I wanted to see if anyone has mounted a handsfree kit in the car and if so how did they mount it. I have been told no one makes a kit that will slip in between tht dash and radio area for the phone because it is to tight. If so what do you recomend and any pictures would be great.

This thread has photos of my CARK-91H (handsfree system with privacy handset) Nokia car kit install. The external dual-band gain antenna was mounted on the right rear quarter window. Excellent system.

I've used the Nokia hands free kit in my motor coach for 3 years. It works very well. Last year I added a 3 watt booster from:

http://cellantenna.com/Boosters/da4000.htm

This is an excellent unit and's about the size of a pack of cigaretttes. It takes care of many of those dead spots as we travel around the country. If I remember correctly they have a booster for both types of cell phones, the 800 mhz and 900 mhz, check them out.

I looked into external amplifiers, as I had one with the last Nokia car kit installation with an analog Nokia 232. They are not really marketed by the carriers (as they were with analog phones) as I was told that in some networks, they can interfere with security systems they have in place that are loosely based on a "snapshot" of the hardware profile of the phone (similar to Microsoft's anti-piracy snapshots of your computer hardware installation), and that there could be authentication problems.

I've only heard anecdotal evidence on this from a couple of people, and I did not hear that there were problems. Are you using your amplifier on a dual-band tri-mode digital TDMA phone? Have you used the amplifier while roaming? If I knew there was no issue on this I might consider an amplifier.

That said, however, the single most important upgrade anyone can make for better reception is a good externally mounted gain antenna. Operating a hand-held radio transceiver close to body, inside a metal cage, e.g, the car, really hobbles signal propagation. With the external antenna, I do not encounter the signal problems in certain areas where I use the phone. A three db gain antenna is the equivalent of doubling the power output.

Sorry to take so long to get back to you, been taking care of the "honey do's".

Yes, we had the external amp on the whole time we were gone last winter (about 6 months). Covered most of the southwest and never had a problem. We use the ATT Digital One Rate Plan with a Nokia 3200 series phone. If you've ever driven CA 95 between Needles and Blythe you'll understand what desolation means, you're in the middle of no-where. We talked to friends in Phoenix for about 1/2 that distance and had decent reception the whole time. A few spots were a little scratchy, but, I was impressed.

A good antenna makes a lot of difference. I'm sure we're getting a 5 to 8 db gain from our roof top antenna, it's 13 ft off the ground and we've got a 40' X 8' steel ground plane. The folks that build the amp claim that on a clear line-of-sight shot you can get a tower 75 miles away. If I remember correctly they talk about a 25 db gain.

how did squeeze that phone kit wire in between the trim?
bulan
they just squished it in there. the cradle is on a flat piece of metal that comes out between the trim too.
