| Cadillac did the same thing with a V8 many years ago. |

And MB has it now in their high-end lines (V12’s I think). If that article was about cutting off cylinders while cruising in their new V8 (yea right) I could get excited!!

| This is very cool... as I have said earlier, Honda may not be first to the market with things but when they get there, they sure are the best!!! |

Yes I believe they did and it was a bomb. Hopefully Honda's will be a huge improvement. |

| This post really should be moved ... not a "classified" (hmmmm, unless this post was started by American Honda!!), |

| Interesting but not a novel idea at all. Already done before. One Concern that I have is how will the powertrain handle the extra power when the non-engaged cylinders come online. That must give a nice kick to the drive train. |

I was about to say the same thing. It flopped like a flap jack, it hardly worked correctly. Like Hammer said hopefully Hondas version is much better.
BTW I moved the thread.... :2: |

Not really, it did work for what it was designed to do and at the time.
The major problem was vibration which the regular dampers could not handle, in this case when three of the cylinders are not firing. Honda's answer is a new active damper which remains to be seen how well it will perform.
Sure that by sealing cylinders the vehicle will operate under open throttle conditions which will increase pumping efficiency. But one thing that is not mentioned are the incresed loses from lugging those three cylinders around ie: friction as well as loses from compressing a constant air volume without a bypass (that is if the cylinder is sealed).
Its always a trade-off, lower fuel consumption, yes, probably to meet future standards. In my opintion, I would not consider this
as a 3.0L V6 more of a 4 cylinder 1.8L type motor. |

Thanks for that thread interesting read. The key words in that article are "When loads are light".
People will have to adjust their driving style to realize the claimed 8% savings in fuel efficiency. Othervise, it might be closer to 2-3%. Do not monitor your tire pressure and that diminishes down to 0%. |

I also heard that the combo of alum block and cast head was a bad combo, allowing antifreeze get close to oil and basically ruining the enigne. Also porous blocks came into light. |

This engine is probably to come out on the TL, which will come out this year as a 2004 model. DOD was used on past Cadilacs, but was trashed because of many problems with it. I think VCMS will be more reliable thanks to a different operating system.
I also hope that the new TL will bring HiDS and CMS. They are so cool!
There was a thread about the Inspire on which this engine is used.
