I know it has Bose speakers, but who makes the head unit? I just ordered a new '03 MDX with a touring package and navigation. At some point I'll want to add XM Radio and possibly an MP3 player to the system. Is it doable? I'm pretty good with electronics, and I was wondering if anyone else has done something similar.

Thanks in advance,

Not absolutely positive, but probably Alpine. Be sure to buy the factory Electrical Troubleshooting Manual (at least, and maybe the Service Manual) from www.helminc.com ; it'll give you wiring colors and locations.

I have an 01 MDX and had the head unit changed for an Eclipse. Pioneer is the maker of the 01 Bose system and it is a POS. Anyone want to purchase it from me?

I have totally removed my Bose system (speakers, head unit and amps)...so you can rely on the following information. In my 2003 MDX (Touring, no navigation), Pioneer supplied the CD/Tape player/Tuner; Alpine supplied the video screen (remember, my screen is a non-navigation screen...it's probably different from the navigation capable screen, but I'd be surprised if it was supplied to Acura by a company other than Alpine). The amps are branded Bose...I actually opened one up, and boy, is it full of cheap electronics.

Thanks. I'll probably replace the entire system myself at some point. I'm not at all surprised that the electronics are cheap. My other car is a 1999 Mazda Miata 10th Anniversary edition. It was the second Miata I've owned (the first being a '93, which I sold when I "upgraded"). It came with a "Bose Entertainment System," which was a total POS.

I replaced it with an Alpine head unit, Boston Acoustics speakers and a Precision Power amp. I had to do it all at once, since the speakers original speakers were only comaptible with the factory head unit. I guess the same will be true when I get my X.

Hmmm, now I know what to ask for for Christmas

I also took out my bose system. The thing i miss most about it thou is the steering wheel controls. MB Quarts sound much better thou. I also got a in-dash works great. Who all has customized their stereos? Did ya'll have your trim kit custom made?

I wonder how hard it would be to hook the steering wheel controls up to a replacement system.

I agree with your evaluation of the 01 system. I've never been a Bose fan for home audio, and this car system is a great example of their style - rumbling bass coming from somewhere that is supposed to impress people with the system's power. So much rumble and distortion that I just turn it off. The stock system in the 93 Camry that I'm selling sounds much, much, better.
I'm hoping that I can improve the X stereo with some speaker changes and avoid changing the head unit.

I ordered a "plood" piece from exoticwooddash.com It is an exact piece that fits where the radio used to be. You just have to cut a hole for the new head unit. It looks awsome. Others have used ABS plastic and had it dyed to match or any other sort of options. I was actually looking at having a piece of ABS plastic wrapped with leather to match the interior color and mounting the radio that way. Be unique and use your imagination.
