New Amendment, maybe? - Click HERE for Original Thread

A shortened clip from the AP, 4 June 2003:

House approves amendment banning burning of American flag.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – In what Democrats called an annual GOP rite of spring, the Republican-controlled House on Tuesday passed an amendment to the Constitution to criminalize flag burning for the fifth time in eight years. The one-line change to the Constitution - "The Congress shall have power to prohibit the physical desecration of the flag of the United States" - was approved by a 300-125 vote as a pair of holidays approach - Flag Day on June 14 and Independence Day in July. Senate passage is less likely. The constitutional amendment needs a two-thirds majority in the House and Senate and approval by three-fourths of state legislatures. Burning an American flag shows disrespect for America, and the majority of the American people approve of legally protecting Old Glory, supporters said. "If we allow its defacement, we allow our country's gradual decline," said Rep. Steve Chabot, R-Ohio.

But many opponents say the legislation would limit free speech rights.

Soap Box Time :soapbox:

Do we really need an amendment to the Constitution to tell AMERICANS that burning the flag is wrong? For those of us who have served, or are serving in the Armed Forces, or have had family members die in defense of this country, I think it goes without saying it is wrong. It just makes me sick to see that crap on the news. I feel, if you don't like something about this country, feel free to SAY it, it's your right. If you hate something about this country enough to burn the flag, get the hell out. I am sure you can pick up a cheep apartment in Iraq, if you would rather live there.

Sorry, just had to get that off my chest.

DEZRVIT,

I agree. If you want to burn the american flag then get the hell out of this country. Freedom inst free and we cant forget those who defend, past and present, this country. If you want to be some hippie who wants to burn a flag, get a life and take a long walk on a short pier.

Good point, Remember, Our armed forces are fighting for our right to bad mouth them and this country, AND burn flags... ironic.

Well having heard both pro and con for a few days now on C-Span I have come to the conclusion that this ammendment would have never seen the light of day if it weren't for the events of 9/11, and the ensuing wars with Afghanistan and Iraq. They burn the flag every day as it it the only legally appropriate (what ever that means) way to dispose of an old flag, I guess we will now start throwing them in the trash when they get old.

Revering a cloth or any other symbols in such manner should be frowned on by any God fearing person. Somebody in the Republican party aint been reading or heeding them Ten Commandments they want posted everywhere. (especially in this case numbers 1,2,3 and 4)

Patriot Act 1 and 2 and now this silly thing. The end of the world is coming and the wool blanket is slowly being pulled over our eyes.

Better not burn that blanket either.

Speaking of getting out of the country. The Attorney General will soon have the power to take your citizenship away from you even if you were born here. They can also have you deported out of the country at any given moment afterwards.

Deported where? It doesn't say, but without citizenship certain laws no longer apply to you. Without citizenship you can't get a passsport and without a passport you can't freely travel internationally so I would assume that the country that recieves you after being deported in such fashion would have you jailed immediately.

The end of the world is coming, get ready for even worse times in the very near future if we keep this stuff up.

One thing about burning the flag, at least you will know the kind of &^%#@ that would do such a thing.

I believe the Bible states the world as we know it WILL end. So whether we 'keep this stuff up" or not appears to be irrelevant, The end will come, and there is nothing anyone can do to delay, or speed it up for that matter... A predestination thing...

True enough MDXX. I was referring to the Govt. decisions that are coming out of the events that have taken place recently.

Exactly, it's one thing to be a fool, it's another to let the world know it.

In a twisted way, that's one of the things that keeps me in business. . .

I really don't think that Republicans or Democrats really care if this becomes an amendment or not. Fact is it will take 2/3 majority of both the House & Senate to ratify, and the GOP does not hold a 2/3 majority in either houses, so what this really is, is our political system at its finest. Plain and simple Congress is jumping on the patriotic bandwagon to boost popularity to ensure re-election amongst their constituents due to the recent events. Yes, we really don't need this amendment to demonstrate patriotism, but then again, as a country we wasted 2 amendments on the banning and reinstatement of alchohol . . . go figure

Flag burning or not, if people really hate this great country, why are they still here?

Where would they go and still have it so good? Funny thing is that many of them want a form of government that historically doesn't tolerate free speech.
