locate stereo and navi security codes, backup critical navi data, connect harnesses positive to batterys + clamp screw, and negative to the screw on frame in front of battery, 10mm socket too.
zafer
the rest is obvious, remove 9006s, insert xenons, connect them to ballasts, connect driver side oem 9006 connector to connector on harness. you can self wrap the bulb to ballast connectors so they don't freely swing around. following photo is with 4300K xenon on the right, and silverstar in the left.

power down, replace bulk head trim, replace fogs, close hood, wipe off sweat from fenders and bumper, take a shower, take a test drive, and get dressed - not necessarily in that order :D

Thats it for now. Pat. Pending. Questions? Comments?

Hi Zafer:

___I have been watching your uploads over the last hour or so and I only hope I am not breaking into any more of your pic’s this morning … If so, I will delete this post and reply later on tomorrow. In any case, that was a very nice stealth install! How long did it take to pull and reinstall the Fog’s as well as the cooling reservoir? More importantly, was it a SOB to do all of the above? Looks like a 2 to 3 hour + job?

___As far as the hairy knee stuff … that was simply way to much information ;)

The fogs are held in only via one screw each. Check your manual regarding fog bulb replacement, it shows there how to take them out. There is plenty of cable so you don't have to disconnect them from inside first. Nothing holds the cooling reservoir in place, well, gravity does. Just pull it straight up, it'll slide off its stand. Place it to the side, hose attached. Only collecting the extra harness cable was a sob. The void behind the fogs is big, its easy to strap in the ballasts. Its easy to remove the bulk head trim, clips only. Lets see, I started before 7:30, and was done before 10, that includes taking many pictures, looking for my own shorter tie straps, finding new batteries for the camera, picking a gnd for the passenger side, thinking if I should just give up, and shorten the cables first, cleaning the litter box, checking the navi after accidental disconnect, inserting only one xenon to compare, then you have to wait for the halogen to cool off, to put the other xenon in. So if you don't fool around with pictures, comparison etc. its more like an hours job. If I had to do it again, I doubt it would even take that long.

___Thanks for the install tips and tricks. I will hopefully find the time to attack mine on Sunday afternoon?

WHOA!!!!!

Great pics!!!!

Wait till the bulbs colour **** after approx 100 hours and then you'll see the difference!!!

In regards to those wire taps, you dont need them. We throw them in the package just in case someone needs them for another purpose however to install the kit they not required.

Regards,

Steve

PS I will have a date for you guys waiting for the kit tomorrow.

Zafer,

Like steve said - buld will color shift after about 100 hours. I love the install pics and the commentary. You have me thinking about moving my ballasts behind the fog lights when I have a few hours where the wife ask why im doing that (she thinks im obsessed enough when doing research on somerthing). Good job.

Its never enough, is it? ;)

Maybe tonight. I need to find a dark and level street. I know someone mentioned what the camera settings (s and a) should be for pictures like this to get a true representation. Can someone please post it here (or a link to that post, I can't find it again) ?

I've updated the first picture to show where the fog light screw is.

Thanx! But what about the install? Any concerns with it?

Do you have any idea what a 100 hrs. is for our X? We probably haven't even come close to that since we bought it before Christmas. I don't drive it daily, hardly use it to commute, don't drive it much around town unless I need directions or we are 4+, don't take it places where parking could be tight or a problem, yada yada yada. We mainly use it for traveling, trips (or what BellSouth likes to call it - local long distance/toll area), or if we need to haul stuff. Oh well, I guess I'll just keep them on all the time when I'm driving day or night. ....so its going to take ~100 hrs. for the "colours" to match each other and be 4100K white?, `cause one does have a blue tint to it.
XenonDepot
Hello Zafer,

The installation looks fantastic. You definitely took your time on this - which is great!

In regards to 100 hours - you pretty much said it - it depends on how much you drive the vehicle. Lets take an average speed of 80 km/h x 100 hours you are looking at approx 8000 KM. If you are really in a rush to break them in try driving with the lights on during the day as well.

Regards,

Steve

PS Congrads =)
Dick at Incline
Well now let's see, I have an 80Amp hour Battery that I use for a trolling motor. I could connect the lights to that, and since they draw ~70 Watts total, that pulls about 5.6 Amps/Hr. Then let's see, I have a Battery charger with a 5Amp charge rate, so if I connect it to the battery as well, that means the battery will gradually discharge over about 130 Hours. Aha, I leave the lights connected for 4 days, and they've got their 100 hours and then I can install them. Seems like a plan to me!
XenonDepot
Dont forget that the lights need approx 20 A upon start up though.

Also, Its not like you wont enjoy driving around with them before the 100 hour mark...

Hmmm! They threw me off balance, wasted about 20mins. trying to find their use in the instructions and in posts here without luck :( Steve, you know what you could throw in that would be of use, an unwired 9006 plug. We've got to do something to protect the unused halogen connector on the passenger side now, else it'll just collect dirt and dust.

And the battery I use for Trolling is a Deep Discharge, capable of 400+ Cranking Amps. So Start up with the HIDs is a Piece o' cake.

Since I'm an engineer, like some other's on this board, what I really should do is age one HID for 100 hrs, and then see if I can photograph the difference. Or at the very least, see how I can describe the difference.

I just decided to order some High-beam PIAA Xtreme White Plus 9005(HB3) 4000-degree, to go with my new HID. Found them at a really good price ~$63 for the pair at: http://www.imotorgear.com/dept.asp?...t%5Fid=15090101

Hi Dick A I:

___When you get the chance … post pics of those high beams as well? Have you read any reviews on the PIAA 4000K 9005 Super White’s? I have the entire X’s interior dressed w/ PIAA’s, (4) twin packs of the PIAA 168 Extreme White Wedge’s for the (4) doors and Front and Middle row domes and (2) twin packs of the PIAA T6 Xtreme White’s for the Tailgate (interior light) and Rear dome. They are a bit too blue and appear to have a lower output vs. stock so I am not totally pleased with the result. They look nice but they do appear to have a bit less output is all.

___Thanks in advance

I just took PIAA at their word, when they said the Light output of the 60W 9005 is equivalent to 120W bulb. I guess it's worth 65-bucks to find out, When I get them, I'll take some Pix, leaving the standard bulb in one side and putting the PIAA in the other. For those pix, I'll remove the Low Beam bulbs, so we can see just the difference in the high beams. I just joined the board about a week ago, so now I need to figure out how to post pix?

Can the leads be shortned where required so that there is less excess wiring?
XenonDepot
Hey Zafer,

Unfortunately we do not include those with the kits. I personally just used electrical tape to cover up my other connector.

In regards to shortening wires, I would not suggest it as once the kit has been modified if there is ever a problem warranty might be an isssue.

Wayne, did you do it?

Hi Zafer:

___I just installed them a few minutes ago … It was a 1 hour and 30 minute job from start to finish including pulling the fogs.

___I can’t thank you enough for the “Ballast’s behind the Fog’s” and “pulling the plastic bulk head trim piece” tricks. Those were excellent solutions if I do say so myself! The only item I could possibly add is that I strung the wiring from the battery side to the passenger side and back to the battery side for the longer length of lighting harness. That way I didn’t have a bundle to wrap up. Another quick question that you may have figured out a better solution for … How did you connect up the + terminal wire and where did you place the fuse afterwards? The red plastic cover over the positive terminal is kinked up with the positive lead attached underneath it and I currently have the fuse hanging to the side :( I will look over all the pic’s to see what was done. I probably just missed a great solution in my haste to install tonight …

___By the way, I received 4300K HID bulbs in my Xenon Depot HID kit and they have the slight blue hue right out of the box. They come very close to matching the PIAA interior lighting which is what I was hoping for. As has been shown to us all so many times in the past, HID’s produce much more light than the OEM based Halogens. Now that I have experienced them for myself, I can say the same. I have never owned a vehicle w/ HID’s before but now that I took my 15.2 mile ride with them tonight, I am thinking about setting up the Corolla w/ a pair! These things really light the way and look great while doing so.

___Zafer, thanks again for the install pictorial. If everyone follows your lead, they will own one of the most superior X accessories I have purchased and used to date! Two thumbs up to you and Xenon Depot’s X HID kit!

___Xenon Depot, I do have a quick question about the passenger side OEM 9006 connector and not having a rubber insert or a type of weather clip to keep it covered from the elements? I would hate to use electrical tape over that connector given the install looks so clean up to now. Do you have any suggestions?

Hi All:

___I took my wife and youngest son to Culver’s for Root Beer floats in the X tonight just so I could hear what she had to say about the HID’s.

___Scotty’s first comment was “why are they are so white?” My wife’s comment following that was that they are so bright! Am I going to blind someone head on or from behind? I explained to her to the best of my abilities about the cutoff and once she saw it, she said these are nice. I than hit the brights and she said, “how come everything far away is dim and yellow?” I told her about the brights being the OEM Halogen’s and she said, “well that’s dumb” … In any case, I actually received a thumbs up from the two biggest critics which is a large plus in my book :29:

___I received a few long stares from some teenagers at Culver’s as well … It most certainly wasn’t me. Was it the X? Naahhh, it had to be the HID’s ;)

Hi Wayne,

Glad to hear my install instructions worked for you. I think I'll remove the bulkhead trim and redo the wiring like you so the extra isn't visible. I connected the + to the clamp leads tightening screw, and put the red rubber cover back on as it was. Currently the fuse is just hanging to the left of the battery; there's like a splash shield there. I too have to revise a few things, it was around 10pm when I finished that day. I don't use the X daily, so I'll get to it before it goes out again.

I checked my bulbs when you mentioned yours were 4300K, so are mine!? Steve? Didn't were order the 4100K kit? 4300K aren't even listed on xenondepots web site. ....does it mater?

By the way, since upgrading, have you noticed that it takes longer for the Maintenance Required light to go off if you leave the headlights in Auto mode?

The reason most of us are getting the 4100 K kit is that we want maximum possible light on the road. The 5000K will be a little bit more blue-white, and they will not give quite as much light. So if you want a slight blue appearance go for the 5000K, if you want max light go for the 4100K.

It's probably not too late to change your order.

I believe the 5k bulbs also have a coating on them. This could shorten the life of the bulb. Just my $.02.

The 4x00K bulbs will turn bluer (color shift) after a couple hundred hours of use. These 5K bulbs were originally designed as replacements for 4X00K bulbs that had already color shifted so that the replacement would match the older bulb.
kseto007
I find this photo of the 5000K HID and it looks quite nice.
I think I`m going to be happy with them.
I also read that they produce 3200 lumens vs my Sylvania silverstar 9005 1700 lumens. Thats almost double
jnk_tx
I went for the 4k's for the light but I think the 5k's are a great choice. I waffled between the two because the 5k's will still have much better usable light than stock and they may appear more like OEM would than the 4k's. I think we will all be happy. I am just anixous to get them and put them in. It's like Xmas came on one side of the street but not the other.

Considering the major improvement in light output against halogens, the difference between 4K and 5K HIDs is negligible in my opinion.

From what I've read, 4100k produces 3200 lumens and the 6000k Ultinon bulb produces 2400 lumens. These numbers are for Philips bulbs. YMMV!:D

I've seen numbers both higher and lower with respect to lumens, but I believe these are the correct numbers.
kseto007
Actually the standard 51W bulb puts out about 900 to 1000 lumens.
The 4100K puts out about 3400 lumens, 5000K about 3200 lumenand the 6000K puts out about 3000 lumens.
I`ll try to find the web site where I saw this.
phins2rt
kseto007,
Here is a very respectable site that shows lumens for 4100k, 5000k, and 6000k PHILIPS bulbs. The true 5000k philips are very rare and are NOT dipped. Any bulb that has a blue coating will not have the output of a 4X00K bulb. It will still be an improvement over stock, however.

Most vendors, up to now, will dip their 4X00K bulbs to get the 5000k temperature. The true Philips 5000k bulbs should be more readily available anytime now.

Has anyone driven with these in the fog?

Do you get more cut through the fog or do you get more of a white out?

Since these take a second to start up, what happens whe you flash your lights?

Has anyone put these in the fogs? How did that turn out. I am considering just putting them there.

In fog you get some scatter-back from hitting the fog. Fog or no fog, the field of light coverage exceeds the stock lighting by far.

You don't use them for hgh beams, so no flashing of HIDS. Besides the delay (a few seconds to full brightness), it would tend to shorten the life of the bulb. There are some aftermarket units that either move the bulb with a solenoid, or a mirror so they act like high beams by changing the position.

Most people who put them as fogs, also have them as low beams, but feel free. More light still spells safety to me, as long as they are aimed properly.
Skewbeedeaux
I believe the most important concern that WHYNOTMDX brought up was HID restart time; specifically, if I've been driving with High beams, then switch to lows, will it take a few seconds to arc up (driving by brail for a few seconds)? Or are HID ballasts precharged for instant restart?

It's not a big deal, who in their right mind would drive when it's pitch black before turning on their lights? By the time you back out of your garage and get ready to turn down the street they are at full illumination.

DaleB,

I failed to adequately communicate my question so I'll try again through an example...

Lets say I'm traveling on a dark mountain road using my high beams. I then switch to HID lows when opposing traffic nears. When lights are switched from high to low, highs should go off immediately. But if lows take a few seconds to arc up, am I left without headlighting for that brief period?
XenonDepot
Hello,

I apologize for my delayed resonse...

DaleB - You definitley know your stuff!!

In regards to your questions:

1) The 5000k kit does your coated Philips 4100k bulbs. The rating on the non coated 4100k bulbs is 3200lm. It is fair to say that the 5000k kit will not be as bright as the 4100k kit however they will still be by far brighter than your stock halogen setup. Furthermore, its a question as to whether your primary purpose for getting HIDs is strictly light output or light output and some colour..

2) The 5000k bulbs were manufactured for warranty purposes given the Philips bulbs' tendency to colour shift.

I'd just like to thank everyone that participated in this group buy and you will have your kits shortly!

Skew,
Don't forget that the lows stay lit when the highs are on.
No "arcing up delay".

Hi Skewbeedeaux:

___Just a heads up … As Shootist already mentioned, the Highs and Lows are on at the same time. This is how you are going to really tell what the HID’s are doing for you when you hit the bright’s. Everything in the distance has a yellowish dim hue whereas the HID’s are still bright as can be close up.

___When the HID’s initially light off, they do so immediately but reach what appears to be full intensity in ~ 3 to 4 seconds. At least that is what it looks like to me. The initial amount of light coming from them after light off is easily good enough to drive with.

___Good Luck

Sorry, if I sounded a bit sarcastic. No problem Skew...lows remain on when highs are turned on. They never go off in any on position.
However, if you do install HIDs in your fogs be aware when the highs go on, the fogs go off.

I don't know how it is on other cars with separate lows and highs, but unfortunately with the MDX (at least `03s), when you use your flashers, both the lows and highs flash, unless your lows were already on. Its probably a good idea not to flash if your low xenons aren't on already.

An excellent point! There are not many situations where it would be necessary to flash your headlights if they were not already on.
But in an emergency, anything goes!

I would not expect a major decrease in HID bulb life unless you make it a habit.

Have noticed a couple of entries in this topic about adjusing of the headlights after the installation of HIDs. Was wondering about those of you that have recently installed your sets - have you adjusted 'a couple of turns' to bring the driver side in a little? Or have most/all of you left them as is and have not been getting flashed? Expect to receive my kit from the last group buy this week and am curious............

Or have most/all of you left them as is and have not been getting flashed? Expect to receive my kit from the last group buy this week and am curious............

(originally posted this as a seperate thread in error, couldn't figure out how to move over to this topic...sorry for the duplicate post)

I know I recommended before to check your headlight alignment against a garage door, etc. and then mark the points with tape.
Then after you install your HIDs you can see if they match, or tweak them.

Mine matched just fine (different brand). I think it has been reported any differences have been very slight.

Hello,

Please expect your tracking numbers by Aug 5/03. I apologize for the delay. Only 2 4100k kits have shipped however there have been orders for the 5000k and 6000k kits.

Hey Zafer nice work on the installation of your HIDs.
Just have a quick question, why did you have to pull out the fog lamps to install the ballast behind them?

Can you just drop them in from behind from up top.

Hi Kseto007:

___You can reach the location where the ballasts are installed behind the fogs but you will work like a SOB to get two zip-ties looped around two different areas of the X’s frame work, through the ballasts two protective casing holes, and then get the 2 Zip-ties connected if you don’t. Five minutes to pull the fogs will save you at least a half hour or more of frustration.

___Good Luck

Steve,
The HID can be tracked on Aug 5! Aug 5? But my credit card was charged on July 3, which is almost a month ago. Please explain the delay! I'm surprised and disappointed that it's taking this long to get my HID.
kseto007
 O my GOD !!!!!
And why did I wait 7 months to get this:confused:
When I turned on the lights I could not beleive the differance. They look just like my 02 CL Type S lights. They even give off the same low humming noise from the ballast.

Many thanks to Zafer`s great tips.
The grounding for the passenger side under the reserve tank was a good one. I was also able to install both ballasts behind the fog lamps without removing them. I just had to double up on the zip ties. That was the most time consuming part of the project.
It took me a little over 2 hours. :2:

I just have to wait till sun down to see if the lights need any adjustments.
kseto007
:( Sorry about your situation dfj. It sounds like your 4100K HIDs are on back order, it did seem like alot more people ordering that kit over the 5000K.

 Stay cool, once you receive and install them, I`m sure you`ll be so happy you will forget that you waited this long.

Good luck

Did you by any chance take pics during your installation? Also, are there any other time saving tips you can share with us please?
