| ....interestingly, upon completion the pattern looks normal against the wall........am wondering if the bulbous cone that the bulb hides behind is somehow just something to prevent someone's naked eye from looking at the bulb when on. I did loop a zip tie around it and pulled it up to normal position....then bounced the shock a couple of times and it declined to an inch lower, revealing the bulb. It appears to not be completely brokent (yet). And apparenlty isn't moving. Checked hondacuraworld, nothing offered but have sent them an email. Called dealer, they said new unit was slightly north of $200....with a $160 install. Weighing options........... |

I installed my XenonDepot 4100K HIDs last night. Took about 2hours. Much of time was spent on trying to predetermine cleanest wire routing and attachment point for extra wiring. I followed Zafer's method (Here, midway down page) and had no problems. A couple modifications I made follows...
I added a tooth lock washer to both grounding leads. As contact with the bolt (grounded by threads), not body, is what's important, I placed the washer between the bolt and spade lug. Although not necessary, tooth lock washers provide good electrical contact and friction grip. |
|
|
| Skewbeedeaux |
Another modification was to place a small piece of foam tape under each ballast. This insures that both areas where ballast contacts the body are padded. I just cut about 1 inch off the strips included in my HID kit. Again, not necessary, but just added protection for ballasts.
Because Zafer had a good pic of the location, I've used his pic to illustrate. |
|
|
| Skewbeedeaux |
I didn't like the fuseholder left flopping around, so the last modification was to mount it to the battery shield (or whatever it's called... see pic).
Also, notched the battery clamp cover so it would seat properly with HID lead attached. |
|
|
| Skewbeedeaux |
| I just placed a small notch in the battery shield with tin snips to create a tongue. No measurements taken, just lined up with back of fuseholder. Thickness of shield offers perfect friction fit. |
|
|
| Skewbeedeaux |
| Lastly, I checked the beam height against reference marks made on my garage with the stock halogens; I found that the HID beam projected lower. Each needed about 2.5 revolutions of the adjustment screw to bring beam up to old height. After a drive around the neighborhood, I ended up dropping the beam about 1 revolution. |

Yes, I almost felt guilty that I was putting out that much light. I was lighting up signs much farther down the road than with stock halogens. So to prevent glaring oncoming traffic, I tuned the beam a little lower than factory height. |

Posted this on a separate thread but meant to put it here!!
I'm not sure how I feel at the moment. I received my H4 6000K HID kit from Xenon Depot last week and was excited that it came quickly and that the package looked great. I started last Saturday morning with a couple of coats of Zaino on the Silver metallic Honda Pilot and started the HID install that afternoon.
I installed the bulbs and found good places for the ballasts and zip tied them into place. I located two spots opposite the ballasts for the control units and started to plug in the connectors when my problem started. The control unit that I was installing on the left bulb would not connect. Upon closer inspection the male connector on this control unit was smaller and of different configuration to the
control unit that I was installing on the right side.
I tried to see if maybe the other bulb had a different connection but they were both the same so I had one set of bulb and control unit connection that fit great and the other set was incompatible.
Suffice to say that my Saturday was shot plus I had my wife looking over my shoulder and pretty much putting the proverbial knife in my back since I had talked about this install the whole week.
Since Xenon Depot was not available over the weekend I started my contact with them on Monday. With subsequent e-mails, phone conversations and downloaded images I'm still awaiting resolution to my problem.
Bottom line is I have a half installed HID system in my Pilot and I still do not have the correct control unit. And to top it off the power went out on the East Coast including Canada!!!!!
Sorry for the long rant but I just had to get this off my chest. |

| Some of you may recall my self-induced HID dilemma of a bent headlight diffuser caused when I accidentally bent it down installing the new Xenon bulb. System worked, but passenger side light very unfocused and much wider beam pattern. New headlight unit at $213 and $160 install were avoided this morning when my Acura dealer was able to 'open up' and resecure the loose diffuser. So they can be repaired.....not sure what he meant by 'open up', since unit is mostly sealed. Suspect when you take off the 3 very small screws that hold the bulb holder in place there's access below somehow. So, bottom line, I can now enjoy my XenonDepot experience as it was intended....and there was no cost to me. |

Nice mods. Glad to see that my install technique is getting used and improved upon too :) I don't recall an issue with the battery clamp cover though, I lined it up the the + cable, and the rubber cover fit snug back on. |

| Finally received my control unit/harness from Xenon Depot and even with all the delays it was worth the wait. The 6000K H4 Hi Lo kit looks good on the Honda Pilot. The road coverage is good and doesn't seem to blind other drivers since I haven't been flashed yet. The color is awesome with just the right amount of light blue hue and it definitely stands out when I'm driving. I haven't received some many looks since I first bought the Pilot. I have been posting here as opposed to the Pilot site since here is were I have seen most of the info. Thanks again Acura MDX org! |

My HIDs finally came in from Xenon Depot. It took a while, I was a little nervous, but Steve held my hand and came through in the end! (Thanks Steve) Since Xenon Depot goes through PayPal you could potentially get billed before any product is shipped...which is exactly what happened to me, which made me a little nervous.
In any case, they arrived today, and, through the help of this forum, I was able to install them in about 2 hours. Thanks to zafer for his detailed installation tips and Skewbeedeaux for the additional tips. I fired them up and they look great! I had Silver Stars, which I moved to the fog lights. The 5000K HIDs are orders of magnitude brighter and "cooler" than the Silver Stars.
Just a note, before you get started on this install, make sure you have...
(1) 10mm socket for various bolts.
(2) At least 8" extension for the socket (needed to remove fog lights)
(3) Some electrical tape. Used to tape up unused passenger side headlight connector.
(4) Flat head screwdriver to remove plastic engine cover.
(5) Hack saw blade if you want to install the fuse holder onto the battery tray. You'll need it to cut a notch on the tray.
(6) Some good lighting (I had a portable fluorescent light) to see in the engine bay.
(6) About 2 hours if you work slowly. |
|
|
| Skewbeedeaux |
Thx, Arnel-
Yup. Zaf found a really nice spot for those ballasts. Regarding the notch for the fuse, the tin snips(if you have a pair) would be less messy than a hacksaw blade. |

| Another alt of making the notch for the fuse is to burn a nail and melt it on the batt tray. |

Hi XenonDepot:
___I emailed you privately but since it’s the Holiday Weekend here in the states, I can only hope you log in to read new posts to this thread every once in a while …
___I had an ~ 1/2 hour of night hwy driving on my way home tonight with only high beams given the low beam HID’s would not fire off. In other words, I have a dead set of HID's in the MDX right now :(
___The fuse to the battery in the XenonDepot supplied power harness to the ballasts is Ok. The MDX’s light fuses and Relays were OK. The High Beams also worked fine since that is what I had to drive on. Just no low beam HID’s. I do have a volt meter but something appears broke on the ballast side of the equation. Why would both go at the same time however? I replaced the HID’s with the OEM Halogens, disconnected the Xenon Depot harness and all connections, reconnected the OEM Halogens with the OEM wiring harness and the low beams work fine so it’s not on the MDX’s electrical bus or harness that isn’t working. The HID Bulbs appear solid as well except for the small gas space inside the bulb where it’s just gas of course.

Question ... when you gues raise/lower the lights a "turn" .. do you mean a turn of the screwdriver, or a full turn of the round thing the screwdriver is spinning? I'm counting screwdriver rotations, but it doesn't seem to be doing much, and wonder if I'm looking at the wrong thing. |

| I installed my 5000k hids yesterday from Xenondepot and very happy with it. I followed Zafer's method(thanks) except I moved the ballasts behind the fogs further from the vent (further left on the passenger side and further right on the driver side) since the ballasts are not water proof. Should I be concerned about the rain? A member has mentioned that the 5000k bulbs have a shorter life compare to 4100K. Does anyone know what is the life expectancy for a 5000k hids bulb? |

I have just ordered my Aspen White on Monday, and am now contemplating Xenon's. I also have noticed many have gone of you went with Xenon-depot kit for your hids......I can't decide whether I should go with Xenon-Depot or Proxenon. I kind of like the fact that the Proxexon kit uses the factory harness and there is no cable to the battery and there a re no unlugged cables left over......the other components seem the same between both kits.
So my question is "were there any specific reason's you chose the depot's kit over proxenon? Also what temp bulbs did you get. I currently drive an 2002 rl which has factory hids and I am looking to achieve the same look and brightness along with the same blueish look. Not looking to start a war on this site just some candid feedback.
This site has been a wealth of knowledge
Thanks in advance

| If you go with Proxenon, and end up using the cars current wiring and fuse, can it carry the load required for the xenons? XenonDepot's wiring harness has its own fuse and relay. I think the xenons actually draw less then the halogens while they're on but the initial power-up current is too much for the halogen wiring and fuse. :8: |

I have a McCulloch kit, and it has performed flawlessly for over a year now. It is self-contained with propietary ballasts, that have short circuit protection built-in. Personally, I favor that over external battery and relays to be wired.
At 35W the load is not a big consequence. But you will never know how well something is designed, or built until it fails.
In any case, if I was shopping for a system now, I would look closely at Xenon-Depot if only because of the excellent customer support.
As long as they keep working, I can see no big difference in the light on the road. Junky kits with poorly aligned bulbs, etc. seem to be a thing of the past. |

Hi Guys, I just installed my H11 HID's on my 2004 x from xenon depot last night and they look great. As for proxenon I ordered the H11 kit it was horrible an I still have not got credit for the kit yet. Well I finally got around to installing my ZenonDepot HID kit. Thanks to Zafer’s instructions the install went very smooth. Few weeks ago, I read in the San Jose Mercury news Auto section that the benefits of Xenon lights and other types of HID lights do not usually equivalent to the extra cost involved.
The article mentioned that the problem with regular Halogen lights is not the intensity but the distance of illumination. That is the reason that traffic citations are much higher at night because speeding will cause you to exceed the capacity of your lights.
The article also claims that high end cars like German and Luxury Japanese cars uses Xenon as a way to rectify this problem (German Highways have no speed limit or higher speed limits).
Again the article referred to a study by one government safety institution in Europe, which proved that intensity have very little effect on safety (within driving age of 25-35, the aggressive drivers category!!!!) Whereas the types of lights that extended the illumination distance improved driving and comfort levels. The study compared Xenon lights with Halogen light and projector lenses (similar to the ones used on 04 MDX) and showed no benefits on using the Xenon lights. The article also elaborated that the long life of halogen lights out weighs any other HID light.
That is probably why Acura chose to use the projectors on 04 MDX. |

There is a lot of truth in the above article. However, it (as well as some after-market bulb fanatics) overlook the fact that even at closer distances HID provides better overall lighting. You just have to be next to car with conventional halogens vs. HIDs to see a very obvious difference in the total light output as projected on the road, even assuming the same maximum distance.
If projection lamps move the maximum distance further, all the better. It is certainly a step in the right direction. I have no idea if it also provides better overall illumination which is certainly important at ALL distances and speeds. |

| The nice thing about the MDX is that they keep both low and high beams on when high-beam is selectd. That's approximately 230 W of lighting power out on the road. Unfortunately, as we get older--I'm 68-- our eyesight decreases and extra light really helps alot. I put Xenon-Depot HID lights on my '03 Acura and they work really great. Lots of extra light on the road, including well out to the sides. The Road center-line and Road signs show up a lot better with the HID. Also, I live in the mountains so I am always on the lookout for Deer, and other smaller animals at night--HID works great for this also. |

DaleB and Dick at Incline had a good point when it comes to more light is needed.
the issue is that higher intensity sometimes creat a problem for other drivers.
You know when you are driving at night and some of these cars on the opposite direction shine their lights in your eyes.
I live in the hills area, San Felipe road in Evergreen area of San Jose where ther are no lights(DaleB may know that area) and I really hate those cars with HID lights that almost blind me on that road.
According to that article, the increases intensity doesn't help much. Where as the increases illumination distance help a lot. It is well said about when you are older, you need more lighting. I am almost 36 and I feel that I need more lighting when i drive at night.

I understand your concern about shining lights in your eyes in the hilly area. I have never been flashed, so I think the HIDs in my '03 are adjusted OK. When I encounter on-coming bright lights I look at the right side of the road until the other driver is past, so as to not be blinded. This works well, even if I can't get the on-coming to dim his lights. |

Ditto on Dick's comments. I'm not 68 and I still have 20/20 :-), but I still really enjoy the extra light from my HIDs. (I'm 36 going on 25.) I think the extra light helps...and damn it, they're COOL looking.
Note, I live in Evergreen (San Jose) as well (top of Delta Rd.) ...I know there's at least one other Silver X with HIDs in this area and his/her HIDs never blinded me while driving. :-) |

Hi Neighbor, arnel_lim.
I know Delta Road and it is very bright compared to San Felipe.
Try driving uphill, south on San Felipe past the Meadows till you get to the California Creek development and you will know what I mean. We have a couple of 04 MDX in my neighborhood, which are OK, even an older MDX (red probably 01 or 02) that has HID with no problems.
I am talking about some of the newer trucks, M class and other cars with Xenon lights.:o |

I know the road well, as well as the winding route around Evergreen college. That's the road I used as my 'test case' for HIDs. I had installed them and done before and after pictures. The two most notable aspects were the fact that distance was not much greater than with std. bulbs vs. the HID.
However, there were notably fewer blind spots or shadows with the HIDs. More light was on the edge of road compared with the halogen bulbs. It is this total improvement in 'overall' illumination that impressed me. Greater range will do nothing for objects which could be animal or human that are tough to see on the side of the road.
Quite honestly, if I were to do this again I would seriously consider the Xenarc outboard auxillary HIDs and only use them for fast highway use or when travelling on poorly lit roads. Turning them off and continue to use the standard, or SilverStar (or equivalent) for city street driving. |

___The fuse to the battery in the XenonDepot supplied power harness to the ballasts is Ok. The MDX?s light fuses and Relays were OK. The High Beams also worked fine since that is what I had to drive on. Just no low beam HID?s. I do have a volt meter but something appears broke on the ballast side of the equation. Why would both go at the same time however? I replaced the HID?s with the OEM Halogens, disconnected the Xenon Depot harness and all connections, reconnected the OEM Halogens with the OEM wiring harness and the low beams work fine so it?s not on the MDX?s electrical bus or harness that isn?t working. The HID Bulbs appear solid as well except for the small gas space inside the bulb where it?s just gas of course.
