What accessories should I get? - Click HERE for Original Thread

This is probably basic stuff to you guys, but I am new to MDX and am certainly new to the SUV/SAV market. The reason why we want to get something like the MDX is for space for when we do family outings and vacations. So I was wondering what kind of accessories I should get.

We are a family of four and I am wondering if we need to get the running boards or side steps. We also have in-laws and grandparents who will get in the vehicle from time-to-time, so I am thinking that this feature might be worthwhile. Any preferences?

We will also be making several long distance road trips per year, so I am thinking that the short box for the roof rack might be good for extra storage. Any comments based on experience whether needed or not. Remember, family of four. :)

There are some minor things I am looking at as well:

Nose mask for those long road trips. Are the easy to clean after the entire trip is over?

How about the all season floor mats and cargo tray, do they really protect the interior against "kid" damage?

Lastly, how does that cargo net work, good or bad?

Any other suggestions of things I might be missing? I have already decided that we better get the DVD for those long trips. Those travelling with kids, can you tell me if this is really the life-saver some suggest that it is?

Thanks again for all your help. :)

twosomeca,

It sounds like you have a pretty good "wish list" already started. Think about your function and personal styling preferences when choosing accessories. You might also want to think about a tailgate deflector and body side moldings also. Be sure to check out Hondacuraworld. Good luck.:29:

For kids the running boards, for show the sidesteps

I definitely recommend the side steps over the running boards, they look so much better and flashier. I'm not sure if thats what you want, but the kids and older adults can still use it to get in and out of your X.
I have not purchased a cargo box for the roof yet, but I will be buying one shortly for my trip to Florida in August. So thats a must also.
The cargo net works fine, i like it.

The DVD/TV is a must as well. It will come in so handy during those long road trips.

As for tailgait deflectors they look good, i'm not sure about the nose mask thou.

Good luck on your decisions, and don't forget to check out www.hondacuraworld.com

While boards "may" be a better option for very young kids, side steps are fully functional for virtualy all age groups and are not just for show.

Thanks for all the good info so far. I'll put on my list of things to check out a comparo between running boards and side steps. Hopefully, my dealer has both.

As for the nose mask, I am not a big fan of them, so let me ask this question, how dirty and chipped up does the nose get on long road trips? I know it varies, but lets just say that my long-distance driving will mostly be interstate highway and mountain two-laners, so there will be bugs and there could be gravel (salt not allowed out here for winter driving). I would never keep the mask on full time. Rather, I would just put it on for the trip and not take it off until I returned home. Thanks, again. :)

An alternative to the nose mask that you may want to consider is the 3M Scotchcal product or "clear bra" as some say. It's a tough yet transparent film that goes over and protects the front portions of your vehicle including front bumper, front portion of the hood, the front fenders, the lenses of your headlights, fog lights as well as the side view mirrors. If installed properly, you won't even really notice that the film is there. We have it installed on both of our vehicles and it works great. You'd still need to "clean" the bugs off the film, but I think it might be a little easier. Also, your paint and the lenses of your lamps will be protected from rock chips or cracks.

As I recall, our dealer had it installed it on our MDX for somewhere around $700 to $800. Not cheap, but it does work well and looks good. We also had some of the film installed around our door edges as door edge guards and inside our door handles to protect against scratches.
