I have a fairly new home I built a couple of years ago. Garage floor is SUPER clean. This past weekend I notice ONE oil spot from the REAR area of my 2003 MDX. So I backed the X right back in that same spot and noticed where it is coming from.........The rod that holds the spare tire has a one drop a week senario. I even felt the oil from under the vehicle.
Question: Should I bring this up to my dealer or can you guys shed the same situation ? |

Wow, this is really wierd. Just this weekend the Mrs told me when she was sweeping in the garage that there was a single oil spot near where the back of the X would normally sit. She'd wiped it up already, so I really didn't get a change to look at where it was exactly. I'll have to go out there and take a look at it tonight.

| That is EXACTLY what I was doing and noticed this small spot of dark motor like oil........I leaned over and dipped my finger in it and smelled it. No smell.....so I thought and thought.......finally I backed the X in and BINGO ! So I looked up at the bottom of the X and sure enough there it was......at the end of this "rod" that holds the spare tire was ANOTHER drip coming.........I wonder if this is normal ? I hate to drive my X all the way to the MORON shop to be told...............Our Technican says this is "normal".................:3: :3: :3: |

Must be normal. I couldn't stand waiting after reading this and just took a look. Sure enough, there was another big blob just waiting to fall off ... right where you said it would be. Maybe dropping the wheel and wiping the excess off the cable would stop or delay the next drip. Don't know if the oil is there for lubrication, or rust prevention.

EDIT: Knowing what to search for, found a thread HERE all about it. |

I think both. Its no big deal. Like we said a couple of years ago, just lower the cable and wipe it off gently with a rag (not a paper towel). Don't try to remove ALL the grease, just enough so that you don't get the Chinese water torture effect. Without it, the cable would scrape and bind in the windup mechanism, and as with any unprotected steel, the cable would eventually rust out. Just imagine the liability issue if the spare fell off and caused a 54-vehicle pile up with multiple casualties. I few drops of grease on the floor on a hot day is worth the safety prevention it provides. |
