Hey people, my friend states that the MDX isn't real luxury:

Pug9994 : even though mdx isn't really lux
Pug9994 : it's definately not that luxurious
Pug9994 : i said it DOESNT LOOK LIKE LUX

:11: :11: :blahblah:
Even if Acura is the luxury line of Honda. Being ignorant and dissing what is one of the best SUVs in it's class (Mid-Sized Luxury SUVs under $45,000). I just want to know all of your opinions and reasons why the MDX IS or ISN'T "real" Luxury. Obviously I strongly disagree with him.
It's basically the same class as: FX35/45, ML320/350, RX300/330, X5! I need feedback to show him.

Define luxury
hammermdx
I consider the X luxury, but at the low end of luxury. You get a lot of value for the $$$$.
KingBmdxFLIP22
Luxury: a condition of abundance or great ease and comfort : sumptuous environment <lived in luxury>
-Something inessential but conducive to pleasure and comfort.
-Something expensive or hard to obtain.
-Sumptuous living or surroundings.

*in my words.. Luxury is amenities, ride, quality out of the ordinary.
You get a car not just for ride, and for something to ONLY commute with. You get it because the ride is more than the average. You get it because it's something other than the ordinary car. The beautiful smooth look. (G35coupe to the 350Z) Otherwise, us Acura MDX owners would get a Honda Pilot if we didn't need luxury. (Ford, Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Mercury) ....Luxury=MDX :5: :roadtrip:

For myself, Luxury is a vehicle that makes me smile when I drive it, and always look over my shoulder when I park it for that last peek. Wait a minute.....Maybe my situation is infatuation.

IMO Acura is not a luxury brand and I don't think it really tries to be in spite of what they say in their ads. Honda has found a notch for Acura somewhere between real luxury and the Honda nameplate and engineer Acuras for a specific market, which is offering great engineering and value rather than luxury.

They don't build RWD or V8s because they can't, but because that's not the market they're after. If they were really after the luxury image would they sell the RSX (and the EL in Canada)?

Moved to polls forum.

Not a luxury but pretty damn close! I'd say it's a very nice S.U.V. It's no X5 4.6i, now thats a luxurious vehicle. But people have opinions so please bring 'em:2:

What about the other cars I mentioned: FX35/45, ML320/350, RX300/330, X5 3.0i. If you don't consider the MDX "real" luxury, then does that imply that the SUVs I listed aren't "real" luxury too?
I never expected to see those type of comments; but keep posting your opinions...
KingBmdxFLIP22
Are you guys also talking about non- "real" luxury in the MDX or Acura in general.
Cuz if your talkin about Acura in general, they still have the RL and the NSX.

Why confused? If you are running a poll you should try to remain objective. If you are running it to support a personal opinion, then it has limited value for the group as a whole. :8:

But......if money was no object the MDX would be like 5th or 6th on my list of luxo SUV's I would purchase. Shoot, now all you guys are gonna hate me.:3: Just remember, I am not "2002acuramdxsux" OKAY? My whole beef is the fit/finish/quality of the MDX. I can't stand it when my MDX emits creaks/rattles/jiggles!
Jon
ACURA had to do what they have to do to keep the MDX at a competitive price. Thats why they used the cheesy leather and no HID's etc......etc....etc.... It's a perfectly normal practice to keep costs down. I just wished that I would have known this before I bought it. I was just blinded by the 240hp(2002 model I own) and MOTOR TREND's 2001 S.U.V. of the year award. Gotta stop this impulse buying thing........

Experiences vary, I don't notice such noises in my MDX, and when I do it's usually related to something I left loose, like something I put in it, or a loose seat belt.
I think for an SUV it embodies a fair amount of luxury features and style. Is it like a Lincoln Blackwood, or Escalade? No, but it is in another market. Would I consider the RX more luxurious? In terms of appointments, yes, but the trade-off is the character of the vehicle too.
And the MDX is more agressive in looks as well as action.
It's in a good spot between the RX and Lincoln/Infinity class.

I agree with Jon, leave out value and the MDX would be way down my list, and I'm a dedicated Honda/Acura owner. All vehicles are compromises and Acuras are no exception, something is given up to obtain the value we all cherish.

The RL is a poor excuse for a modern luxury sedan, a replacement is long overdue.

I have no creaks/rattles/jiggles though.
2002 Acura MDX!
Ofcourse it's luxury you STUPID :twak: :headslap:

The poll question has a black/white outcome. Is the MDX luxury, or is it not luxury?

If presented with just those two choices, I choose luxury, like hammermdx said. But on the low-end of luxury.

A better choice, now often used in automotive circles, is "near-luxury." The MDX is somewhere at or above that level, but not quite "luxury."

Acura makes quite a few vehicles that are more "near-luxury" than "luxury." I think the TL and CL fit that description as well, and probably the new TSX.

There's also no black and white demarcation between these classes, as some of this is very subjective. To me, the MDX would be true luxury if Acura boosted the quality of the interior leather and other plastics, and tossed in another few comfort/convenience features.

What the MDX has done very well is combine SPORT and UTILITY with near-luxury, at an attractive price with very good safety and reliability and resale. A vehicle like an X5 combines SPORT and luxury, plus good resale, but without a good price and with weak reliability and poor utility (mainly because of cargo space).

Just ask yourself: what SUV combines good handling, very good power, a comfortable ride, lots of cargo room, stellar crash-test scores, lots of people-carrying ability, is very reliable, has near-luxury, and solid resale at a price of $40k? The new RX330 comes close and of course is more luxurious, but it comes up short in practical cargo room (behind the second row) and people-carrying ability. The German marques can't seem to come up with a reliable, well-priced vehicle if their lives depended on it. The Volvo doesn't have the price and the same level of expected reliability, even if some of it is more luxurious and it has more extended safety features. Again, the MDX has a great combination of positive things.

Honda/Acura is very good at hitting these combinations that hit certain sweet spots in the market. Look at the success of the Odyssey. It provided minivan utility with surprising sport (power), along with good reliability and resale and a good price. It beat up on the previous Sienna because it didn't provide enough of the utility and was more value-priced. (The current Sienna now exceeds the Odyssey in these areas though not on price; it's now up to Honda to respond).

It's LUXURY to my wife and I and thats all that counts to us, who cares what others think. Were very happy with our luxurious MDX.

Acura is entry-level Luxury. Not MB or Lexus, more Volvo and Saab. But it is still my favourite automaker in the world (except perhaps, Audi).:2: :4:

True luxury has much to do with customer service, people willing to pay the extra bucks to be treated right. IMO Acura self invited itself to the luxury market party and arrived wearing a cheap suit. There is no comparison between the interior of a Lexus or an Audi and that of an Acura. If handling was a measure of luxury a Porsche will be a luxury car but instead is considered an exotic vehicle. The handling that matters on the luxury market is how customers are handled, and when buying acura they are treated to a very bumpy and sluggish ride. I thing acura is near luxury or luxury for those who are willing to settle for less.
