MDX owners :
Only test-drive it once, wish to find out if MDX(base model) possesses following features :

(1) Airbag shut-off switch - I have had a bad experience with my previous-owned Civic (2002 model) which has an airbag indicator fault. If for some reason the indicator lights up, I can switch it off immediately and drive to dealer tomorrow without worrying too much driving back to home.

(2) (specific)Door-open indicator - In Honda Pilot, the dash-board panel has a indicator that tells you which particular door is open so you don't have to open & close each and every door when the indicator lights come on.

(3) Can both the driver & passenger side seat recline backwards at a wide angle - 145deg ? If we decide to pull-over and take a nap before resume long trip again.

(4) car rental service - can I bring the MDX to any other Acura dealership for servicing and they would still provide the free car rental service if they couldn't finish within 2 hours ?

Thanks.

1. The passenger seat has a pressure sensor that will shut off the airbag if no one on the passenger seat so an intermittent "srs" light is not uncommon and a waste of yours and your dealers time. I don't know the specifics of the Civic.

2. Yes there is a little picture on the instrument cluster that will indicate which door is open.....quite handy.

3. The seats due recline back to a reasonable degree but IMHO it is personal taste. Some people can sleep on airplanes, some can't.

4. I can't answer this cause I have never researched or needed this but would be curious myself to find out. We do have Acura Roadside Service but not sure the extent it covers you.

Good luck

It is my understanding that any Acura dealer should provide you with a loaner/rental car, as long as you have an extended service (something more than an oil change), and as long as you call in advance and make an appointment for the loaner car.

We purchased our MDX from a different dealer than where we have it serviced, and there has never been any issue regarding a loaner car. Probably the only thing I missed was a free VTM4 fluid service which was offered for X's purchased at this same dealer. Otherwise, their Acura service department has treated me as if I'm a past and future car customer at that dealer.

It has also been my experience that I need to call about 1 week in advance to guarantee a loaner car. Otherwise, they provide me with free shuttle service.

Question 4 - Most likely it will recline quite far. You can also put the seats in the back down and sleep that way. Great car and you'll love it.

Thanks for all the reply.
These knowledge are really helpful for newbies like me...
I still have 2 more questions :
(1) Is it possible to install an aftermarket rear-camera in MDX ? how about the viewing screen ? Must I get the NAVI package then ?

(2) stupid question but .... why does mini Van like Toyota Sienna although they are bigger but they are still lighter than MDX (4175lbs vs 4420lbs) ?

(3) The tire rim of MDX is 17" while many other SUVs are still 16". Does bigger rim possess better off-road capability (or just look nicer) ? Does it cruise better on bumpy pavement road ?

Thanks !:)

My wife drives our X all the time. We have rearview camera and you will be glad if you get one. No more worry about a car behind you. It makes parallel parking so easy and safe. I know it's extra two grand but I think it's worth every penny once you get used to Navi and camera. Sorry I don't know anything about after-market ones but I wouldn't want to mess around with wirings anyway. Hope this helps.

Hi Adc:

___I can’t tell you the entire reason for the weight differential between the 04 Sienna and the MDX but if you look at the AWD version of the Sienna @ 4365 #’s, it is only 100 #’s away from the Touring trimmed X. The X’s 4WD and undercarriage is probably a bit more substantial in terms of ruggedness which possibly leads to an even higher weight penalty. I am simply guessing however …

___TheyCallMeBruce installed an aftermarket rear view camera in his 01 Premium if I remember correctly? It can be and has been done.

___Good Luck

Hi Waynes,
Thanks for your reply.
Maybe this has been answered before, so MDX is 4 wheel drive and some other SUV/minivan like Sienna is AWD, which is better ? in terms of stability, wet road condition, corners...

By the way, when I test-drive the X's salesman told me that X is AWD !

Thanks.

adc,

There are no industry-wide definitions of 4-wheel drive and all-wheel drive. However, many consider 4WD a system that includes a low-range.

And the MDX is AWD, like the Sienna. How it accomplishes AWD is somewhat different than the Sienna. The MDX's AWD is fairly advanced. I've heard a number of things about the Sienna but I'd like to read more confirmation before making a conclusion. Early impressions are positive, however, and possibly better than the MDX's in certain ways.

One key item to keep in mind is that the Sienna's AWD system requires that the vehicle use run-flat tires, because there is no room for a spare tire (the MDX has a compact spare -- full diameter, but not the same width, and does not use run-flats). In general, run-flats tend to ride rougher and don't have the same dynamicism of many conventional tires. Some folks who have more severe winters have expresed concerns that they can't replace the run-flats with conventional winter tires, because they wouldn't have a spare tire.
