I remember reading that a vehicle with its lights on has 3 to 4 times greater visibility then one without. Since my X does not have DRL's, I searched this web site to see if there was a switch or something that could be plugged in that would turn the fog lights or head lights on while the ignition is on. There are some posts to show you how to do this through the wiring but I wanted a simple solution.
I first thought that limo tint on the light sensor on the dash would be a good option. However, they don't sell 1 inch squares of the stuff. The other option was some type of tape but I didn't want it to look funky. The best option seemed to be electrical tape. It's black, smooth and not overly shiny. I was a little worried about the heat since I live in Texas. I have used electrical tape to wire stereo equipment in the past but the summer heat tends to make it gooey and loose it adhesive properties. Since it is going on the dash, there will definitely be allot of heat to deal with. Then one day when I was at Home Depot, I noticed that they have about 15 different kinds of electrical tape. They range from about $.45 to $4. I picked the black mid-grade which has a temperature range from -10C to +90C. I cut a small piece to fit over the sensor and you don't even notice it is there. There are higher grades of electrical tape which have a wider temperature range and come in about eight colors so you could probably match your interior if you wanted to.
Anyway, it works great and the lights are on at all times when I am driving. Even in full sun. |

thanks for the tip, but unfortunately, that won't work for me. i have the nav and i would still want the light sensor to adjust the nav screen's brightness for me automatically.
the solution that i'm looking for would be to be able to have the fog lights turn on when the car is on without having any other effects on the car. my ideal situation would be to have the fog light switch function regardless of whether the headlights are on or off but also to be able to turn off when the car is off.
that way, i can leave the fog light switch on all the time and use them as DRLs, more or less.
any simple solutions? |

| I think some simple rewiring of the light schematic will work for you. I'm no expert, but it can be done. |

nhatman,
Since I don't have the NAV, there was no problems with light sensor adjustment for me. I think I understand why there are so many posts on the wiring issue.
Good Luck! |

Do a search for DRL as the subject and theycallmebruce as the author. He's posted step-by-step instructions to do just that. |

There is an earlier thread about this here. |
