I heard if you zip a picture in winzip the picture will have less KB. How do you use winzip??? How do you zip a file and make it smaller??? I need :1zhelp:
mdxxxx
1. After downloading the eval version from http://www.winzip.com/ ... install it. (the install program's default settings will handle the file associations)

2. Within windows explorer, select the desired file, then right click. You'll see option in the menu "Winzip"... the next option is "add to zip file"... thats pretty much it... too simple...

the winzip dialog should prompt you for a name. The program will add the .zip file extension. The .zip file will contain a compressed version of the file(s) you selected. (double click on the .zip file)

Extracting the file is easy as well. I just double click on the zip file, select the file(s) I want to unzip, and drag them to an open windows explorer folder that I want to file(s) to go. Thats it...

MDXXXX, nice explanation.

...is NOT going to be a postable/viewable picture. You will need to create the zip archive (as described above) and if/when you want to view/post the "picture" contained within you will need to 'extract' it from the archive (again, as described above).

The usefulness of zip files is somewhat diminished by: a) the gigantic hard drives that are common today b) the widespread availability of high speed connectivity c) the decision of many email admins to disallow receiving of zip files.

I agree with renov8r that zip files are becoming less and less useful as hard drives get bigger and bandwidth increases but...

Zip files are useful for uploading pictures to the Gallery here on Acuramdx.org. If you put your pictures in a zip file and then upload the zip file to the gallery, you are allowed double the space (2 MB vs 1 MB for individually uploaded pics). I was playing around with this over the weekend... if you upload a zip file of pictures, you are presented with a nice little interface where you choose which ones you actually want to post, assign titles, etc. (it's pretty slick).

Actually zip doesn't gain you much with jpeg files. I just zipped a 800KB picture and zip brought it down to 798KB. This was version 7; does version 8 do more?

Niles:)

Agreed. I think jpegs are compressed pretty well to start with. But.. in the case of uploading to the Gallery... it's not the compression that makes a difference rather, just the fact that you are uploading a single zip file rather than many individual files.

2002 AcuraMDX: The zip files are for making files small enough to move around easily (particularly with email or FTP). They have to be uncompressed to be used (viewed, etc)

You want to get a program like Photoshop (pricey) or JASC's Paintshop (cheap) or LVIEW (free) that will let you reduce the resolution of your JPG. This increases the compression (at somewhat of a loss of picture quality), and lets you save a file that is much smaller.

rjmitche is right - JPG is a pretty efficient compression format already, so you don't gain much by zipping them.
