Is it possible - auto-closing moonroof? - Click HERE for Original Thread

A question for the tech people out there. Is it feasable to tap into the rain sensor and have my moonroof automatically close if the ignition is off and it starts to rain?

I've already once forgotten to close the moonroof and remembered as it began to rain. Since it already has the rain sensor, you wouldn't think that it would be such a stretch to have it automatically trigger the closing of the moonroof -- and the windows for that matter.

Reminds me of when I ordered my MDX the end of last year. The dealer had me come in to look at one that came in--different color. It was pouring rain and they were going to bring it into to the shop area. It was taking a really long time so I went into the shop and the sales manager and salesman were frantically mopping up a flood from the inside of the MDX--the salesman had left the moonroof open. I pity the poor soul who bought that vehiicle after the seats, dash, headliner et al were drenched. I passed on that unit.

It is possible, the new E-class wagon has it.

I don't think the question was if any car could do it but given the electrical characteristics of the MDX would it be possible to hack it so it could do it too.

I would have to say that it seems reasonable that it could.

You would need to figure out the power supply for the rain sensor, hopefully it would be able to work without a significant number of other items turned on.

Then you would need to use that output to drive a relay that would both power up the circuit for the moon roof and close a contact simulating the switch used to close the moon roof.

Assuming there is a sensor to tell if the sunroof, it could then be used to open the sunroof closure switch if necessary to prevent battery drain.

Overall not necessarily an easy task but it shouldn't be too tough.
Kind of like what I did to my last set of garage doors, if open too long I had them close automatically. Haven't done that at this house yet...

Keep an eye out here as well:

Hi RPitterle:

___The only regret that you may have is when the rain sensor decides to close the moon roof for no apparent reason. Even with the sensitivity turned down to its minimum, I can distinctly remember 2 times when the wipers started and stopped for 1 sweep on 2 perfectly dry and sunny afternoons with the wipers in auto? I will speak to my wife to get a more accurate count in case she has seen it happen even more than that. I have only driven the X at most, maybe 750 miles out of its 5300 total miles so I am sure it has happened even more frequently.

___Good Luck

Yup, I was wondering about that possibility myself...

And what about when using the windshield washer? Will that not trigger the moonroof to close? I suppose the system logic could be configured to not trigger when the washer is on.

Following that thought it would probably be easier (without alarm) to have the sunroof close when the car is turned off. If you want to vent the car, just open the windows a bit.
RPitterle
I'd specifically want it to close during rain only if the ignition is off. If it's on, I can make my own decision about closing the roof.

whynot mdx - thanks for the website, it looks promising.

slash007 - I like your idea of adding it to the alarm system. I wonder how difficult it would be to add it to the remote lock that comes with the X?

I'd just like to be able to close (or open) the sunroof with a single push of the button, rather than having to hold down the button. What a pain. Even a VW can do that!
ImOnlyTen
VW and Audi cant close at a push of a button. They use knobs, which is alot better than buttons

is the rain sensor an option or do all MDX's have this feature.
RPitterle
Rain sensing wipers are standard on the Touring models.
