Hi all. There is a discussion going on on hidforum.com about NHSTA making the sale of aftermarket HID kits illegal after 8/15. To follow the discussion, please go to http://hidforum.com/forum/showthrea...s=&threadid=596

Steve, have you head anything about this?

Are you sure this is not just B.S or someone trying to sell some stock?

There is nothing on the SEMA or NHTSA site that says any final resolution has been determined. The NHTSA is investigating and asking for input is the latest I can find on their site.

Link Follow the link to the dot.gov site at the bottom and do the search. Lots of comments but no resolution.

I agree with an assessment on the Pilot.org site. Someone is trying to sell some stock...

Aftermarket ones are illegal for street use, so what am I missing here?

I'm with you. It's the same guy posting the same thing in every forum. Wouldn't the DOT have some sort of public discussion for such a "rule change". I find it difficult to believe a rule change could be implemented with an effective date just 3 weeks away without a public comment period. And does DOT even have jurisdiction over products that are supposedly for use OFF road?

I looked through some of those links (and ensuing ones) and never saw any official position statement; only the stuff that's been around awhile: DOT/NHTSA is *studying* glare effects of ALL HID headlights.

(insert "fishy" smiley here)

Most aftermarket HIDSs actually state clearly on the box or through their websites that they are for off road use only and not DOT approved. I don't think making illegal would make any sense as they are technically illegal right now (Not DOT approved).

I think its bs myself but I like to keep everyone in the loop. The argument would make selling aftermarket kits illegal, not just buying them. Theyre trying to stop it from both ends. I dont think it will fly - too difficult to enforce.

Everyone has to hurry up and get the HID's, I'm pretty sure the internet will still be able to sell as an off-road option. Stating not street legal on the package. It's a matter of whether the police will actually enforce the laws. How would the police know whether the HID came with the car or where aftermarket, the police would have to study all headlight options on all cars?? Doubt it???

is this going to hinder getting replacement bulbs if we have to?

I've thought the same exact thing. Unless it's a 'glaring' problem I doubt the cops care one way or another. If after-market kits are already illegal for street use, who is enforcing this anyway?
I see 87' Sentras with HIDs....
Can you imagine town cops or troopers getting instructions to be on alert for illegal HID use?
About the only way the gov could go would be to have the DMV perform inspections at license renewal time, etc. Or spot inspections.
Is it that prevalent they are going to do that? And like you say, have to keep up with what models come with HIDs, etc....

Hi All:

___Not that I believe HID kits will be banned but the other point in regards to pulling over a possible non-OEM HID user is who would be pulled over? The family of 4 with a $40,000 + luxury SUV or the 22 yr. old in the 87 Sentra? The trooper would have to really know his stuff about HID’s on the X given the X5, Toureg, XC90 (optional), and RX330 all have OEM based HID’s? Can you imagine the training involved in distinguishing the vehicle (any vehicle) at night let alone if that vehicle came with OEM based HID’s? Lastly, HID’s are DOT approved for OEM use on quite a number of vehicles. It’s just the after markets that are supposedly illegal for hwy use. I know most already know this but the discussion may have led some to think this was not the case.

___Good Luck

So when HIDs are outlawed, only the outlaws will have them? Something like that....guess we are already there..oh well, someday we can laugh at all this.
I hate to think of the guy who spends $800 and gets his MDX assemblies customized for projection lamps, and then gets slapped with a fix it-ticket because it is not stock, even though it meets all DOT requirements for safe lighting.
Good reason to stick with the basic kits until this gets cleared up.

I have a HUGE fear that this is NOT going to be won on logic -- it is a easy to "criminalize" piece of hardware (like, uh, 'assault rifles'...) and the forces that DO NOT LIKE HIDs include a large number of AARP types...

Currently AARP has NOT officially thrown support behind the HID ban but if they do --- fuhgedaboutdit! They will be HISTORY quicker than you can say "but I only use my AR-15 for plinking cans and paper targets"...

Folks, I am NOT some radical gun nut (heck I don't even own any firearms or belong to the NRA) BUT this is exactly the kind of hysteria that led to banning weapons based on APPEARANCE not FUNCTION!

It CAN happen (though if/when it does you can bet that there will be ALOT more info out there) -- there is CURRENTLY no ban in the works -- someone probably just wants to unload their inventory before all the college kids go back to campus...

As a proud member of AARP, and I did not know we were a 'type'. You only have to be over 50, and it's one of those things that many join because it is almost too cheap not to. Seriously, the hotel and car rental discounts, etc. have been as good or better than AAA.
But that aside, most AARP concerns have to do with prescription drug legislation. Something else our government has never been able to get a grip on.
That aside, whatever logic does exist with regards to the leagal and proper use of HIDs probably lies between the two philosophies presented here.
While I basically agree with your stance on guns, renov8r, there is too much of a 'good thing'. That is a lot different than saying all vehicles should have superior lighting, then HIDs would not even be an issue.

...and what if they come across these web sites during training  they'll know exactly where mine are hidden  (might have to delete some threads :p ) They should first go after those non-oem subs that require a garden hose thick power cable from the battery. They make me hurt all over....

Let them peel our cold dead fingers off our HIDs....
Careful.... 'delete some threads' is fighting words.....

State police are about to introduce a new weapon in their fight against HID's, a Ballast Detector, just run in front of vehicle and it shows were the ballast is mounted and tells trooper if stock or aftermarket!!:13:

Can it be rigged to tell the trooper something else too? (isn't selling going to be illegal? using too?)

I bet the seeling will not be illegal because they can sell them legally for Off-Street use, it's a legal loop hole for the seller. That's how they are able to sell now. Similiar to those cable descramblers, they sell them legally by saying you have to contact your local cable company and notify them that your using the descrambler. Like anyone will do that!!!

I know that cracks me up. I still see these ads in back of magazines for the old descramblers.
Cable is still quite easy nowadays, esp if you have friends on the 'inside'.
But I understand modified satellite receivers are rare and very risky.
