Reason of why MDX doesn't have HID - Click HERE for Original Thread

Hello everybody,

Some of you may already know why MDX doesn't have HID just like other Acura cars. But I just found out by reading FAQ at Honda Japan web site. (I lived in Japan for 12 years, so I can speak fluent Japanese)

According to the FAQ on Honda MDX page, the location of the head lights are higher than average cars and HID could blind the other drivers.

What do you think of this? I still think they should have added HID.

BTW, I see many people here have HID in they MDX. Could you please let me know I could buy it?

Thank you

This has been discussed before. Basically, that reason is an excuse, and not a valid one at all.

Here are a few other higher-than-average cars that do have HID.

BMW X5
Lexus GX470
Lexus RX330
Mercedes-Benz ML350/ML500/ML55
Volkswagen Touareg
Volvo XC90

It's just an excuse, and a bad one. It also covers up the basic fact that Honda/Acura HID technology is weak. Other manufacturers have projector-beam xenons (for more precise focus and less glare than reflector-based xenons), auto-levelling systems, and headlamp washers (dirt/mud on xenons makes the glare much worse). Not to mention that most of the European vehicles have bi-xenons, not just low-beam xenons.

To put it in less-than-glowing terms, the reason Honda/Acura doesn't have HID's in their SUV's is that their backwards xenon technology may cause blinding. And that Honda/Acura won't have HID's in the MDX until they catch up with their competitors. That's the real reason.

.....I think the GX 470 does not have HIDs either, but I totally agree with you that it's just a bad excuse to cover up Acura's lagging xenon technology and the fact that they do not want to spend the bucks to have some sort of self levelling device :28:

Yeah that is a sad excuse given to me by salesman as well. Gawd. I mean come on xenon lights have been out for 10-11 years now on prodcution cars. Just after the Gulf War in fact, you could start seeing them on Bimmers and stuff.

Well said!

I apologize for the faulty assumption. But if true, why in the world would Lexus not put xenons on a $50k vehicle?

No room behind the light housing to hold the Xenon housing and auto-leveling housing. That is why there is no HIDs.

MDX on the hand has plenty of room behind their light housing. ACURA- CHEAP BASTARDS!

They have HIDs on the TL, CL, and I think RL. Maybe thats what Acura thinks as the excuse that they actually believe; if the height is the problem, they should add HIDs as an option then! I noticed the height of the headlights are high but it's still a lame excuse..

i personally dont SUVs with HID especially when i was in civic.
even in MDX, the HID from Range Rover behind was bugging me alot through the side mirror. i hope those other SUV manufacturers also come up with the same excuse as Acura and drop HID.

Hi TheXman:

___Bi-Xenon’s w/ level control are an option on the XC90 …

___As for their uses, once you have them, they really brighten up the way. If I were to go all out, I would install them as brights as well. If they cause discomfort from behind, at least its only short term.

___Good Luck

Volvo was late with the bi-xenons. They weren't available immediately. But they are now. And they're bi-xenon projectors with auto-levelling.

You have to buy them in conjunction with the Climate Package, but after that it only adds $500 to the list price of the vehicle. Not bad at all.

...DOT certification is required, and to receive this mfgs have to go through extensive testing and my guess is Acura is just trying to save a few $$ or delay until competition forces. With all the competition having HID's I'd expect to see them on 04 models, which would include new housings.

Could also be that testing is or has been under way but wasn't completed in time for 03 production. With the number of complaints the DOT is receiving on HID's, I'm sure the testing is becoming rougher and taking much more time.

My .02.
