Has anyone replaced the trip display to a color tuner?
If so what make and model? |

| If you have Navi, you don't even have to replace the screen. There are very good threads about converting the Navi screens to play DVD's. THe search function will keep you busy reading for a while. Try "blitzsafe" in addition to Navi. |

That's the problem, I don't have the navigation system. I was looking for a color display that made the truck still look stock.
Does anyone know the model number of the navi display? |

| It can't reasonably be done. |

If you mean trade in your X for one with Navi, that can be done. If you mean buying a Navi unit from a dealer and trying to install it, it would probably be cheaper, and certainly easier, to trade in you car and get a new one with Navi.
The Navi is hooked into inertial sensors, speed sensor, air conditioning, microphone, DVD input, and so many other systems in the MDX that laying one in a non-Navi would be very painful and very probably ineffective.
But if you do it, please post the results. |

There has been a lot of interest in retrofitting the Acura navigation in an MDX. In my view the following are the key components (ignore the wiring aspects for now):
1. The display unit which controls both Navigation as well as climate control for the manual mode
2. The DVD drive/computer unit as well as the DVD itself
3. Harness between 1 and 2.
3. GPS antenna (plugs into NAVI drive unit)
4. Microphone ( an inexpensive $5 device should work fine!) - not an essential feature for me and a voice command switch
5. Speaker or radio interface for voice prompts.
Has anybody priced the ACURA dealer prices for the first three items? The rest of the items are generic and most likely identical to the Alpine systems and can be obtained from Alpine.
Based on my prior Pioneer NAV installation the only inputs that the NAV needs from the car (apart from power) are:
1. Speed sensor input (probably already at the trip computer connector)
2. Parking brake switch.
3. Reverse Switch
4. Illumination
While the factory installation probably uses special harnesses to avoid direct wiring of the above, any decent stereo shop (or dedicated DIY person like us!) can identify the appropriate wires and splice into them with standard taps.
If there is enough interest perhaps we can convince Tim to get us these parts for less than the dealer retail - I have ordered the shop manuals from Helm to get a better idea about the wiring aspects!
I am electronics engineer with 25 years under my belt and am determined to get to the bottom of this!!

I have responded to several of these threads. In one thread Tim (of hondacuraword.com) DID in-fact check on the prices of the Navi system.
The prices, predictably, are astronomical. I believe Tim said the DVD-ROM unit/CPU is $3k all by itself...
{NOTE TO CAR THIEVES -- although that thing under the passenger seat looks expensive, it is WORTHLESS to anybody who doesn't have the rest of the system...}
ANYHOW, you are still sorta correct - it is not technically impossible to convert from non-navi to factory style nav - it is however economically unfeasible.
If you really are jonesing for Navi you would be better off getting an aftermarket unit from Alpine, Pioneer or JVC(some even have touch screen compatible units). Find a really good car hi-fi shop and they can mill up the appropriate trim so that everything goes in the approximate factory position(OTHERS HAVE POSTED PICS OF THAT TOO). They can also install an absolutely COMPETITION GRADE audio system while your dash is in pieces. If you price out that option you'd still be money ahead compared to trying to retrofit...
BTW All the things I mentioned WILL come up in a SEARCH for Navi/factory or even look for ME in the other threads...
GOOD LUCK! |

| I wasn't looking to add the navigation. I just wanted a color display that fit in the same slot that the trip computer is in to use as a display for movies. |
