Dose anyone know any portable dvd player that i can mount to the ceiling of a car, upside down?
im thinking of regular portable dvd player that you can flip over and attach to the pre-installed holding unit at the ceiling. of course the player must turn the movie 180 degree and switch left to right speaker.
may be im just dreaming :p |

| Samsung makes a portable DVD player with 10" screen that will reverse the picture 180 degrees. Looking to get one after I get my new car. (MDX vs. FX). |

Does anyone know how to mount/plug in a portable DVD player (such as Samsung 10" mentioned by SHINDIG) at the ceiling?
cp_ssrebba:
You mentioned "the pre-installed holding unit at the ceiling". Do you actually have one or you want one like that?
What I am looking for is a portable DVD player that can be plug into (not permanent installed) the ceiling. So I could take the player out when I need.
Thanks. |

| Whats the model # on the Samsung? |
|
|
| mdxde |
one4gatr,
I believe that is Samsung Portable DVD Player with 10" TFT Display
Model: DVD-L200. I saw one at BestBuy for $799. It has a reverse button to make the display upside down. So it is possible to mount it at the ceiling.
Does anyone know how to make it portable at the ceil? without permanent installed? Thanks. |

Yeah I saw that in the Best Buy ad this weekend. I will go take a look.
Thanks |

| I saw the Samsung 10' one at Costco for $670+. Looks great, and I need to know how to mount it on the top or just place it on the center console. |
|

i checked samsung out at circuit city. the reverse worked nice. it is to show the screen to the person infront of you. but no one had any idea about the ceiling holder.
my question is will it play upside down? will it play well? wont it break later?
somebody invent this. this will be a great idea.
and no i dont have a ceiling holder or saw one. |

| How about AudiovoxDVD in a bag . it has a detachable screen that you can attach to the headrest. |

I'm using the samsung right now. I flip the armrest all the way back and use vlecro to keep the samsung in place.
The only problem is that the battery doesn't last long and the audio is not that great. The car adapter is another $80. I just went to Sam's Club and bought a converter that plugs into the lighter socket for $14 and the wires fit into the center console.
I'm in the process of installing a LCD in the headrests and adding a DVD player my self and that will cost about $780 which is about the same price as the portable. (I miss my armrest.) |

zbaker,
Are you going to go with aftermarket headrest/monitor combo or will you add monitors to your current headrests?? I thought about modifying what I have already but let us know how it goes.
Sounds like a fun project!:29: |

| If there is a Fry's Electronics in your area, I saw an ad today (in my local paper) for a mobile video DVD system consisting of a Blaupunkt DVD/MP3/CD player and an Abfox 7" flipdown LCD screen for $299. I have the Blaupunkt player and the Clarion flipdown screen installed in my MDX and it works great. You can get it installed at a Fry's or Best Buy store for about $150-200 bucks. The player is under the driver's seat. |

I'm doing them myself. I ordered a extra headrest just incase. I've already done one and it turned out pretty well and wasn't as difficult as I thought. I like doing that kind of stuff and can't wait to get started. The other LCD monitor is on it's way and I have the DVD player. |

zbaker,
If you get a chance, could you post pics and details about how you did the headrests? I would be very appreciative. Thanks. |

| The hardest part was getting the connection in the seat. I still have the DVD player to install and the wireless headphones. Hopefully this weekend. |

zbaker,
Great pics!:29: That doesn't look too bad at all. A couple of questions. What did you screw the brackets to in the headrest? Is there some wood or metal?
Does anyone know if I can just put some Y-adapters on the factory DVD outs and run all 3 screens with no problems? Thanks for the help.
Looks like the whole system will be sweet!!! |

| Thanks. It just screws into the foam. Believe it or not that's enough to hold it in. I do recommend ordering an extra headrest if you're going to do it yourself. The other thing is to cut the hole in the leather much smaller then the display and pull the foam out under the leather. That helps to make it nice and snug. Good luck. |

So did you order two extra headrests or one? Did you need one to practice on first? That looks really sharp!! |
|

| Just one. the first one turned out OK but the second was much better. So I used the second and third headrest. It was a $99 training investment. |

zbaker,
More questions. How did you route the cable into the seat? Did you use the existing hole for the headrest poles or did you have to cut new ones?
What kind of ends are on the monitors? Is it s-video, rca? I can't tell from the pics.
Also, where did you get the monitors from and how is the video quality on them?
Thanks again. |

| On sale for $1400?! I like the DIY idea in an earlier post, but I think we'll be playing "I Spy" during trips in the X for a while longer. |

phins2rt,
I bought everything from www.etronics.com for about $600 the LCD's were the most expensive at $167 each. The monitor display is very clear and 5.8".
There is a solid post for the headrest and you have to dirll a hole about 1 inch from the plastic the post goes into. I'll take a pic later and post it.
Just be careful when you take the the seat back off. If you need more tips on the seat let me know. |

| phins2rt |
zbaker,
Did you have to get new clips for the seat back after you removed it? Or were you careful enough that you could reuse them? |

The ends are like s-video and the connector goes to rca left, right and video. |

On the drivers seat I broke one of the L shaped clips and on the passenger side I broke the two bottom clips but I was able to fix those.
There are 2 L shaped clips on the top and two hard plastic round clips on the bottom. You need to squeeze the bottom in the clips come out and the top slides out. Its' not as easy as it sounds. |

Thanks zbaker. I recall someone else doing this and ordering the clips before hand from Tim.
I may have found a way to splice into the factory RES output from the DVD. It is starting to get cold here so I don't know if this will be a project I do now or hold off until the spring but all of the help is appreciated!:29:
One more thing: Where did you run the power for these screens? |
|
|
| zbaker |
| With the LCD I bought it's all in the same cable and I haven't connected it yet. I plan to split off the amp power cable that I ran. Hopefully this weekend I can do that and install the DVD player. |

| My DVD solution is to use my laptop computer. The laptop, as do most, has a DVD player. My laptop screen is 14.1". I just bring along a DC/AC power converter, which I plug into the rear plug, and use a cassette adapter to play the sound through the stock tape player. I use it to entertain my kids on long road trips. This is a good solution for any of you who already have a DVD player. My laptop fits snugly between the two front seats, resting on the center console that is in the rearward position. I use a strap to tie it down. Probably wouldn't do in an accident -- the lapton might go flying! But I only use it on those occasional rode trips, apx 4 times a year. |

Hi zbaker,
Any updates on the install? |
|
|
| zbaker |
I did get everything installed but have no pics. I was in a rush to get things in for an up coming road trip and need to go back and fix a few things.
Everything works but I think I want to move the DVD player, not sure where yet. Right now it's sitting under the cig adapter and tray. |

| Well if you get a chance post some pics. Thanks. |

I really like your setup, and would like to install something similar.
I've got a request, and some questions for you, if you dont' mind...
Request 1: Can you snap a picture of the hole you drilled on top of your seat? I'm curious to see it's exact location.
Question 1: Your DVD player is described as an in-dash unit. Most people end up placing it under the Driver's seat. Where did you put it? Can you take a picture of it?
Question 2: My assumption is that you are splitting the DVD player's S-Video output. Am I correct? Did the split signal have a negative impact on the display?
Question 3: Where did you end up grabbing power from?
Thanks!

Request 1: Give me a day or two and I'll post a picture.
Question 1: I didn't put it under the seat because my daughter has a lot of requests. Give me a day or two and I'll post a picture.
Question 2: I am splitting the output from the DVD player (with Y adapters) and I haven't had a problem with signal loss.
Question 3: My DVD Player came with a cig adapter so for right now I'm using that. I do plan to wire it to the battery in the spring. I have an amp for the sub running to the back so I'll tap into that.
Hope that helps. In a day or two I'll have some pictures to post. |

really portable and headrest mount table in a small and slim form.
Wow, I am impressed. 7" screen. Removable headrest monitor with built-in player, convertable to table top use w/ batt pack & AC adapter, remote, free mount, and all for less than a standard 7" screen alone. I can get one for each front headrest and it will still cost me far less than than a standard sual- 5.6" screen install with separate player, plus labor. And, w/ integrated players, each person gets their own movie or game. Not a big name like Samsung, Toshiba or Panasonic, but hey, good ideas need to start SOMEWHERE.
Thanks for sharing about this find. |

Here is the temporary power and the location of the DVD. The wires fit along the side so when it's closed you can't see them.
I do plan to cut an opening so the the DVD player can sit back further and put a molding around it. |
