4-Wheel Drive Question - Click HERE for Original Thread

The literature indicates that the MDX goes into 2-Wheel
drive mode after 18 mph or so.

Will the 4-Wheel Drive System engage after 18 mph if it detects wheel slippage?

I wonder what would happen if you are cruising on the Highway and hit a significant puddle.

How can you tell if 4-Wheel Drive system is engaged?

Thanks,

The MDX powers all four wheels under certain conditions:

1) When slippage is detected (e.g. you're driving at 30mph and you hit a slippery spot). Most AWD systems do this.

2) When you are accelerating (an enhancement on most AWD systems).

3) When you are in first/second gear, under 18mph, and engage the VTM-4 lock button. It progressively disengages at speeds approaching 18mph.

For scenarios 1 and 2, there is no visible indication.

Thus, the MDX is not always powering all four wheels. On the negative side, it has to wait until slippage occurs before correction (a relatively short amount of time). On the positive side, Acura claims that the system is lighter weight and improves fuel economy.
There is a nice explanation about the function of the MDX 4WD in the following review found at the Edmunds site:
