| I am interested in a soft sided carrier for the MDX and am limited by the (unexplainable) 24" of space between the two built-in rooftop bars on the Touring X. I need soft-sided because of space considerations when I'm not using the carrier. I HAVE searched the site and seen a few recommendations to try the Weathertec, but no mention of anyone who has actually USED a soft-sided carrier on a Touring MDX. Interestingly, the Weathertec is 39" X 32" so if anyone has successfully used it, or any other soft carrier, please respond with brand name, dimensions of carrier and any other info on how you got it to fit. It appears to me that the configuration of the built-in rooftop bars (without any adjustability) on the X is essentially useless for most practical purposes; I wonder why they bothered. This doesn't even include the location of the antenna right back there in the way! I helped a friend load his Envoy which has side rails and completely adjustable front and back rails up top - Acura should be embarrassed at their system in comparison. Thanks in advance for any replies! |

Unfortunately, your options are few. AFAIK, the two solutions are to purchase the Acura MDX Luggage Basket (and lay the carrier in/on the basket), or perform the "mcclendons modification" which involves moving the rear cross bar to the undocumented mounting points farther aft on the roof.
I have purchased a spare rear cross bar from Tim @ Hondacuraworld to perform the mod but haven't had the time/need to do it yet. |

The Yakima load baskets are specified by Yakima for the MDX factory rack. To those baskets you can attach the Yakima (or other) soft carrier. One basket comes with rails so you can also attach other items. |

Ford sells a canvas/vinyl type unit that has straps that will atatch to a luggage rack. Since it's cloth and not hard plastic, it's size varies as you fill it with junk. It is water tight and works pretty good. My bro-in-law got one for his exploder.
Only problem is it says FORD on the outside. Look at the Ford site then go to accessories or call your local dealer inquiring for one. Then look who mfgs it and start looking for a better price. |

norcalchuck:
Thanks much for the info. It looks like the Yakima basket plus a suitable bag will take care of my needs.
BlueStreak:
Have you seen this Ford bag in actual use on an MDX? Remember, unlike most other vehicles, there's only 24" of space between racks on an X. |
