I''ve done a search and cannot find an answer that satisfies me. Auto Lok sounds puny, Lo-Jack sound unreliable (and not sold within a 100 miles of me according to their web site) and I live in the #4 car theft region of the country!
During the night some creep(s) tried to steal my daughter's 2001 Integra. They "slim jimmed" the door so no broken glass, but they busted the steering column housing, broke the turn signal lever, and busted the ignition and left it on the floor. They took off without trashing the car (count my blessings?) The local PD responded within 4 minutes of the call to 911, took fingerprints, etc.
I have the car at the local Acura dealer courtesy of our AMEX Auto ins. (through COSTCO, will get to see how good it really is)$98 just to look at it, good grief.
This is the 2nd time some one has tried to take this car, last time at my son's Apt. in Sacramento, that time they found they couldn't start it, so they crawled underneath and butchered all the lines they could find in the dark.
This could happen to the X (though not in my driveway since I don't leave it there.) What is everyone's revered opinion on the best theft deterrent devices? |

You want to keep them from steeling right, Lo-Jack is really to find it after the fact. AutoLoc looks pretty good to me. Unless your car is a gem if the lock is visible over the shifter or wheel and is reasonably difficult to remove they will likely move on to another vehicle.
A large dog with an invisible fence boundary that approaches the location of the car.
Audible and visible alarm, perhaps with pager notification and hidden engine cutoff.
As far as I know the MDX should be safe from steeling with the electronic immobilizer circuit, but subject to vandals... |
|
|
| jswift2000 |
| Iagree - a dog is a great eterrent. Its tough to prevent vandals from being attracted to the car. You may try rigging a light with a motion detector near the car thats being targeted. Sorry to hear thats happening. Some people are just a$$holes. |

Almost like when you register a bicycle. The number goes into some big void, and if the bike is stolen it never does any good anyway. |

well you get your vin number etched onto your windows for a few good reasons.....
mainly because the vin # is openly showing on each and every single window.... thus making the "chop shop" not want the vehicle. the car door is the most expensive part of a vehicle (to sell to a chop shop) and obviously a crook is not gonna want an etched window because he cant sell the doors. well nobody would buy em anyway. |

Thanks guys, actually I like shootist's suggestion the best :4:
Visited the dealer today and including labor, repair costs hit $513.00 to fix everything. Too bad the deductible is $500.00.
Anyway, they are going to fix it back to good as new, I'll have it back tomorrow, and then I'm selling it!
2001 TW/black int. Integra 2 door hatchback, sport wheels, 40K miles on it, runs awesome, looks so good it's guaranteed to draw car thieves, only asking $14K. |

Someone was telling me about another system similar to lojack, where you can get on the net and track your car no matter where it is.
Like if your spouse or kid has taken it and they are late returning.
Yes, I know...lots of scenarios could spin off of that....
The install is about $1100... supposedly a big insurance discount.
I like the idea of being able to track it yourself if you have a pc nearby, better than just hoping the cops do the same.
I'll post the website when I find it. |

| Another method I just thought of is like the one we use at work: All our Drivers have Nextel cell phones. We have their Nextel equipped with GPS chips so we can tell at any given time where our Trucks are. We can tell how fast they are moving, which direction they are going, what road/hiway they are on, or if they are stopped, where they are and how long they have been stopped. As you can imagine, we use this system for a number of reasons. track them on company computers. Works excellent. |

Having used a shotgun on someone before (Army Stockade Guard Duty) I think this an effective deterrent, but I can't stay up all night anymore (getting old, need my sleep)
laborlitigator will recite the dangers of having a rigged gun set up. |

I would not worry about them trying to steal the X. They were after the Integra for the parts (obviously). I live in Florida and the Integra (especially the older GSR and Type R) are a very popular vehicle and high theft item. The older models were easier to steal due to a poor theft deterrent system installed by the manufacturer.
Your 2001 Integra however should be a little bit harder to steal though. I would save your money and not worry about the X getting stolen (unless they are going to tow it away !). Otherwise buy the shotgun, it is cheaper and allot more effective ! |

Very true, and borne out by the guy at the Service Dept. He said the morons can't tell the difference between a 2001 and the older models, so they try anyway. Well, like I said earlier, when I get it back tomorrow it's up for sale.
Thanks to all for your suggestions and for keeping the humor in it. If we don't laugh we cry, keep on chucklin':2: |

I personally don't like the lo-jack because it is not satellite based, it uses a radio system. In city area's it works great but as you get to the suburbs and farther there recovery rate drops quickly. I think the MDX is pretty much unstealable with the coded key ignition system. If you need to take the next step and want to secure the interior or exterior damage, I would recommend the lastest and newest G-5 system from Clifford.

An amazing new system.

This one is about double the price of the Clifford. Using satellite and wireless technology. Provides quite a bit of information, plus being able to track your car yourself online.

Here's one for the books:
Clovis PD called today, they nabbed the guy who tried to steal the Integra from my driveway. :29:
Turns out his prints were already in their system, and he also tried to steal another car a few blocks from my house on the same night, but failed. That owner also called the PD, they also took prints, and Wah Lah, they all match. When the Officer called, he asked " I already know the answer to this question, but when we take him in, his lawyer is going ask if you granted persmission for Mr. Jesus Gonzalez to enter your vehicle" Good grief, like I'm going to say yes, Duh! :1pat:
Anyway, Kudos to the men and women in Blue. :29: :claphead: |

That's pretty incredible they were able to catch the thief using fingerprints. I can't remember ever hearing of lifting fingerprints from a car theft unless it involved another major crime.
I remember a story once of someone coming out to thier car in the morning and finding a homeless man sleeping in the back seat. Instead of getting freaked out and angry, the owner decided to let the homeless man sleep in the car every night to help the guy out and also to deter anyone from stealing the car.
Not sure if it's true...

Makes me happy to live here. Crime overall in Clovis is low, so law enforcement probably has more time to spend on individual cases.
I lived near downtown San Jose, and a drunk in the wee hours of the morning decided to see if he could make a bank shot with his car off my street-parked, and fortunately unocuppied mini-van, the cops shrugged their shoulders and told me I hope you have good insurance because the odds of catching this guy are remote at best. Maybe I should have had a homeless man in the back to catch a license number.
Not quite the same kind of crime, but a bashed car will get greater notice in a smaller community unless it's someone just passing through. |

Clovis PD claim to have a 4 minute response time, so crime does stay fairly low.
Another point of interest to those on the board, both my Integra and the other car the dude tried to steal are both white. Does that make Jesus Gonzalez a "Fem'? - see other thread for relevance :D |

Just got my Viper 791xv installed......
Pretty good alarm system. |
|
|
| Pauls MDX |
The best alarm I ever saw was in a James Bond movie. The alarm was hooked up to an explosive like C4 and when triggered, it was totally blow up the car and kill the intruder. A little excessive if you ask me, but it does get the job done and your point across don't mess with my vehicle. What if there is a false alarm??? Oops!!!
Another wild system I saw, is when the alarm is activated it would trigger 120 volts to go thru the entire vehicle, sending electricity thru the intruder. Many people were scared to use in case of a false trigger and an innocent bystander would touch vehicle and be killed by the electricty(Lawsuit city). Just a couple of extreme systems, but not really needed.

P.S. - I'll stick with my clifford for now!
