I just got my new chrome steps and started to install it - I have run into as small problem! What is the best way to remove the plastic plugs installed on the threaded holes? I tried removing and broke the heads on two of them and ended up pushing them inside to rattle around forever! I am afraid of scratching the underside if I use a long tool to get leverage against something, and needs too much force to just pull with a pair of slip joint pliers!

How do you guys do it?

Thanks.

Take a small set of needle-nosed pliers and jam them into the center of the plugs - they'll pull right out! I used a squared-edge set and twisted slightly when inserted.

As a tip - I also added a small drop of Loc-Tite Blue to every bolt prior to install for additional strength and to limit loosening over time. Home Depot sells it. Don't get red - get the Blue.

Take a Phillips screw driver ( make sure it has a point tip) and put pressure straight up. The pointy tip of the Phillips screw driver will dig into the plastic and create an X. use the screw driver to unscrew the plastic plug. You may also use a fine set of needle point pliers to take out the broken one.

I used knife (shop knife?) It is extremely easy to remove with it.

Thank you all folks! After working on cars for so many years, for whatever reason (utter stupidity ?) I had failed to realize that the plug is actually a 2 part contraption, which is released by pushing in the center button! Once you push the center pin, the plug practically falls out of the hole! I had been trying to pry it out all the while yesterday with the resulting frustration!

Thanks again, and now I will get on with the installation of the 72 screws!

I did the same and so far have not heard them rattling. I might add I also rarely notice the famous tank sloshing or the brake clunk.

I forced the first one out before I realized they were so easy to remove!
