I just bought a spare rim and tire from Tim. I was just wondering what other people have done with the donut. Can you take this back to the dealer and swap it for an oil change or anything?
Let me know.
Thanks |

| It ain't worth dirt. Maybe a wrecking yard will give you a few bucks for it. Mine is still holding up a garage wall. |

Now there's an idea! If you can market it like others marketed the Bose speakers, you could probably sell it for more than the full size spare cost you!;) |

Tried to sell mine on www.craigslist.org , a local SF Bay Area classifieds posting site. Although I was successful selling lots of other stuff on that site, I got no interest at all on the spare (it was first priced at $45, and lowered to $30 eventually).
For now, it is holding up a fence on the side of the house, right next to the garbage can. |

Search on "full size spare" if want all the details; but I recommend that everyone get a full size spare - especially if you travel in your X. |

Top 3 reasons for a full size spare:
Safety - vehicle handles properly on spare
Convenience - no need to immediately shop for a tire
Vehicle wear - the donut spare is rated low speed and low mileage not just for the rubber on the tire but because it puts a lot of stress on the differential. |

| I'd add another reason. Had to put the donut on the car over the weekend and the brake and ABS lights lit up on the dash. I'm assuming ABS does not work when the donut is on. |

That did not happen when I put my donut on (right rear); all was well (but note that I now have a FSS from Tim). My donut now is under our rear screened-in porch, holding up the brick wall of the house. |

May not be that bad an idea.
At least it would be better perhaps than having one tire with a considerably smaller diameter than the other. I would worry about damage to the rear end with one small and one regular. |

I've kept mine, as when I sell the car, I intend to list a price with and woithout accessoires, and remove all accessories not wanted and sell them separately, especially the full size spare and wheel which is very marketable. As none of the accessories will make a material difference in the value of the car on resale. |

The best idea yet! But that's why you live in Santa Rosa and I'm shooting at tires hanging from trees in the front yard.
(My brother- and sister-in-law live in the Sailing Hawk (Soaring Hawk?) area of SR, and I get to visit sometimes while on business in Pleasanton. They moved from Del. two years ago and probably will never go back. Can't blame them.) |

Any issue with
1) Ground clearance
2) Proximity to exhaust
with full size spare?
Any great deals on full size? (OK, OK sorry. I'll search) |

When I got mine almost two years ago, there were NO cheap steel 17" rims available. All 17" rims were alloy and $120+. That's still cheaper than Tim's $200. However for Tim's $200 you get OEM. Tires can be gotten and mounted for ~$130+ Bottom line you should be able to get an OEM spare for no more than $350. Going with an off-brand alloy should cost a minimum $250. I chose to go the OEM route and spent $340.
Use Search - some have gotten cheaper deals on ebay and even our own Classifieds Forum. |

The only issue in my mind was the flimsy nature of the end of the retaining cable and what would happen if it failed, flinging the tire into traffic. Failure of those clamps have been reported although usually from being damaged.
See this thread where I posted photos of a good and attractive solution that also address theft. Cheap insurance.

| Thanks to all above for excellent info. Norcalchuck, I wll incorporate the master python cable when I get a full-size. Any further info on cheap rims appreciated. |

| Is the weight hanging on the cable really greater with a full size spare? Isn't the tension on the cable limited to the capacity of the ratchet assembly? For example if we had a 500 lb spare it wouldn't get lifted from the ground, the ratchet would just click. If the ratchet clicks at say 100 foot/lbs wouldn't that be the maximum lifting capacity regardless of the weight of the tire. Am I out to lunch? |

Well, frankly I have the same concern with the spacesaver spare. There is no redundancy behind that little clamp on the winch cable, and they have failed as that camp can get damaged. I have not weighed both wheel/tire combos, but the full size spare is probably about 45-50 lbs. The spacesaver is probably around 20-25. I am satisfied now with the addition of the cable lock assembly shown in the pictures in the thread referenced above in this thread, that if the clamp on the cable winch should fail, at least there will not be potentially catastrophic result from that wheel assembly being layed down on the interstate. The issue is not the lifting capacity of the cable, it is the manner in which Honda has engineered the attachment of the retaining mechanism to that cable. And as an aside, the fix also addresses theft issues. |

Good points. I've seen the cables at Walmart and I'm planning on picking one up. |

| This is a question for folks w/ full size spares. What did you guys do with the small "doughnut" spare tire/wheel after you got the FSS? I just got a great deal on a rim & tire combo from a dealer on Ebay and I kinda hate to throw away the old spare, but I can't imagine anybody would want it. :8: |
|
|
| frostyra |
| FWIW, I hid it under the back porch. When I sell the X in 8-10 years, I can sell the FSS on this board and let the new owner have the donut. |

I too couldn't think of a way to "dispose" of my old donut (from the '01) economically (I am too cheap to just throw it away); so it sat in my garage for three years. When we traded the '01 for the '04 in January the dealer said the FSS was useless to him and that if I had the old donut to just put it back on. So the FSS on my '04 is the one from the '01 (matching rims are not a big deal when it is a Full-Time Spare; not in a 5-tire rotation).
So if you ever plan on trading your X for another one - keep the donut. :1: See Maik's post above. |
