Finally wanting to throw my Comcast cable box out the window...
Anyone have any stories about DISH or DirectTV that I should know before choosing one of them???
Just got off the phone with DISH and their package (Top 150 plus local, plus 2nd box) is 59 bucks - the same as my current cable. I was suprised - I've always "heard" satellite was a little less???
Thanks in advance! |

I love my DISH. If you're interested I can send you a free gift card. You'll get two free receivers, free installation, and $50 bucks off your first months bill.
Just email me at zubinh@aol.com |

Just be sure to get a PVR, TiVo if you go with DirectTV is MUCH better than the DishPVR but it is still a lot better than a VCR.
There is no way for me to describe how this will change your life, I can only promise that you won't be sorry you made the decision to get it. |

| I hear you loud and clear on that advice. I've had ReplayTV for the last 2 years - completely hooked! Now I wonder if I can set up the DISH with my pre-existing ReplayTV? |

Replay TV won't work with Dish. You will need to get the Dish PVR508. |

That is not accurate....
ReplayTV and a Standalone TiVo will work with Dish, DirectTV, Cable, Antenna, nearly any source, they change channels on the receiver using an IR blaster.
However the DirectTV receiver with integrated TiVo and the DishPVR have an advantage in that they can record the actual bit stream. The advantage here is best quality video with no change in quality from the original stream while using the amount of space equivalent to the standalone pvr in basic or extended play mode. The disadvantage of these units is you can not record from an analog source or antenna/cable input.
I have Dish Service, a DishPVR, TiVo Series 1 and 2, and a Replay 5040.
I highly recommend that anyone going to DirectTV get a receiver with TiVo. Not only do you get the high quality recordings but it can record 2 channels at the same time.
If you get Dish, the DishPVR is good to have for movies, PPV, and sports but it just isn't as flexible as Replay or TiVo for daily use. If you have never had a PVR you would probably be happy with it, if you have Replay or TiVo you will be very disappointed. That being said if you get Dish, try to get one for free, that is what I did.
For standalone units there are positives and negatives on both TiVo and Replay, I have no specific recommendation for a general audience. |

| I think DIRECTV is the way to go because of two words......Sunday Ticket. |

I have the Hughes HDVR2 DirecTivo, and I love it.
I really has changed the way my wife and I watch TV.
Is the show live, or is it a recorded show? "Who cares" is always
the answer. You watch what you want, when you want, and you can push through all the commericials. Need to pause for any reason at all?? Just do it, and come back and continue from where you left off, or simply rewind to remind yourself of where you are in the show(or game)...
Clearly a step above simple live TV. |

We have Direct TV with Tivo. I have no idea as to how we survived before TIVO! It is totally awesome. Record any program, anytime and watch at your convenience, cutting out any commercials. We subscribe to the Platnum service, so on Saturdays we get as many as 25 college football games! And thats without the ESPN Gameday! Just all the various sportschannels around the country.
TIVO has truly changed the way my wife and I watch TV. I would not simply recommend it, but I would classify it as a MUST HAVE!
We also have a DVD recorder that is fed by the Direct TV receiver which allows us to record programs, movies or sporting events onto a DVD-R as well. The quality of the recordings is excellent, and with the hard drive on the TIVO, I can record the event on TIVO and later put it on a DVD. It is a wonderful combination that I have enjoyed immensely. |

| I had DISH and dropped it when the DISH - Hughes merger fell through; I was holding on hoping for the merger and future ability to see NFL Direct on DISH. I always thought DISH was better than Direct TV overall for content and number of channels. However, it is cheaper to go with cable, especially in Vegas. Cox Cable quite possibly is the most customer oriented cable company in the U.S., especially cable modem tech support. I pay around $80 month for digital cable with HBO, Showtime, TMC, StarZ, etc.; $39.99 for PC cable modem, and $24.95 for TV Japan for the spouse. I have 5 TV sets, so it would cost me more with DISH for a separate receiver for each set plus local broadcast station costs per month, plus HBO, etc. Cox also offers HDTV channels at a modest additional cost, I believe they have more channels than satellite. Anyway, at this point in time, I think cable is a better deal. |
