How's that third row seat?? - Click HERE for Original Thread

My main reason (I have others) for purchasing an MDX is the third row seat. My family has five members now and we find ourselves needing more seating on many occasions. Our Jeep just isn't doing the job anymore and purchasing a minivan is against my religion (ha ha). I sat in the third row seat and was impressed by the size and I'm 6.0'. I would ask you current owners, how do you like that third row seat? Do you use it often? Kids only? Thanks for the input.
That's the best way I can put the function the third row seats provide. We've had friends visit recently and we were six. So we tried, 2 in front, 2 in middle, 2 in back. I kept one of the middle seat dropped down, so that the 6 ft guy could seat comfortably in the last row. And I didn't hear him grumble at all. On several occassions smaller people have used the seats just fine. Kids, for sure, will be at ease back there. I think the tall guy had remarked, oh cool, I'm not clustrophobic back here, there are windows all around. Anyway, As you said, there is a *decent* amount of space back there even for tall people. I think the only complaint I have heard is the inconvenience in getting in/out of the car for 3rd row passengers, specially while getting out.
Adults in the back are fine on short trips, eg when relatives are in town and we want to go out to eat in one car. I'm not so sure an adult would want to be back there on a long trip, eg an eight hour drive. Although we have not been on such a long drive yet.
Believe it or not I sat in the third row seat coming home from New York City to New Jersey and found it VERY comfortable.

Mind you, I'm 6 foot - 180 pounds.

Lots of room and NOT cramped at all.

I am SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO impressed with the third row and I have sat in and have experienced it first hand now. Plenty of room and windows back there.....AWESOME !!!

Love my baby !

I agree with everyone above, I used it these weekend when my wife and I were visiting some family. I had seven people, two guys 6'0" in the third row. Saved us the need to have two cars fighting through LA traffic. I can't recommend it for a drive up the coast, but for getting around town you can't beat it.
... and how's the third row for the baby seat, from safety perspective?
By putting the baby (forward facing toddler seat, not infant) seat in
the back row, the middle row can be used for adults, which is much more
convenient - but not at the cost of added safety risk for the baby!

appreciate any inputs on this

IMHO...center of any vehicle is safer than fore or aft, for kidlet purposes. Precious cargo should be seated as far away from an impact point as possible. I'd also consider immediate accessibility in the event of collision and that third seat could be tricky and is surrounded by lots of glass.
Acura4Life,
I don't agree with you at all. I did check this out just now at the dealer and I tried both rows. I think to come up with 3 row, they have reduced leg room for the middle row and also to keep both to the floor level when folded, they have reduced the height of the seats(both 2nd and 3rd row. I am 5'11" and I have tried both seats and I don't know how come you were able to feel so comfortable. But love this SUV though because we are just couple with 2 kids. A perfect fit with plenty of cargo space.

For Adults both 2nd and 3rd row are just for short trips only.

By the way Clair Acura in Walpole, MA has one Mehagony with all options loaded except Gold package for 47, 890(may be more) for immediate sale. I was like...

47, 890 vs 35,000 invoice price..........I can imagine how these guys are trying to make money.

another negative mark from me... for that price not having HID or Xenon. I don't understand this. They do offer this as standard on 30k cars but not 40k MDX.

Glove box so huge for looks but when you open you can't put any thing may be just for manual.

I asked him to show navigation, but came up with an excuse.....Battery might have dead.

Said nothing but thanks and walked out.

not an offensive, new buyers like me would appreciate prompt positive and negative thoughts but not cooked up messages. I will buy it though when I feel comfortable with these dealer price games.

One of the primary if not the primary reasons we bought this vehicle was the 3rd row seat. We have three children and the grandparents were in town last weekend and the seven of us fit perfectly.

I don't know if adults would be too comfortable back there since it pretty cramped and really designed for children. I have not tried it myself though.

For what it's worth, I'm 6'2" and am perfectly comfortable in the 2nd row of seats. I find the 3rd row is a bit cramped, but is much more comfortable than the third row in my brother's Montero.
The third row seat is the reason we even looked at the MDX in the first place - that got us in the door and the more we learned, the more we liked it. Regarding the legroom, I don't know what everyone is complaining about - it's no better or worse than the back seat of lots of cars. I love the "split" option - we've only had our MDX 1 month and already have used this a few times. It would be difficult for small children that still must be strapped in car seats. However, my 6 year old loves it back there.

While the MDX is big for a mid-sized SUV, it's still a mid-sized SUV. It's a major challenge to get third-row space in any mid-sized vehicle of this type. The MB M-class does a decent job, though some of it is because the second row can slide forward a bit, compromising some second row room to give the third row more breathing space. And the M-class has even less cargo room behind the third row than the MDX.

If someone expects and really needs capacious seating in the third row, they should either give up on an SUV and look toward a minivan, or go up one step to full-sized SUV's. The tradeoffs with the larger SUV will be the bigger size, and generally poorer agility and fuel economy.

On Edmunds Town Hall, much of the criticism for the MDX's third row comes from folks who are intent on bashing the MDX, often to justify their own vehicles. E.g. there are Highlander owners who criticize the MDX for having a third row that is less than perfect, while the Highlander has none at all.

My view on this is that the MDX's third row may not have limo space, but for many owners it's useful and/or a nice-to-have. What some critics fail to see is that having even a smaller third row is a major plus for many buyers, far better than not having one.

How many of us have been in the back seat of a vehicle with a cramped rear seat? 2+2's don't have much of a second row, but they're there if you need it. I'm sure many have sat in, or have driven friends who have sat in, the tiny rear seats of Integras, older Civics and Sentras, 200SX's, etc. While those rear seats certainly weren't for extended trips, they can be pretty useful, and thus so can the MDX's third row.

My 2 10 year olds like to ride in the 3rd row. Gets them away from their nagging parents.
ALSO.. when the 3rd row seats are up, they create a space behind them that is perfect for a single row of grocery bags.
