Good Morning. We had a $2000 DVD/TV system installed in our MDX before we took posession of our car from the dealer (i.e., Acura sent the car to a 'car stereo'-type business). The 'business end' of the system is floor-mounted below driver's seat, while the viewing screen & controls are roof-mounted behind the front seats.
We've had 2 consistent problems w/the system:
1. DVDs are easily thrown off track by very small bumps in the road. When this happens you have to manually fast-forward the DVD from the beginning to the point where it stopped (assumning you'd like to continue watching the movie from the point where it stopped). I would understand & tolerate such inconvenience if I hit a pothole or a curb, etc., but what we're experiencing seems rediculous.
2. When we're playing a DVD, the surround-sound is heck of a lot weaker than when we're playing the radio.
Would appreciate hearing from anyone experiencing similar problems, particularly if you've remedied them, or anyone that can point me to a more pertinent thread.
Regards,
Glen |

| What year is your X? Also, I would just take it back to the dealer and have them make it right since you paid them two grand. If you have an 03, what was the reason you decided against the factory installed RES? |

Your unit shouldn't skip unless you drive off a cliff.
The low volume is PROBABLY because they're using an FM modulator. Do you have to tune to a specific station to hear DVD/movie sound? If so, then tell them to replace the FM mod with a BLITZSAFE adapter (you can use the SEARCH feature for more info) and you won't have the loss.
I'd take it back to the dealer/shop that sold/installed it. |

Mine is an 02. I don't believe bringing the problems I described to the dealer will get them resolved. The reason being 'been there, done that' & it didn't work. Shortly after we took position of the car, there were problems w/the way the roof mount was done (i.e., the material/scheme that the 'car stereo' place used to blend the unit into the finsihed roof interior was coming apart), we took the problem to the dealer & they said, "We didn't do the install, so you need to resolve your problem w/the company that did." Which we did, & the results were satisfactory.
Thus, we're about to contact this company w/the new problems &, hopefully, they'll get resolved satisfactorily too. The reason I posted the thread was to see whether or not anyone knew (from experience) if these problems are truly fixable. If I were to get a lot of 'no votes' then perhaps we'd consider going to something other than the floor- & roof-mounted system.
Thanks for the speedy response & good input/questions!!

| I wouldn't let the dealer off the hook since you paid them directly. Will there be any warranty issues down the road if you sidestep the dealer? |

Who took your money for the video system? If the dealer, then the dealer is on the hook -- though, yea, they're just going to send you to the subcontractor to have it fixed -- but it's the dealer's responsibility. If this is the case, then it sounds like your dealer ain't the greatest for blowing you off with the "we didn't do the install" since THEY chose the installer and THEY took your money.
Insofar as roofmount systems, lots of people have similar aftermarket setups and they work fine.
I imagine your DVD player is defective (hence the skipping) and they've used a crappy FM modulator for sound. If they've used a wireless FM Mod then the problem is even worse than a wired one. Like I said, a Blitzsafe adapter is a better alternative that will yield volume consistent with your other audio inputs.
Good luck. |

I agree with all thats been said. The dealer may "refer" their outsourced audio upgrades out to the stereo shop, but if it is a reputable shop, they will stand behind their products and install.
I would get "persmission" from your Acura dealer to deal directly with the stereo shop, as it will be much more convenient for you, and you can outline the problems to them directly.
On the topic of sound, I agree with The Worm that a direct connection is far superior than FM modulation. The only FM modulation that I have found to be effective is where the modulator is actually used in line with the antenna lead. (where the anntena plugs in to the modualtor, then the modulator is plugged in to the radio unit. The ones that simply use a tuning frequency to "pick up the signal" through the air are not effective, and volume is kept low to avoid potential distortion.
As far as DVD skipping, is the unit a "made for auto" DVD player? Some companies will advertise DVD players that are great for home or auto, and provide an adaptor to work with both types of power sources, however, they may not have the dampening mechanisms built in to absorb the fine road vibrations. Bottom line is this should not happen if a a true auto DVD player.
BTW-does the unit skip if a CD is played in your DVD player?
The floor mount should not present any problems. I have a floor mounted DVD changer and no problems at all, even over the roughest roads...so have them check the model, and if ok, then something no right with the unit itself...good luck with things..the whole idea is to enjoy the ride with less stress for everyone... |
