I'm not sure why one would think it is such a good idea for a customer service group to have such an adversarial attitude. When my wife and I look for a second car, it will most certainly not be an Acura. I only wish Acura of Libertyville sold an additional line of cars.

I was treated the same way by Acura Corporate. What a disappoining company when the corporate offices can not even show some compassion to a product they have produced and do not stand behind, Im sure they feel this is what the dealers should be providing. In the corporate world its all about the quanity not the quality, they want results for thier shareholders and bottom line. Corporate America Sucks, a bunch of spineless buttkissers that are completely selfish.

I got a call back from Acura Corporate when I wrote the letter(s) to the CEO of American Honda. The woman who called me back was very cold and to the point. She was very General and would only answer a couple of my questions. ( I could tell she did not want to be on the phone with me ) before we hung up I insisted she give me her callback number because I had 40K riding on the verbal promise of this woman. Ugggghh... I hope they read this.

So .. bottom line .. I have a 40K SUV that has a problem from the factory that the dealer tried to fix and created many other problems not to mention visual damage of the vehicle. After a long battle ( mine was ) they finally agree to replace it with a new one but it will take 3 to 6 months for the new one.

Do I go get a lexus? No .. made for women and way to much with same options.

Do I get a mercades? Nah . looks like a high top shoe and just getting to a dealer is way across town ( Acura has 5-6 dealerships down here ) and more $

Chevy/ford/dodge/domestics? Nah .. sick of the very poor quality and lack of warranty for thier expensive products.

Isuzu, mazda, nissan? please .... no competition at the time.

I really loved the MDX .. the drive, the options, the price, the fact it has one of the the best safety and rollover stats. The stealthy look, solid drive, sedan like ride, etc etc .. I decided to give the new X one more chance knowing the odds of getting 2 in a row were unbelievable. A year and 1/2 later I still love my X. Now you said you would never buy another Acura and I felt the same way for a while but if the CL/TL did not have a bad rep for trannies, my wife would be driving one instead of the Accord we bought her last year.

To hell with Acura corporate.. and a bad engine mold. There''s a lot more blood and sweat and good people behind the scenes at Acura and SOME dealerships that still have my trust. If it was not for my dealer ( Rick Case ) I may have something different right now.

Good luck with the new MDX

Drove home the new MDX today. Again, Libertyville Acura was first class about everything. I'll keep an eye focused under the car for leaks, but I'm optimistic that I won't be driving all the way up to Libertyville again until the odometer hits 3750.

I notice some oil leak from front right side today. I barely have 300mi yet. Could you tell me more about yours? I've been searching for TSB, but its not there. Anyone knows where it is or knows what to do. I am calling the dealer 1st monday for sure.

Please help :(
gmonigold
I'm not sure they decided what mine was, but they suspected "pourous block". Best of luck with your MDX.

gmonigold,
I just got a 03 touring with a couple hundred miles on it, how many miles did you have on your mdx when you had the problem? I live in the north subs, would you rec. your dealer for service, im not happy with mine.:blingblin
gmonigold
The leak was so gradual, I'd be hard pressed to say when it started. I took it in around 3500 miles to get it serviced along with the first oil change. I took bought my MDX from Libertyville Acura and was pleased with the service there.
