Just wondering what everybodies milage is like? In my CR-V now I am getting about 18 mpg in the city and about 22 mpg on the highway. EPA specs for the Honda CR-V are 22/25 city/highway. How close are the EPA numbers for the MDX?
Thanks
Evan
P.S How accurate is the onboard computer at calculating your mpg? |

| I have had my MDX since 12/13/00 and the first 1000 miles the average mpg was 16 city and 19 highway. After that my mileage increased to 17 city and 22 highway. The trip computer in the base model (non navi) is accurate for me within .3 mpg. |

I have 1400 miles since 2/1. Winter mileage for rural commuting has been 18 in snow and 20 on dry roads. The only highway I have done was when I picked up the vehicle and averaged 23 until I got to Maine with hilly terrain. The hills really drain the mileage.
I drive pretty easy and watch the trip computer a lot. It looks like the EPA rating is on target. Stop and go driving drops to about 10-15 mpg. Once broken in, highway mileage I would think would exceed the highway estimate. Most of my driving has been done in 0 - 35 degree temperatures. Not optimum temp for good fuel economy. |

2500 miles later and I am dissappointed! While there have been several times that I have reached the 20 to 23 miles per hour range, the average for the tankful has always havored around the 17.8 to 18.5 mile area. That with 70% highway driving! I've noticed that city driving, regardless of how soft or gentle I handle the car, results in the 11 to 14 mile range. When I studied the market and the competition, I figured Acura offered me the best option with its 17 to 23 EPA range and that I would average 20 mpg. I think ACURA is misleading the public. The Rating should be 12 to 20. I doubt it very seriously if anyone is seeing the 17 city estimate.
I took a 4 hour trip on the highway this weekend and averaged 19.3 miles per hour. |

| We only have ~900 miles so far. But have not gotten anywhere close to low 20s. Our longest trip to date was to a baseball tournament in Brenham TX this past weekend, from Katy, TX. Although not that far away, it was mostly highway miles. We averaged about 18.5 on the trip. With so little mileage and trip experience so far, I am not too concerned. I too had hoped that based on advertised EPA numbers that low 20s (21 or 22) would be a real possibility for extended highway trips. |

I'm still on my first tankful, having just recently picked it up after a 20 week wait. After reading alot of posts about this subject I was prepared to see worse than expected mileage right off the bat. I have about 150 city miles on it right now and am getting 17.4 MPG according to the trip computer. So my first impression is good. I plan to follow this closely for awhile and will probably keep a manual record/calculation as well, to see how close the trip computer is to reality. Once I get some decent miles under "our" belt, I'll post my results again.
BTW - my old SUV was a 1988 Pathfinder. No matter how careful I drove it, Winter MPG was about 13 - 15 tops. Summer MPG was about 17 - 19. Don't know why the difference between seasons cause I never let it just sit and warm up in idle in the winter, and my driving patterns never varied much between seasons. Smaller SUV, smaller engine, lower mileage....hope the reverse is true!

| I had a CRV which averaged 20 MPG with 70/30 hwy/city driving. With my MDX, the average has been around 19 MPG. I have to admit, I'm driving a little faster in the MDX because the smooth power during acceleration is there where in the CRV, there was no comparison. I have around 3500 miles on the MDX so hopefully, the mileage will get a little better as the engine breaks-in a little more. |

We are around 2700 miles so far.
On a ski trip to Lake Tahoe a month ago, we averaged about 21 MPG
Typically in day to day driving in the Bay Area traffic we consistently get 17 MPG average (stop and go traffic, stop lights, etc.). Haven't gotten above 17.5 MPG, though in city driving.
So, overall, not too bad. It's better than our old Explorer which was about 14-15 MPG.

What speed do you drive on the highway? This could really effect the mileage, because, contrary to popular belief highway mileage is not NECESSARILY that much better than city driving if you're driving very fast, and this is ESPECIALLY true of SUVs because they are not as aerodynamically efficient as cars, in general. The most economical driving speed for a vehicle is around 50mph, where aerodynamics do not pose a big problem (55-60mph for the MDX because it has an extra overdrive - 5th speed - and also because it's more aerodynamic than other SUVs). As you start to exceed this "ideal speed range" fuel economy decreases substantially - Above speeds of around 80mph the wind resistance starts to increase tremendously (especially for SUVs) and fuel economy degrades EXPONENTIALLY !!. Fill up the tank and find a relatively flat stretch of highway and drive around 75 to hundred miles at a constant 55mph and measure the mileage. If you don't get around 25mpg (or at least the 23mpg advertised) there is something wrong with your vehicle and you should have it inspected at your Acura dealership. |

Guys,
There was very scholarly thread shown below that gets into aerodynamic esoterica and the like about gas mileage. You will find many pearls of wisdom include air drag varies as the square not exponent of velocity which I know you are all dying to learn.

As far as posting actual mileage data, ghost strarted another very scholarly thread referred in wmquan's post above. |

Just to put in my two cents....I get a consistent 16 mpg average combined driving.

OK, everybody listen up. Here are the actual "slide-rule" calculations on my 2001 MB Base/Navi with 40 psi in the Goodyear Integrity tires(good smooth ride, by the way). ALL miles are driven in the town of Carson City, NV with a couple of trips to Reno thrown in(30 miles one way). So hear me this is "city mileage".
First tank (Sacramento, CA to Carson City,NV) 18.43 MPG
2nd............................................15.72 MPG
3rd............................................18.57 MPG
4th............................................17.03 MPG
5th............................................17.96 MPG
6th............................................16.20 MPG
7th............................................18.92 MPG
8th............................................18.50 MPG
9th............................................19.67 MPG
10th...........................................22.64 MPG
11th...........................................18.60 MPG
12th...........................................19.24 MPG
The first tank was bringing the MDX home when we bought it at Niello Acura,(odometer=17 miles) which incidentally was in a heck of a blizzard snow storm which slowed the normal 3 hour drive into a 5.5 hour trip. Lots of stop and go.
The other tanks are nearly all city driving. Fuel is 93 octane premium (mostly Shell). ALL CALCULATIONS ARE FROM A POCKET CALCULATOR---NOT FROM IN-DASH COMPUTER...

Good numbers Don! Just for grins, could you pair up your trip meter readings with your calculated values? It would be interesting to figure out the direction and amount of bias. Also, if it is consistently biased, you could figure out a correction, for the meter. Also, you have quite a range of values, does your average speed vary the same way?
Inquiring minds want to know... :)

I get about the same, 16.7 on an average combined driving, right before the tank is empty. I have about 7500 miles on the car and there wasn't any significant increase in gas mileage as I put in more mileage. |

My best tank ever was 23.1 MPG by the trip computer with 650mi on the odo travelling between Kettleman City and the Bay Area on I5 with the cruise set at 75-80.
Now with 1600mi logged I average the same as most others at around 17MPG with a 60/40 mix of city/hwy.
For those noticing worse mileage in the winter I think it may be related the some states use of anti-pollution "oxygenated" fuel (from Oct-Feb I think in CA?) which has less energy that a regular gallon of gas. Can anyone elaborate on this as a potential for worse winter mileage (barring bad weather driving)? |

ghost, I punched in the "History" on the built-in computer and got a partial read-out of only two fillups #9 and #12. With no experience with the machine, I inadvertenly switched from auto to manual reset, then forgot to reset manually. OH WELL, too soon we get too old. Anyway, here's what I got so far:
Tank fill #9 Computer 19.5 MPG----Calculator 19.67 MPG
Tank fill #12 Computer 19.5 MPG----Calculator 19.24 MPG
So we have a pretty good correlation, but not perfect.
Yes, my speed does vary a lot depends on traffic, number of stops, etc.
So far I'm very satisfied with what I see.

| After 1500 miles 50/50 driving, trip computer is showing from 18.6 to 21.2. I'm only buying 87 or 89 gas. We've got some of the worst gas prices around. Regular now $1.83/gal. |

| Well...if I'm reading this right, my trip average says 14.1 and when I look at my history it says 16.3 and this was probably freeway miles. I'm only on my second tank of PREMIUM GA$ with 100 miles to go on the current tank. I must drive like I type. Does this get better? I'm not even really zipping around and have been taking it easy. It's a little hilly around here...could this be the problem? ($1.89pg) |

My 4 days old MDX gave me the following average MPG on two high way driving at 80 MPH:
1st Tank of Fuel : 19.1 MPG Avg.
2nd Tank of Fuel : 20.2 MPG Avg.
Based on what I've observed and the way I drive the vehicle, I probably will get a 16-17 and 19-22 average on a city and highway driving cycles respectively.

DMor,
We all know that you are really ARE the "Littly Old Lady from Pasadena" and that's why your mileage is so poor!!:D:D Check my mileage results under the thread in the Gallery that ghost posted. Maybe you got the thirstier one of our MDX fraternal twins. |

I think it's unfair of Acura to claim 17 mpg for city driving. I consistently get 15 mpg for city or lower! I absolutely get the 22.something for freeway travel. But on the lower end, Acura should restate their range.
|
|
|

Before I changed my wheels, I would consistently get 17 to 18 mpg city driving and often 25.6 mpg highway... so I think the average is probably right in where Acura claims it to be. Since I've changed my wheels to a wider tire, I'm getting about 2 to 3 mpg less.

I'm just finishing up the original dealer tank of petrol - and I'm averaging 19.2mpg. About 60-70% of that has been SOCAL freeway miles.
The best part about all of this is that my ever-so-competitive hubby is actually driving more er.... shall we say "reasonably" ;) in order to "BEAT THE MILEAGE METER AVERAGE" Mind you - I'm not complaining. This works out great for me.
