Took a drive to the coast yesterday. Fall provides some great scenery. The whales will be running in about 6 more weeks and can be viewed from the cliffs.

As an aside, I finally settled on the Sony DCS-F717 Digital Camera and am finding it to be a superb performer. Great optics.

Hi Norcalchuck:

___That is a beautiful photo irregardless if it had an X in it or not. The next time I am out in California, I will definitely have to drive that route? Is that along Hwy 1 somewhere then? Sorry as I am not too familiar with the area. I have been in San Fran 3 times in the last 3 years and LA about 7 or so ago ...

___What a beautiful over look you had the opportunity to view.

___Good Luck

The location was at Bodega Head which is adjacent to Bodega Bay on the Sonoma County coast. Accessed via Highway 1. About 4 miles west off the highway. Bodega Head is now a state recreation area, but interestingly, a number of years ago it was to be the site for a PG&E (Pacific Gas & Electric) nuclear power plant but that got quashed.

Driving up from San Francisco city/county, you go North through Marin County, and Sonoma is the next county up. Santa Rosa is about 55 miles from the Golden Gate Bridge. You can head west to Highway 1 at several places.

The usual "tour" route I take visitors on is Highway 116 (River Road) west, following the Russian River, with a stop at Korbel Vineyards for some champagne tasting, North about 2 miles at the coast to Jenner, then 11 miles north on the coast to Fort Ross State Historical area--occupied by the Russians in the early 1800s to facilitate their activities in Alaska. Then south down Highway 1 for about 20 miles to Bodega Bay, then out to Bodega Head, with great views of the rugged California coast. Some very popular abalone harvesting areas along the way at the various State and County Park beaches (hmm--wonder if it's called "harvesting"--can't be "fishing since it's not fish).

Yes its called harvesting. When I was the Morro Bay City Manager we had an Abalone Farmer on one of the City's land/water lease sites. His Mariculture operation had mating abalone in tubs (man, those suckers could fairly stick to each other) and miniscule abalone in many tubs, they were so small you could barely see them. When they grew to about thumbnail size they were moved to tanks in the aquaculture enclosure. They take about 5 years to grow to market size.
Excellent pic of our coast.

Did the same trip in our X the week before. Did the redwood tree hike first and then went over to bodega head for the sunset. the navi had the roads mapped but not the real road names :-)

Beautiful!!

Reminds me that our family needs to get over to the left coast more often. Must admit, the first time we saw the Pacific, it seemed weird with the ocean on the "other side"!! You're lucky to live in such a beautiful state!

I think I know who you're referring to. Years ago, the son of the owner of the company I work for was working in that area for an abalone farmer. He got married in Morro Bay and his boss provided free abalone at his reception as a wedding gift. Don't know what happened to the abalone operation there, but the guy I know now lives in Chile and has his own abalone farm. He's been there for over 10 years.

Yup. I think we're talking about the same one. Small world.
