My SBP got a new bumper cover after a minor driveway accident. I went to the best autobody place in Northern MD for the repair work. The basic color matches perfectly, but in direct sunlight, the very sparkly metalic nature of the SBP paint isn't evident on the repainted bumper cover. The cover paint IS metalic, but it doesn't have the various colors of metalic that you can see in direct sunlight elsewhere on the X.
Any other SBP owners have anything repainted yet? I'd like to compare notes. |

I would ask autobody shop if they used Acura factory paint (# on side of drivers door) or if they tried to copy your paint using what they had. |

I'd just like to say hello to a fello Marylander:4: I was pressure washing the MDX like an idiot and took off some paint off the bumper. I believe it was from a rock chip from highway driving. I took it to Atlantic Body shop (whom Frankel Acura recommended) and I was very pleased with the work they did.
Completely unrelated: they stole a couple of my burned CD's though....... |

non-metalic white, the stuff they paint delivery trucks with.
Every other color is subject to fading, primer shift, metalic particle oxidation, and a hundered other symptoms. I have a good friend who has a very successful body shop. He has a poilicy that if his guys cannot get an acceptable match on the damaged bdoy panel they will repaint the adjacent panels without even asking. If you ask him, and the match is STILL obviously noticeable he will repaint the whole vehicle for labor only. Very few people have taken him up in, as he admits that the color STILL won't match factory, but at least it will be uniform.
I would ask two or three randomn friends that don't know it hs been repainted. If they can't tell the differnce just accept it and try not to obsess. If they can notice you might want to consider having the body shoip owner/manager work something out.
Good Luck! |

renov8r: great advice. It looks so good, you can't tell it's been painted, unless you check closely under direct bright sunlight. The SBP really has a multitude of different color metalic particles that gives it a very unusual "sparkly" appearance. The rear bumper cover only has "silver" colored metalic particles, which is fairly standard fare. Again, I like the way you think, and I'll probably just look past it.
Jon: I'll look for you on the beltway! |

I am bringing this old post back to life to see if anyone has done paint work on their SBP.
We've had a couple of sunny days in the last 90 days or so here in MD (a local joke) and I am still a little bothered by the lack of match in the metalic color in my new rear bumper. The base color is "spot on", but it has silver metalic particles, unlike the rest of the X that has the very cool "SBP sparkle".
Based on excellent advice above I am willing to live with it, but I am curious if other SBP'ers had better luck with repainting than I've had. |

There is no such animal as "factory paint" (can NOT be ordered). The color is made by all major auto paint manufacuturers (e.g. Dupont, Sherwin-Williiams, etc.). These paint manufactuers "formulate" the mix of "their toners" that when properly combined result in each color (well, within reason). Thus, an EXACT MATCH is never possible:
** 1st variable: Each manufacturer's "color" will be different (may be so minute that not visible to the eye but it will be different). They can't be identical because each manufacturer's toners are different.
** 2nd variable: The "paint color" is mixed by the body shop or by the place they buy paint using the specified paint manufacter's paint system (e.g. toners) and the appropriate amounts of each toner (based on the formula provided by the paint manufactuer). It is literally impossible to mix the paint exactly (human error, type of scale used, etc.).
** 3rd variable: Application also affects the visible end result. Variables include rate of spray (rate of flow), air pressure used, temperature of ambient air in spray booth, etc.
If the job is 1st rate, at best you will probably notice SOME difference upon really close examination. Could be orange peel diffs, small diff in metallic (actually, usally mica now), etc. Thus, in a first rate job, only someone who really went looking and knew what to look for would note that it was a repaint.
Hope this helps |

Thanks srpbep. I am very happy with the base color match - even the amount of metalic is great. Problem is, Acura's SBP has a multitude of different colored metalic particles that are only apparent in direct sunlight. However, under sunlight conditions you can tell that my bumper is different than the rest of the X at 10 feet away. The difference does not scream, 'cause it's in the metalic.
While I hope that no other SBP owner has a mishap that requires paint repair, if it does occur I'd like to compare notes.
Thanks again. |

| well got my SBP MDX back from the body shop last week. Was involved in an accident some time back. Anyway looks just as new. Most of the front end was replaced including the front bumper. All panels match the factory paint including the multitude of shiny color flakes in the paint. This is true for the front bumper too. |

Hey runmdx, is it possible to get the name/number of your body shop? It would be great to chat with them prior to going back to my shop, as they may indicate something that they did to match the metalic aspects of the SBP.
Thanks for your response so far! |

mdxer46,
Sorry, but IMHO, calling runmdx's body shop is not going to help you, they fix cars, that's their business:
** They do not really want to spend unproductive time talking with you about your car.
** Even if they were willing, if you don't understand auto painting (rare that one would), it will be difficult (if not impossible) to discuss the problem.
** They really don't want to get in the middle of an owner's beef with another body shop (what goes around, comes around).
If you are impressed with the shop that did runmdx's X, then take your X to that body shop and let them repaint it. That the body shop could work with!!
Sorry if you find me blunt, just trying to offer you a perspective on your problem. If you really are unhappy, why not get your insurance company involved. You might find that a professional would simply label the paint work "within tolerances" (please understand, that no one could give a valid evaluation without inspecting the vehicle). |

Don't mind your being blunt! Thanks for your feedback.
The reason I wanted the number was to ask if my shop could contact them, in the event that my shop said something like "can't be done". Just knowing a shop that can get the job done might be the extra leverage to get my shop to be interested in looking into it.
I know it's not 100% guaranteed to work, but hey, couldn't hurt! |

I liked the blue 2003 MDX but one of the reasons I chose SB was that the bumpers on the blue almost looked like they had been repainted because of the color shift in certain lighting.
In other words, don't worry about it... |

| mdxer46 - I did email you the contact number for my body shop some time back. Hope you did talk to them... |

Thanks for doing so runmdx. If you would, please send the number again with the subject "Repainted SBP".
The email account I use for forums is an internet account that I really don't use often. But this time, I'll look for the subject.
Again, thanks for your help.
Also, whynotmdx:
If I can't get anywhere with this pretty quick, I'll drop it. Thanks for your perspective! |
