Real Carbon Fiber MDX Hood - Click HERE for Original Thread

If you think this topic is foolish, then hit the back button. Everyone else, I found a large shop that can make custom carbon fiber hoods for the MDX. The hoods will be:

- high quality, high standards, high value
- temperature PPG clearcoat and UV Protection, Weather treated
- aluminum latch support
- Grade "A" fibers
- JDM Spec hoods
- USDM spec car compatible
- Weather treated and tested. Rain, Wind and Heat tested.
- special Spn 6khs fiber.
- And some of our carbon fiber hoods and bonnets even qualify for our Ultra Light Weight category of hoods and bonnets, normally weighing 8-9.5lbs*

These hoods are solid enough to stand on and look really sharp. The woven fibers are very impressive under a deep clear coat finish. In order to produce these custom hoods at least 10 people need to make a full deposit. Once everyone who is interested makes their payment, the hoods can be made. Shipping takes 3-4 weeks. I'm still working out a price but I think it will be between $500-$650 Anyone else interested?

I look forward to your pics.

Not trying to be negative here, but what's the point of going to so much trouble? Unless I'm missing something here about all you could possibly gain would be a few pounds, and on a heavyweight like the MDX that would be a non issue.

Is there something I've overlooked?

I think it's just another look. . .

Hi Manus1980:

___I wonder if 3 months on the Atkins diet might do as much for the performance of the X … Just kidding of course ;)

___I also would like to see a very close up and magnified shot of the paint on the hood after the Carbon Fiber piece is in place myself.

___Good Luck

w0ot wo0t! That's some bombgina. I'd much rather spend that cash on some HID's........but a carbon fiber hood idea is nice. If I was trying to enhance the performance of the MDX I would definitely be interested.:4:

I need at least 8 more serious car enthusiasts before I can get the hoods produced.

I suppose that you can always find somebody that thinks that "looks cool" but this is pretty extreme -- a carbon fiber (or fiberglass) hood is really something whose "roots" come from drag racing and there are so many other areas that would seem to be in need of substantial upgrading before anyone would seriously consider the MDX competitive at the drag strip.

Not to offend, but I would say that the mindset that such an 'aftermarket' accessory comes from is what polarizes some folks with regard to NOPI and "import tuners".

I suppose that the reason that somebody is offering the carbon fiber hood is because it is easy to do compared to more high function part -- create a mold from a stock hood, create a blank, lay-up the CF and do the finishing work. If you were going to try to create some body pieces that would reduce drag or increase down-force you'd need a lot more skill/time/research. Similarly, if you were going to make a CF intake you'd need to prototype the thing in steel, weld it up, try it out and then "commit" it to CF...

I don't mean to pick a fight or anything, I am just thinking out loud...

Maybe I have it wrong. Maybe if some comany like hks or who ever else is the current "R&D center" of aftermarket parts sees that there are folks who would buy a carbon fiber for the MDX THEN they will be motivate to work on truly useful power enhancing parts,

Do you think that somebody is working on a supercharger for the MDX or Pilot? I would guesstimate that you could get away with a smallish system that would pump up the output by 45-60 hp without a major risk of instant transmission failure and/or toasting the motor. That brings up another point -- in the "olden days" of performance tuning it was not unheard of to overdo ones power add-ons -- maybe the mixture was set too lean or the compression was too high or the displacement upped a bit too much. You have a problem like inadequate fuel delivery or blown cylinder head gasket or inadequate radiator and you could fix THAT with a trip to the "speed parts store" for a high volume/high pressure fuel pump, or new "metal core head gaskets" or "all aluminum" high capacity radiator and you were back in business. It seems that there are too few modification that fit this model in the "import tuner" world -- you either see the appearance type stuff of the total "budget busting" stuff like custom pistons for hundreds apiece, stand alone digital ECU/fuel injection, and total hand built suspension pieces.

Personally I think that if anything I would stick to a simple air filter housing modification {of which manuses looks like one of the better ones ;) } until/unless somebody who has the resources to verify that motor and tranny are really capable of sustaining more power...

A fiberglass hood on the MDX is a waste In my opinion, it reminds me of the 70's with hot rods looking to loose weight for the 1/4 mile runs. I don't believe the weight loss on the MDX is going to do anything for the 1/4 mile run or even light to light run. It may be wanted for a cosmetic reason, but can see spending that kind of money.

I believe the point to this endeavor would be purely for those seeking hi-tech looks and exclusivity. I cannot see anyone opting for this to shed weight.
Heck, I can help alot of you drop 60lbs. off your X quick! Just unbolt your side steps. :D

Are you taking about the magnetic properties of carbon fiber? It seems to have a polarity opposite to the female tush.

Are you saying that a carbon fiber hood for the MDX has the properties of a babe magnet?

According to the quote about looking at the first pictures, that is correct.

If you think you can buy one after the group buy, think again. I need 8 more serious members. A well made CF hood will set the car apart from the others.
