Good Morning all,

Just wanted some input on the better radar detectors out there. I will be taking a trip from NYC to Florida and i'm most certainly going to need one.

Thanks for your input!

I have an Escort for sale (with case!) that I bought in Oct. 1985, but you probably want to go with the prevailing consensus that favors the Valentine. Lots of threads on the subject.

The world of Radar detectors is very simple. You might think there are hundreds of choices out there but you're wrong. There are only two radar detectors that exist on planet Earth today.

The first is called the Valentine One and the second is called the Escort Passport 8500. You can search prior threads for details about these two.

If you get anything other than these two, all you have is an expensive dashboard ornament. Good Luck!

Thanks guys, i'm going to check out the Valentine One, may be a bit pricy but i'm sure it'll be worth it when it saves me from a few tickets.

I have the Valentine One and wouldn't use anything else! Once you get used to the arrows, you'll wonder how you got by without them.

Valentine 1. The best for years ( the developer was also developer for early Escorts)

I was recently in the market for a radar detector. Have had too many close calls recently on toll roads in orange county, ca in my new rig (2003 BMW M3 Conv).

I looked at both the Valentine One and the Escort 8500. After doing the research and weighing price/performance, I chose to go with the Escort 8500.

Reasons? I like the features available in the Escort 8500...and although the directional arrows are great, It wasn't worth the $150 premium in my mind. A new Valentine One is $399.00...you might find a used one on E-bay for $325-350....

I purchased the Escort for $250 with $12 shipping on E-Bay. Got it yesterday, and it alerted me to two cops this morning....

I'll definitely use it in the MDX on road trips....as long as I am aware that cops are in the vicinity...I don't need to know if they are on the left or right hand side of me....just as long as they are not behind me with their lights on!!! :D

I've had both and would go either way. Read my previous posts about the subject with some photos posted. Currently I am using the 8500 and it is great. The v1 is a good choice too and neither one is clearly better then the other. They both have their pros and cons but it is pretty even in the end and will save you a lot of tickets.

VALENTINE ONE

Saved me 5 tickets in one day in florida's I-75 in a 600 mi tampa-miami round trip.

The V1 alarmed me at least a mile away or more eah time.
it even alerted me half a mile away from a radar source pointing away from me

the best one was when an expedition was matching my speed at 85mph then the Ka band warned me about a 1.5 mile away. It was just an intermitent signal. I slowed down, the expedition went on to pass me and few more vehicles. 2 minutes later he got pulled over.

an hour later, another Ka beeped ahead, then faded, I slowed to speed limit then sped up after 2 minutes of no signal. next thing i know the ka warned me it's coming from behind stronger and stronger. slowed down to speed limit again. Saved me another ticket

the rest are just cops hiding in rest areas and highway medians. but the V1 detected them at least 1.5 mi away==long before you can get a visual on them.

My valentine on is paid for in one day

anyway, either 1 of them should give you more than adequate warning. Keep an eye on Ka bands in Florida
good luck

now i'm looking at buying another for my other car so as not to keep transferring the V1 to the other car all the time

was looking at an earlier V1 !. version in e bay but they still run close to a new V1 price. They're seling for $350

I might try the passport

The 2 top ones are the Valentine 1 and the Escort 8500, I prefer the Valentine unit myself. Do the research on the web and you will get alot of info.

I've had a V1 for about the last seven years or so. I just sent it in for an "upgrade" which essentially means I'll get a replacement unit for $269.00 (I think that was the price).

The V1 is the best detector on the market. The Escort might be good, but it's not going to be as good as the Valentine.

I cannot belive what folks pay for OLD V1s on ebay -- often they go for very very close to a current model. The least I've seen one sell for is about $280 -- that means you'd only need another $120 to get a BRAND NEW unit from Valentine -- a lot better deal then their "upgrade"....

Sorry, I don't do E-bay. I know if I send my old unit to Valentine and get a brand-new replacement, I don't have to worry about someone sending me a bogus Pay Pal account or wire xfer.

YMMV.
