I was just wondering what kind of computers you all have.
I have a custom built P4 3.06 ghz with a Radeon 9500. |

| I have both Intel and Mac, but I voted Mac since I could only select one. |

| You should change you poll, when you mean computer you should have said PC or MAC, you are refering to CPU, which are AMD, INTEL and (different Manufatures) MAC CPUs. |

| My computer is a Toshiba laptop (intel) that we use as our second computer and take on trips for downloading photo's and watching DVD's. |

| How about adding custom or other on the list? My computer are those custom built ones (2.4 GHz, Oh yeah!). |

Hi Ace3:
___I have a personal built 1.4 GHz Celeron at 1.5 GHz on a Tualatin based Soyo TISU and a Radeon 9500. Custom T&R’s ala PowerStrip as well as an M-Audio card for extremely clean 44.1 KHz MP3/CD-Audio playback as well as “good as it gets - DD/DTS”. TheaterTek as the player of choice but no DirectShow post processing filters however. The second HTPC is the same with a GeForce 4 for my sons gaming needs. The Third is a 1.6 GHz P4 running at 2.4 GHz w/ the S/PDIF output from an Asus P4S533X. The fourth is a 1.3 GHz at 1.5 GHz Tualatin on an Asus TUSL2 … At just 60 - 70W in total (entire HTPC, not just the chip), the Tualatin’s rip up on the P4’s all the way up to 2.4 – 2.5 GHz. Most bang for the buck anyway. Not only do the Tualatin’s save power, (just 34 W chips vs. an 81 W 3.06 P4 or the 60W P4B at 2.4) but their processing of Cancer conformers clearly beat the P4’s on a MHz to MHz race to death. Well, a 3.06 will finally take the cake but at a huge waste and expense.

Here's my dinosaur that I've had for several months.
• CPU: 3.06 Intel P4, Hyperthread technology (parallel processing, acts like dual processors)
• RAM: 2 GB Kingston 400Mhz HyperX DDR running in Dual Channel mode
• Mobo: MSI 655 HT Max mobo. 533 MHz FSB
• VID: ATI Radeon 9700, AGP 8X
• Ports: 6 USB 2.0, 2 IEEE 1394 (Firewire)
• HDs: 40GB boot, 200GB data on dual UDMA133 IDE controllers
• Serial ATA-RAID (currently unpopulated)
• Gigabit LAN (1000mbps capacity running over 3Gbps fractional T3. WHOOP-DE-FRIGGIN-DOO)
• TDK VeloCD 48/16/48 CDburner (fast RIPs)
• Pioneer A05 4X DVDburner (movies anyone?)
All housed in a clear lexan case with neon accents, glow-in-the-dark cables, blacklight, and clear fans with LEDs that blink with HD activity.
I'd say it's about time for an 800Mhz FSB system.:2: |

Hi All:
___ I forgot to mention that the Celeron based HTPC’s and P4 are literally silent. All include 80 GB SeaGate Barracuda ATA IV’s, an Alpha PAL 8942 w/ a Panaflow L1 on the P4 and SVC GoldenGate all copper CPU HS’s w/ 60 to 80 mm funnels and Panaflow L1’s on the Tualatin’s. For the PSU’s, 330 W Antec True Powers all the way around. Case fans include Sunon TB-4’s modded for 7-Volt ops as well as Panaflows. All video card fans were removed and replaced w/ fanless Zalman Copper sinks … For OTA HDTV recording and viewing, a MyHD card was used in the main HTPC.

Just a run of the mill system:
1. Gateway 486 pentium 4 - 1.3 GHz Performance system
2. 40 GB Hard-drive
3. 386 RAM
4. 18.1" Flat panel for viewing pic's
5. Windows XP operating system
6. HP Deskjet 952C printer
7. 32MB ATI Video Card
I had recently upgraded the Ram from 128 RAM to 384 RAM and what a difference!!!
Next I have to upgrade my video card to get clearer streaming video's on the Flat Panel Monitor.
Next computer will be a Dell for sure, not that happy with Gateway.
Hey DUDE, gotta get a DELL!!!! |

Isnt gigabit kind of useless now if its in a pci card, isnt the bus of PCi only like 133 MB's. The best gigabit ethernet would be in the new intel 875p boards and 865 (800 fsb ones) And in server motherboards with PCI-X i cant wait until PCI Express comes out, PCI is finally gettting an upgrade. |

PII 300, Win98SE. Anyone think I should do my part for the tech economy and upgrade sometime?
Just added a $29 30gb HD from Staples earlier this week as storage for photos, and I'll install a cheapo CD-RW sometime soon. That'll be about all it can handle. |

Just a quick question for any computer experts, I have a 32mb ATI video card with a 18.1 flat panel monitor. Considering to upgrade my video card? What will it do for my images on the screen? Will streaming be much clearer if I blow up to full size? Advantages? Worth the cost? How much to increase 64mb or higher? Thanks for any input that you give.

I am no gaming expert Paul, but your display has a fixed maximum resolution property.
But a hotter card should give you better resolution within that limit as the games will have faster resovling rates (frames).
It's hard to say how much improvement you will see, but doubling to 64 should be noticeable. Going to 128mb might bring out the best of the best games. Whether the resolution of your particular display is good enough to see that, is hard to say.
The ATI 9000 series seem to be the best cards now. |

My friend and I are thinking about buying a QPower Water-cooling Case and running some hydrofluoroether through it. 3M sells it for $220 per gallon. If I replace the regular pastic tubes with some brass ones, I think it would work. Only problem is how to keep the condensation from building up on the vital components. |

If you are a gamer it would definately be benificial to buy a better video card. You have to remember though...........that LCD monitor is limited by it's native resoultion. So eventhough your new videocard might be pumping out a butt-load of framerates, you are limited by the LCD's refresh rate and native resolution. If your not a gamer I wouldn't suggest buying another videocard. It's not worth it. I totally regret buying my LCD because I prefer looking at my monitors at atleast 1600x1200. |
