My wife tried to open the gas filler door. It doesn't work. I have the gas gage light on showing I have about 25 miles left.
Anybody have any suggestions on fixing this?

Did you check the owners' manual to see whether there's a manual override (like behind a panel in the cargo compartment, directly behind the gas fill)? I haven't checked this out myself, but in other cars I've owned that have had remote gas lid releases, there has always been something like this (in case the cable breaks).
Good luck...! |

| Gee, I had this happen to me on another car, not the X, and it was the cable from the opening lever to the door that broke. Fortunatley, the car I had at the time had an emergency cable inside the trunk to pull in that situation, I don't think the X has that. Sorry I can't be of any help to you but good luck. |

| Yeah, I forgot to mention that the manual/tech support says that there is no override for this problem. |

| Why not drive to the dealer to have it service? |

| Assuming you're under warranty I'd call Roadside Assistance and make it their problem! They may be more interested in solving the problem if they had to send someone out to you. |

If the light just went on you have ~3 gals left. Since you're in the Bay Area there's gotta be a dealer within your cruising range. If not, then only drive downhill.
You can't get the door open from the outside (I was thinking credit card) due to the latch design; it has to be opened from the inside (requires rear trim panel removal).
Good luck. |

BTW, the one thing you could try on your own is checking around the release lever. You don't indicate whether the cable is binding or whether it's disconnected (the lever would be flopping around too loose).
Anyway, to check the lever and cable attachment @ that end, pull the cap on the lever off (toward the front of the car), remove the sill plate/trim around the lever, pull back the carpet, and take a look (you might have to remove the lever assembly). If you see the cable flopping around they grab it and pull! Unfortunately, there's an equally likely chance that the problem is @ the filler door end.
The cable runs under the front and rear sill plates, then behind the rear quarter panel.
IMO removing that rear trim panel behind the gascap is a PITA and I wouldn't bother with it myself. |

I experienced a similar problem back when the X was newer. The gas door liked to stick shut sometimes even though the cable mechanism was retracting the black "peg". (The door could be easily pried open with a credit card or similar - it was just a "little bit" stuck). I tried lubricating the mechanism - that didn't really help much.
The final fix, and it stayed fixed, was to bend the latch tab on the back of the gas door very slightly AWAY from the latch "peg" mechanism that engages it on the body. The tab can be easily bent by hand, and it's designed so it won't bend the face of the door itself when you do it. That bending increases the clearance between the parts so they don't rub on each other and stick.
The tab apparently rubs against the part that the "peg" comes out of if there isn't enough clearance. If this seems to be the problem with yours, this could be your solution. (Once you get it open again). |

| BTW, to "pry" the door open, the cable will need to be pulled from next to the seat. Takes two people, or a chunk of something holding up the release lever, unless you have REALLY long arms. (This assumes your cable mechanism is working, and chances are good that it is). |

Guess what? I made it to the dealer in Santa Rosa. .:D I can't remember the last time I drove 50-55 on Highway 101. When I started out on the freeway it said 13 miles, and it was 19 miles to the dealer. When I got to the dealer, the miles left in the tank was 18.
Thanks to all for their help. We tried all of the suggestions.
One thing I noticed about the Acura Help Care 800#. All they were going to do was tow the car to the dealer. Not exactly what I wanted to hear. :( |

Did they fix it, what was the cause of the problem? |

Not fixed yet, the cable broke, and they did not have one in stock. They jimmy-rigged a cable tie that allows me to open the flap.
I also had them replace the 2nd row middle seat belt that would not retract. I would not wish that on anyone. They had to remove the headliner to do fix it.
Unfortunantly, they tracked grease into the carpeted area:3: .
I will get it detailed when I bring it back in to replace the cable.
BTW, I still LOVE the MDX!:D
We drove 200+ miles on Saturday, attending various family graduation parties in the SF Bay Area. I averaged 23.2 MPG.
Nice... |
