Lifetime subscription to Sirius for $400, equivalent to about 2.5 years of monthly sub.

This plan will be offered from August 15, 2003 through January 31, 2004. The only payment option is upfront in full. Each receiver will be $399.99. The Lifetime subscription is tied to the receiver and not the customer. It accompanies the product in case of ownership transfer.
The new owner is required to register the transfer and pay a regular activation fee of $15. The Lifetime plan is available to individual subscribers only (not businesses or for resale) and is available on all products. The subscription remains in effect if your receiver needs to be repaired or replaced due to malfunction while the receiver is still under warranty (proof of warranty will need to be faxed to Customer Care). The same applies if the unit is stolen except the customer will need to fax in a copy of the police report.

Suggestions for choice of receiver?

How much would you pay for a lifetime subscription of Iridium satphone service or to an RCA Videodisk club?

"Lifetime" is a relative term (i.e., describing the product's, not yours!)

I am not concerned since the imbedded base is over 100,000 subscribers, manufacturing partners include Kenwood, Panasonic, Clarion and Audiovox, retail locations include Circuit City, Best Buy, Car Toys, Good Guys, Tweeter, Ultimate Electronics, Sears and Crutchfield, and Sirius has partnerships with DaimlerChrysler, Ford and BMW the receivers are currently being offered in BMW, MINI, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep®, Nissan, Infiniti and Mazda, with plans announced by Ford, Lincoln, Mercury, Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar, Volvo, Audi, Volkswagen, Land Rover and Aston Martin.

Sure anything could happen, perhaps some solar storm wipes out the satellites and they don't have enough money to relaunch.

But I am confident enough that even if the current owners of Sirius run into financial difficulty the service will remain available and the investment in a lifetime sub will not be lost. After all, you break even after just 2.5 years.
