When in Maui, check out the sunrise from the summit of Haleakala, drive to Hana to see the Seven Sacred Pools, go to Lahaina for nightlife, and have fun.:29:

EXCALIBUR, that is spectacular! Is this the volcano I'm going to be riding downhill on a bicycle? |

greatscot,
You got it! Here are a few excerpts:
On this Haleakala activity you will bike 38 miles down the world’s largest dormant volcano with only 400 yards of actual pedaling. At the start of biking activity, you’ll view the stunning sunrise and colorful moonscapes from the edge of Haleakala volcano’s huge crater at 10,023 feet. Then, as you coast down the Haleakala mountain to sea level at the edge of the clear, warm waters of the Pacific Ocean, you’ll experience wonderful panoramic views of Haleakala, Maui, Hawaii far below you. You will stop often for rest breaks and picturesque Maui moments.

Incredible! Will they let me take either of my Campagnolo equipped Raleigh or my Cannondale? I think a downhill tuck on that would be unreal.

And, off topic:
EXCALIBUR,
I took the Sunrise Tour back in 1988. One of the great experiences of my life. The outfit was "Cruiser Bob's" at the time. Is that what is now known as "Maui Downhill?"
The guy leading us (he rode his bike backwards most of the way down the mountain while talking to us) was the IronMan champion at the time and, I think, a mayor of the town we ate breakfast in. A remarkable experience and not to be missed for anyone 8 to 80!
greatscot
As EX mentioned, all gear is provided. When I did this in 1988 they were using one speed bikes (no gears needed since it's 38 miles downhill with only about 1/8 mile of pedaling) that had been outfitted with brakes normally used on motorcycles. (Obviously brakes are very important under those conditions!). With all the new equipment out there in the intervening 15 years since I went I'm not sure what's changed in that regard.
It was a great experience. You will love it. If I get back there again (I've been to Hawaii 5 times) it's at the top of my list -even though I'm now on the "sunset" side of 60! |

Cruiser Bob was the originator of the Haleakala downhill bike riding adventure.
