short drive in pismo beach dunes - Click HERE for Original Thread

Mocking-DX
just came from pismo beach, CA today
$4 got me in, drove about 2 miles by the beach to the end zone
where the dunes starts.

i saw lot of ATVs and jeep wranglers and some Hummer ride tours
the X took the beachshore sand like nothing

took me a while to brave and start driving to the dunes.
did not air down the tires coz i did not plan dune-driving that much coz i still have to head north to HEarst castle in San Simeon

put the X in Drive 2 and VTM,went up to the first long soft uphill sand dune the drive was like 10-15mph but the ride was smooth.

the X had some difficulty in really soft sand about 6" where previous deep tire tracks are, especially when turning. BUt going downhill is without trouble.
did some driving around the first sand dune just to get the feel. But unfortunately i did not feel like getting stuck nor feel like getting help for getting stuck today so i turned around and drove back to the beach shore and head to San simeon.

Unfortunately, i noticed the X was pulling to the left. Went to gas station, heard a hissing sound from the left front tire. My dismay, a broken utility knife blade buried intO my michelin. got it fixed at the gas station by putting 2 tire plugs to seal it.Then went on to hearst caslte. Unfortunately we didn't make it to the last tour for the day.
GUess we're going back to the area soon.

ANYBODY WANT OT MEET UP IN PISMO BEACH IN ABOUT 2-4 WEEKS?

sand dunes
we were on top of the first sand dune here
did not want to go down to take picture of the X coz these ATVs are flying from every where

we were gonna just ride the hummer tours but the only availabel time was late 4:30 PM

Tried to rent ATVs but they require closed-toe shoes. Of course we were wearing sandals!

Very nice Mocking-DX:29:

another picture.

i'll take more next time.
maybe if we were 2 or more Xs we could snap each others pics

thanks guys
it was really fun

i would recommend driving with another 4 wheeler if anybody wants to go farther just in case 1 gets stuck

The park does have a H1 Hummer beach patrol just in case. JUst dial 911 and tell the operator you're in the dunes and i guess they'll come and pull you out

BTW, could you tell me exactly how to get there. I've lived in the L.A. area for almost 8 years now and haven't a clue  ........I really want to go there and do some beach and dune driving!!

Hope you're enjoying your vacation in California! :)

You just take the 405 N, to the 101 N (they join at Sherman Oaks in the San Fernando Valley) drive North forever, Pismo is 12 miles south of SLO. Just follow the signs. Have a great drive.
I used to lead Boy Scouts all over those dunes. Remember the best weather there doesn't start till mid-October. Make sure you eat at the Splash Cafe-best Chowder and Fish n' Chips. If you want a real local flavor dining experience, you have to go to McClintock's for Sunday Brunch.
Man I miss the Central Coast.

Ditto on the Splash Cafe. But be sure to get there before the lunch cowd. I have seen the line out the door and around the side of the building.

I've been there with my friend's ATVs about 3 years ago.

We had a good time and I ate a lot of sand (Even w/that strange

looking helmet on it)!!!

Anyways, I had Nissan Altima at that time so I didn't even dreamed

about enjoying those sand w/my car. But now....

Okay, I got a 4X4 SUV but...I am too scare to use my X.

All those scratches.....etc. :(

Well....so I am just dreaming again...

If I get brave, I will do. I know some other place to enjoy off road

ride but just too scare...

another ditto for the splash cafe... the lines may be long but they serve fast. the hangup is trying to find a place to sit!

if you go up the coast and you like good old fashioned breakfasts in massive quantities, try margie's diner. there's one in SLO right off Los Osos Valley Road, another in Paso Robles, and another in Salinas.

for a really nice breakfast of normal proportions, my favorite is Summer's Cafe in Shell Beach on Shell Beach Road. It used to be called the Shell Beach Cafe.

good luck!

LOVR- the cyclist's wind tunnel. There is also a Margie's Diner in Morro Bay at Hiway 1 and Hiway 41, a lot closer to Pismo than Salinas and Paso, but nice to know they are there too when on a road trip. While In SLO, check out The Upper Crust on Foothill Blvd. for Gourmet Pizzas at their best, better than California Pizza Kitchen.
Then there is always the Farmer's Market every Thursday night for the BBQ Ribs competition. Yum, I'm hungry already.

i actually looked it up in the Navigation.
just search PIsmo beach in park and recreation, if i remember it right.
Pismo beach is a city itself. At frist i put my destination to PIsmo beach camp park, but it's just beside it
there were actually 2 entrance. We went in by grand street. I went there using 101, about 90 miles from santa barbara

thanks
i was lucky though that the tire held up till we got out of the sand. Luckily, we got out of the dunes before the tire went completely flat

will definitely drop by pismo again when we go to san simeon the see hearst castle. Man that place looks huge.

we'll definitely try those recommended restaurants coz I love clam chowders too.
