OK, fresh off the press pics of my X front and rear speaker upgrade. I found these two pair of speakers in my spare parts bin from my previous system setup. Both pairs just happen to be 6-1/2" coaxial, perfect for the X. :2:

Here is the Boston Acoustics RM6...

Here is the front Bose factory and the Boston RM6. Look at the differences in depth...

Due to the thickness of the new RM6 magnet, I had to cut the baffle behind the speaker...

Here is the before pic...

Here is the after cut pic... I didn't have a saw so I used one of our steak knife :D ... Wife said "you're crazzzzy" :D

Here is the finish product for the left side speaker. I reused the 3 screws and drilled 3 new holes...

The first one took me ~20 minutes, the other side took me only ~10min...

I used the JBL GTO602 for the rear door.

The rear was a lot more difficult due to the rain guard. I basically left the rain guard alone. I mounted the speaker using 3 new screws to screwed it to the rain guard itself.

Here is the finished product...

The total installed took 1-1/2 hours. The music is so clean and clear now with the new speakers. :2:

This temporary fix will do for now until I can save enough money for the Diamond Audio's.

Happy Independence Day everyone!!! Have a save Holiday...

Do your windows clear the new speakers in front? I've read of depth problems on the window regulators.

Bargain Bostons are a hard find let alone have them laying around. Amazent found a couple of pair on ebay some time ago, and I bought a pair off him. They are an improvement over the Infinity, and worth the extra hassle to put in. I had no problem with the window mechanism, and in fact remember testing for that prior to installation.

Then I guess any discussions of speaker depth is not really an issue as long as you are willing to do "surgery" to your door panels?

Does this same apply to the rear doors? Did you check?

I don't know the efficiency of the Boston's but you must be running near the limits of the Bose amp at moderate volumes. It just takes more current to make those bigger drivers move. I've added an Alpine amp and am running toward the top end of the range for the Infinity 6002i's, and I'm going to look into what options I have to move up into. My problem is that I won't do the surgery to the door panels (everything I've done so far I can have back to "stock" condition if necessary) so I'm limited to mid range speakers at best.

I did not see any value in upgrading the rears above the Infinity.

csimo,
no problem at all clearing the window. I can still return the stock speakers back to it's original location with no problem at all. I think your're right about the bose's amp running at or near it's limit with these bostons. I'm planning to add two JL Audio amps in later. One to drive the 6 front speakers and the other one drive the a new 10" sub.

DaleB,
This was my first speakers upgrade, so going from the factory bose to JBL for the rear was a big improvement. Like I've mentioned earlier, all these speakers were used in my previous cars. I also found a pair of OZ 4" midbass :D .

I understand that. I replaced all mine with Infinitys originally. And the jump to the Bostons (FX-6) in the front was quite an eye-opener.
