New X, 11 miles on it, at dealer noticed a small scratch in the horizontal black area below the grill.
At first the dealer offer to replace the grill piece, then service manager explained it was all one piece with the bumper.
They have now offered to sand and paint the black area.
Is there something I should try first to remove the scratch?
It isn't very big and I almost think I would leave it instead of having to worry about flaking paint in the future... |

Dealer told you the truth, bumper is all one piece (I looked at the same thing for the same reason).
Sorry, don't know how to remove scratch from black part of bumper, hopefully, someone will have an answer for you.
I would not remove/repaint the bumber for that! Repaint is sometimes not as good as original, at BEST, it is as good. The front end (e.g. front bumper) will get the most abuse on the whole vehicle from freeway driving (e.g. stone chips). No way would I mess with the front bumper if I didn't have to.
Anyway, just MHO. |

| Do they have another X the same color? They could swap the bumpers for you. Its easy to take off the X's front bumper. |

The scratch is so small (less than 1 inch and not deep at all) it isn't worth swapping bumpers and it is only in the black area around the grill so they were suggesting painting that area only with a black paint not repainting the entire bumper which is fine.
So I guess my questions are:
1) Is there a compound I should try on the bare unpainted black plastic area to remove the scratch.
2) Do you think they would be able to use a good quality paint that would adhere to this area? They suggested a flat too match existing look, but if painted I would think it should be painted with the same paint used on a black MDX, gloss, clearcoat, and all. |

Aren't the major body parts engraved with the vehicles VIN? I thought I remembered that this done for ant-theft. |

The front bumper grill area is NOT "gloss black". If it is painted, you will need to use a flat black OR add a flattening agent to standard black paint. For that reason, you also don't want it clear coated (clear coat enhances gloss). There is special (semigloss) "bumper black" paint available as well as "black out" paint (e.g. used on door window trim, etc.). |

| I know it is flat now, if painted I just think the Nighthawk Black Perl with clear coat would be easier to maintain. |
