Oh No, Noise?? - Click HERE for Original Thread

Well, I have come across a very unusual problem and need some thoughts before I tackle it tonight.

I recently switched head units and installed an Alpine IVA-C800. At first I used push buttons to bypass the safety feature until I could order the automatic bypass switch, (the Pac TR-7). I got it installed and had no problems whatsoever. So last week I installed a JL 250/1 to go along with my JL 300/4 and the TR-7 quit working. Yesterday, I finally go around to reprogramming the TR-7 and now it works fine. Now my problem. When I fired everything back up, I had horrible noise out of the right speaker. No noise at all from the left, just the right. I first did a simple swap of the RCA cables and the noise stayed in the right speaker. I ran out of time last night so, today is going to be try to figure out the problem before I get home tonight so I can go right to it. My first thoughts were that something in the TR-7 did not get hooked up solid. I used bullet connectors and maybe one of them did not seat properly. I just have never had a situation where only one speaker had noise and even switching the RCA's from left to right, had no effect.

Any thoughts or ideas? Thanks
R Stevens
slackass,
I recall there was a noise coming out of one of the tweeters on my new install. The culprit was a bad ground connection on the tweeter. Suggest you check all wire connections to that speaker on bothe the amp output and speaker sides. Good luck.

slackass,

PS: There is a great forum at www.carsound.com for car audio/video addicts. Somebody over there can probably help.

Thanks for the suggestions Rstevens. I am pretty sure the grounds are good. It seems the problem started when I added the TR-7 and the JL 250/1. As soon as I get the time, I will start the whole isolating process. I hate noise. Sometimes, it is almost impossible to track down.

Well, I think I fixed the noise and I was shocked at what it was. Seems one channel of my JL 300/4 is bad.

JL amps are cool in that you can set the gains pretty easily. You play a test tone a 3/4 volume and measure the voltage on the speaker outputs. Adjust sensitivity till it reads the proper voltage and done. After trying everything from new grounding points to running power straight to the battery, I was convinced I was just going to have to live with it and turn the gains down. I rechecked the voltages and the right front output was off. It should measure 12.3 volts @ 2ohms so, I set the left channel at 12.3 and the right measured 4.2 volts. I guess when I set them the first time, I set off the right channel, making the left way to high. I tried the rear channels and they were dead on 12.3 each side. So, for now, I am using the rear channels of the amp to power my front speakers. The noise is completely gone. When I want to add rear speakers to the amp, I will have to send it to JL to get it looked at.

I guess it is the old saying, "Its always the last place you look".

I am now a happy camper once again.
