Hey, I've been noticing that my 2002 MDX's front A/C isn't as cold anymore. I've noticed more than a month ago; I've had maintenance and everything but it's still the same. I usually have it around 74degrees and that WAS pretty cold. Now 74 feels almost like 85+. I was thinking maybe the car should warm up? but its been like that even after driving for more than 30mins. I have A/C ON, meaning its not on A/C OFF; obviously.
The A/C used to be the best(on a scale of 1-10; a 10)! Now it's more like a 6!!
Has anyone else experienced this?
What should I do? What should I check? |

| As the temp. outside starts to prepare for Fall/winter, your A/C will notice this and the same settings during the summer may not put out the same as the temp. changes. So as it gets colder out, 74 setting may put out "warmer" air, just adjust the temp. down and it should do fine. When you know you have a problem, is when you set it to 60 and it blows out warm air.....then you have a problem.....does this make sense ? :1: |

Correct! 60 degrees is the equivalent to "Manual full-on A/C", and you should feel VERY cold air from the vents within a couple of minutes. BTW, I'm one of the few on this board who thinks that the X's A/C temp control is lousy; I'd much rather have it just a manual setting than automatic -- but I like the air blowing on my face, and the constant variations drive me nuts! |

Eh? What's so lousy? One button press and I'm on the A/C main screen. I choose the fan speed with a touch of a finger on the screen, and same goes for the vents choice and whether I want compressor on or off. Then I just press up or down on the blue or red buttons at the top of the dash to manually choose temp.
As for cars today having "60" farenheit meaning "max cool" it's kinda stupid if you ask me. The air temp blowing out the vents at 60 setting is MUCH colder than 60 degrees! Who's the genius that came up with it may I ask...and it's industry-wide too... |

The temperature of the air coming out of the vents should always be the same when the A/C is on. Getting a car to cool off inside from 90 to 72 doesn't happen any faster by putting it on 60, right?
Now, cranking the fan up to 5 bars will speed things up, but you can't hear yourself think at that point. |

The temperature of the air coming out of the vents (supply) is directly related to the temperature of the air crossing the evaporator coil (return). Most A/C systems are designed with what is known as a 40 degree coil. That means under some certain set of ideal conditions, the coil will operate at 40 degrees F. This is due to the vapor pressure of the refrigerant, and you can't do anything to change it. If you introduce 110 degree air (return) to the coil, it will drop the temperature by about 20 - 25 degrees, so the air will feel cooler, but not cold. As the air in the cabin cools, the coil is able to cool the air further, down to a theoretical 40 degrees F. Setting a temperature on the thermostat does not control the temperature of air coming out of the vents (supply). It simply will signal the compressor to shut off, to maintain an ambient temp. of whatever is set. |

Dear catzx6:
Excellent post, but IMHO here are a few observations:
When the A/C is put in "auto" mode, the compressor cycles on and off.
Once the temperature set is arrived at, the compressor may stay on or cycle on and off, depending on the outside temperature - the cooler it is out, the more frequent the cycling off.
To maintain constant inside temperature inside, in addition to cycling on and off, warm air may be introduced into the system.
I prefer the "auto" mode - we paid extra for it so I like to use it.
My wife prefers the "manual" mode where she sets the fan speed and where the air is directed.
So the MDX gives you two optons. Enjoy them!

Correct, the air leaving the vents is not always the same temperature, it's a blend of conditioned and warm air depending on requirements. |

That's correct, two modes. But neither is really manual, where you can control the temp of the air coming out of the vents (like you can on many older cars with a slide lever or simple knob, or as you can in the rear seat of the MDX when the "RR A/C" switch is set to manual). Both modes are automatic, in that the inside air temp is measured just inside the little grille in the dashboard just in front of the driver's right knee; all of the adjustments are designed to keep that one spot at the temperature you choose with the temp up/down buttons.
I suspect that those who don't like air blowing on their faces would prefer either of the two modes that the X now has; I also suspect that those of us who like the air blowing "in our face" would prefer to be able to set the temp of the air coming out of the vents, regardless of what the temp sensor behind that little grille is seeing.
But back to the original question: KingBmdxFLIP22, does it cool quickly enough if you set the adjustment to 60 degrees? If it does, the system is probably OK; if not, it needs to be whupped into shape. |

Don't get too technical.
Had the same problem with my 03 a few months after delivery. Over the phone, my dealer said they were having problems with some leaking seals. They replaced a seal, recharged the system and I've had to keep the setting up at 74 to keep my MDX from getting too cold in Florida, during the summer!
Hope this helps,
