Backfire ignites dog, dog ignites grass
CULDESAC, Idaho (AP) — This dog was having a bad fur day. The dog, whose coat caught fire when the owner's vehicle backfired, ignited a grass fire just off U.S. Highway 95. Firefighters doused the grass fire and reported the dog was unhurt, only smelling of burnt hair.
"I have been in firefighting for many years, but I have never seen anything like this happen," Culdesac Fire Chief Gary Gilliam said.
It happened Saturday when a motorist who ran out of fuel put gas in the tank and then primed the carburetor. On restarting, the van backfired, throwing sparks into the cab and igniting the dog's fur.
A passenger let the dog out, and it rolled in dry grass, putting out the flames on its coat but setting the grass afire. |

This is true! My niece works for the forest service and received this one day in her updates:
California was having one of their many forest fires. After putting the fire out and going back and checking for hot spots, they came across a burnt body that had been in scuba gear. They pondered on how this came about. After many thoughts they realized that when using the bucket from the helicopter to pick up water from the ocean, they had picked up this scuba diver in the bucket. Of course not knowing he was picked up, he was tragically dumped on the fire with the water in the bucket. Awful and true. (can you imagine what he must have been thinking before he so tragically was going to his demise?) :( :13: |

EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. -- Trying to get his 50 cents back from a pay phone has proved plenty painful for a man in Illinois.
Emanuel Fleming got his finger stuck in the coin return slot Tuesday for three hours.
After people at the scene couldn't get him loose, paramedics cut the phone off at the base and took both Fleming and the phone to the emergency room.
Doctors gave the elementary school janitor a painkiller -- and then used a wooden device and lubricant to get his finger out.
Fleming said the phone was near a busy bus stop in East St. Louis. He said people who know him laughed at him as they rode by. |

Not humorous, but a very strange story:
LETHBRIDGE, Alta. (CP) _ A man was crushed to death Tuesday when he dived under a slow-moving semi-trailer to retrieve his baseball cap.
High winds had blown the hat off the man's head as he got out of his white convertible in the parking lot of a farm supply store. The wind carried the well-worn hat underneath a loaded semi-trailer just as it started to move.
"The truck was rolling forward and he dove under to grab the hat. He tried to grab it and wiggle out quickly,'' said witness Josh Emard.
Emard said he wondered at first if what he was seeing might be a stunt.
"It was just unbelievable that someone would go under a moving semi for a hat.''
Derek Keenan, 44, of Lethbridge died at the scene after the truck's rear wheels rolled over his upper body. The truck came to a stop with Keenan underneath the flatbed trailer loaded with precast concrete drainage pipe.
The 40-year-old truck driver, looking visibly shaken, was helped into an ambulance and taken to hospital.
Lethbridge police Sgt. Tom Ascroft said no charges will be laid.
"A very odd set of circumstances led to a very tragic accident,'' he said.

They forgot to mention what happened to the hat. I sure hope that the truck didn't drive over the hat and get it dirty. :32: |

Police: Man chokes to death trying to hide bag of pot in mouth
(11-20) 07:20 PST FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) --
A man changing a flat tire choked to death on a bag of marijuana he had stuffed down his throat in an apparent attempt to hide it from police who stopped to help him, authorities said.
Nickolas Sandoval, 24, died Wednesday.
Officers were unaware at first Sandoval had drugs when they spotted him on the highway in Corinth, about 45 miles northeast of Fort Worth, said Corinth police Cpl. Frank Lott.
"Officers went from 'Oh, hey, here is someone with a flat tire' to 'Hey, this guy is choking,"' Lott told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
Sandoval, of Ponder, was pronounced dead at a hospital. Cause of death: "asphyxiation due to aspiration of plastic bag," according to a spokeswoman for the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office.
Sandoval was convicted at least three times of marijuana possession, and pleaded guilty two years ago to a drunken-driving charge.

HANOI (Reuters) - Vietnamese drug addicts kidnapped a mute teenager, bundled him in a sack and sold him to a dog-meat eatery as a stray canine, state media said on Saturday.
The Gia Dinh Xa Hoi (Family and Society) newspaper said the two addicts grabbed the homeless 13-year-old from a busy market in Halong city.
Halong, around 90 miles from the capital, Hanoi, attracts hordes of tourists to its spectacular bay and rock formations, a United Nations heritage site.
The kidnappers tied up the boy, bundled him into a sack and sold him to the restaurant for $19, the newspaper said.
The restaurateur, shocked to find the boy, fed him and released him.
Police were investigating the case but had made no arrests, said the newspaper, mouthpiece of the state Population, Family and Children Committee.
Dog meat is a delicacy in parts of China and in some other Asian countries such as Korea, Cambodia, Indonesia and Laos. In Vietnam, eating specifically farmed breeds is believed to bring health benefits and is seen as auspicious.
Early in November, Thai police rescued more than 800 dogs from smugglers who were taking the animals to Vietnam to sell for meat.

(23 December 1991, Florida) This account of an aircraft accident is quoted directly from the National Transportation Safety Board report, with comments added in parentheses for clarity.
Aircraft: PIPER PA-34-200T, Registration: N47506
Injuries: 2 Fatal.
The private pilot and a pilot rated passenger [two pilots] were going to practice simulated instrument flight. Witnesses observed the airplane's right wing fail in a dive and crash. Examination of the wreckage and bodies revealed that both occupants were partially clothed and the front right seat was in the full aft reclining position. [The pilots had converted the co-pilot seat to a bed.] Neither body showed evidence of seatbelts or shoulder harnesses being worn. [They were lying on the bed.] Examination of the individuals' clothing revealed no evidence of ripping or distress to the zippers and belts. [Their lack of clothing seemed to be voluntary.]
The National Transportation Safety Board determines the probable cause(s) of this accident as follows:
The pilot in command's improper in-flight decision to divert her attention to other activities not related to the conduct of the flight. [The pilot and co-pilot were having sex, and nobody was flying the plane.] Contributing to the accident was the exceeding of the design limits of the airplane leading to a wing failure. [The lack of a pilot caused the plane to fly erratically, over-stressing the wing and leading to a crash.]

KASSEL, Germany (AP) — A computer expert accused of killing, dismembering and eating another man who allegedly agreed to the arrangement over the Internet went on trial for murder Wednesday at a court in central Germany.
Prosecutors say the killing was carried out with the victim's consent. But they classified it as murder, not — as the defense argues would be appropriate — a form of mercy killing, arguing that the evidence indicated it was carried out at the suspect's initiative.

WASHINGTON -- People doing business with the city government in the nation's capital will soon be able to pick up free condoms, too. City health officials told The Washington Post they plan to install more than 50 plain white condom dispensers in offices frequented by the public. They include the District of Columbia Housing Authority and the departments of human services, motor vehicles and public works. The public school system already gives out 50,000 condoms a year.
Ivan Torres, the interim director of the city's HIV/AIDS Administration, said he wants condoms to be "as common as water fountains."
The goal is to pass out 550,000 male condoms, 45,000 latex dental dams and about 30,000 female condoms. |

Beautiful Women Make Men Irrational
POSTED: 10:04 a.m. EST December 16, 2003
A beautiful woman can make a guy irrational -- and now there's science to prove it. Researchers at McMaster University showed male students pictures of women, some of whom were said to be attractive and some not-so-attractive, as determined by the Hot or Not? Web site.
After seeing a very attractive woman, the men were more likely to make dumb choices. The Canadian researchers asked the male students to roll dice. If they rolled double digits, they were given a choice of taking $15 to $35 the next day or up to $75 after waiting a while.
The men who saw the attractive women were more likely to take the lesser amount. NewScientist.com said biologists call choosing immediate rewards to greater ones in the future as "discounting the future."
The researchers said they tried the same test with female students. But there was no lessening of intelligence among the women after looking at hunks. Men also didn't show a change in reaction after seeing pictures of expensive cars.
The researchers said men stop thinking about long-term consequences once they get slightly aroused and see a sexual opportunity.:10:

(7 September 1990, Sydney, Australia) Men seem to have an affinity for large trucks. What else can explain the actions of a 34-year-old thief who decided to take possession of the engine of an old Bedford tip-truck?
The truck was parked outside a glass recycling company in Alexandria. It generally takes three men to lift an engine block of this size, but our enterprising pilferer decided that the best way to remove the engine was from below, rather than the conventional out-the-top-with-a-crane technique.
He crawled under the cab and began to loosen the bolts.
Suddenly the engine block broke loose and landed on his face, killing him instantly. Police ascertained that he had at least one accomplice, judging by the pool of vomit found under a nearby bush.
An employee discovered his body early the next morning. The manager said that the truck was about to be scrapped. "If he had come and asked me for it, I would have given it to him."

DAYTONA BEACH SHORES, Fla. - December 26, 2003 — A man robbed a bank, then took a cab to a liquor store, where he got drunk before he was arrested two hours later, police said.
William F. Nutley, 56, was picked up trying to leave through the back door of the liquor store, Daytona Beach Shores Department of Public Safety Sgt. Mike Fowler said.
Nutley had robbed a Bank of America branch Tuesday by telling a teller that he had an accomplice who would shoot her if she did not give him money, Fowler said.
He then walked across the street to wait for a taxi to take him about 10 miles to the New Smyrna Beach liquor store where police found him and a portion of the stolen money, Fowler said. Police would not say how much was stolen.
Nutley was charged with robbery. |

Holdup note on check leads to arrest
Associated Press
SALT LAKE CITY - When robbing a bank, it may not be the smartest move to write the holdup note on a personal check. That's what led them to arrest two people here, police said.
Witnesses told police a man and a woman walked into a bank and handed a teller a note saying they had a gun and wanted money. The note was scrawled on the back of a personal check.
The robbers left the bank with $1,300.
Witnesses wrote down the license plate number of the getaway car.
Police said the name on the registration matched the name on the personal check used for the holdup note.
After they were arrested, the suspects allegedly told police they wanted the money to pay a drug debt and buy clothes and cell phones. |

NOVI, Mich. -- If only fish could read.
A five-inch fishing lure with three steel hooks comes with a label warning that the lure is "harmful if swallowed."
That's good enough for fourth place in the seventh annual Wacky Warning Label Contest.
The top prize went to a warning found on a bottle of drain cleaner. It says: "If you do not understand, or cannot read, all directions, cautions and warnings, do not use this product."
In second place is a label on a snow sled advising users: "Beware: sled may develop high speed under certain snow conditions."
The third-place slot went to a label on a 12-inch-high compact disc storage rack that warns: "Do not use as a ladder."
The contest is organized by the Michigan Lawsuit Abuse Watch.
Winners were chosen by listeners of a Detroit radio show (the Dick Purtan show on WOMC-FM). |

TAINAN, Taiwan -- Folks in Taiwan are wishing that the insides of a whale had stayed there. People were covering their noses and businesses came a halt after a dead whale burst because of a gas buildup. The 56-foot long sperm whale was being carried through city streets on a truck -- being brought inland after it was found beached during the weekend. Scientists were going to try to find out how it died.
Right in the middle of the street, the carcass exploded -- splattering its innards across the street. Experts believe the explosion happened probably because of gases building up in the dead mammal's stomach. Shopkeepers closed up, so they could sweep up the stinky mess of blood, blubber and entrails.

LONDON (Reuters) - A British retiree did not notice his brother had been dead for 18 months despite sharing a mobile home with him.
When Herbert Silver, 72, finally called police and told them his brother George, 75, had died, they went to the bachelors' home expecting to find a body. Instead they found a skeleton, British newspapers reported Thursday.
"I admit that I didn't go into his room for a few hours, a few days...well quite a while actually," Herbert Silver told the Daily Telegraph.
Silver said he had thought it a "bit odd" when his brother failed to emerge from his bedroom in the tiny home they shared in Blissford, southern England, but told the Daily Mirror:
"George liked to keep himself to himself, and to be honest so do I." A postmortem indicated George Silver had been dead for up to 18 months. |

DUBLIN (Reuters) - An elderly Irishwoman shared a room with her sister's corpse for up to a year and sometimes slept with it in the same bed, newspapers reported Tuesday.
Mary Ellen Lyons never told anyone that her sister Agnes had died, the reports said. Even their brother Michael, who lived in the same remote bungalow in rural western Ireland, did not know.
An inquest heard Monday that Agnes probably died in 2002 -- possibly in September -- at the age of 70.
However, her body was only discovered in August 2003 when Mary Ellen fell ill and had to be taken to hospital.
"I have tried to remember when Agnes died but I just can't remember," Mary Ellen said in a statement read out at the inquest. "I remember getting Christmas cards at Christmas 2002 but I cannot remember if Agnes was dead at the time."
The inquest heard the three siblings lived in "a world apart" and that the sisters were deeply religious.
After Agnes' death, Mary Ellen sometimes slept in the same double bed as the corpse and sometimes in the bathroom. Michael stayed in his own bedroom and the living room of the tiny house and never entered his sisters' room.
"There is no way that Michael would open the door of a woman's room," a neighbor told the inquest. "They wouldn't even watch the television if there was a woman on it. They were from a different era."

A woman who tried to use a fake $1 million bill to buy $1,675 worth of merchandise at Wal-Mart said it was all just a misunderstanding — she thought the bill was real.
You can't keep up with the U.S. Treasury," said Alice Pike, speaking from jail.
"All I've got is this," Pike said she told the cashier.
"I wasn't trying to pass off the bill," she said. "That's ridiculous."
A police report says Pike tried to pay for the items with the fake bill and even asked for change.
Prosecutors must decide whether to prosecute Pike on charges of first-degree forgery. |

BEIJING, China (AP) -- Chinese veterinarians have begun showing American-born panda Hua Mei sex-education videos featuring pandas mating to prepare her for "blind dates" with Chinese suitors, the official Xinhua News Agency reported Tuesday.
The 4-year-old animal, whose name means "China-America," arrived in China from San Diego in February. Now that her month of quarantine is complete, officials are hoping she will quickly mate with a panda at her new home, the Wolong Giant Panda Protection Research Center in southwestern China.
"We hope she can get pregnant by the end of March. But first of all, she should have some sexual education," said Wei Rongping, assistant director of the research center, quoted by Xinhua.
Because Hua Mei has been in captivity since she was born, she has not had the chance to observe the natural course of panda reproduction in the wild. So officials have shown her videos of mating pandas and taken her to see other pandas copulating, according to the report.
The report said that similar sex education courses given to other pandas in the center had resulted in natural matings.
Hua Mei has been assigned four prospective mates, including 15-year-old Zhuang Zhuang, 11-year-old Xi Meng, 12-year-old Da Di and 10-year-old Di Di, the report said.
"I do not know which of them will be lucky enough to mate our princess," Wei said. "It's all up to Hua Mei to find her own Mr. Right."
Hua Mei was born in 1999 to two giant pandas on loan from China at the San Diego Zoo.
The offspring of all pandas lent overseas are considered Chinese property and must be returned to China by age 3. But Hua Mei's trip was delayed for more than a year by the SARS outbreak and other complications. |

Law May Force Some N.M. Dogs To Wear Seat Belts
POSTED: 8:14 a.m. EST March 25, 2004
SANTA FE, N.M. -- Drivers in Santa Fe soon may have to buckle up all their passengers -- even the four-legged ones.
The City Council in the New Mexico city is considering a major rewrite of the animal control ordinance. The proposal would require that animals be restrained when riding in a car or truck.
Pet stores already sell doggie seat belts, but don't sell many. There's even a little booster seat for dogs so they can see out of the window.
The idea has won the approval of a City Council committee.

The ring was later recovered in a jailhouse commode, and will be sent to Littman Jewelers' corporate headquarters in Oregon to be melted down.
Flowers did not have a previous criminal record. She was also ordered to pay fines and court costs totaling more than $1,000.
The judge withheld a formal finding of adjudication, meaning Flowers will have a clean record if she completes probation without violation. |

Mother Had Lost Child Before During Childbirth
POSTED: 3:02 p.m. EDT April 7, 2004
CHICAGO -- Doctors say a rural Mexican woman used her farming skills to perform a Caesarean section on herself -- and delivered a healthy baby boy.
The effort is described as "heroic."
The authors of a medical journal report said there are cases of women performing Caesareans on themselves, but none where mother and child both survived.
The woman lived in a dirt-floor house with no electricity or running water and was alone when she went into labor with her ninth child.
There were complications, and the woman's experience slaughtering animals helped her perform the crude C-section. Having lost a baby during childbirth, she was determined to save this one.
She was later taken to a hospital, where a nurse closed the incision with an ordinary needle and thread.
The report on the 2002 incident appears in the International Journal of Gynecology and Obstetrics. |

HUDSON, Ohio -- The Hummer is downsizing -- to a kid-sized version.
The Ohio-based Little Tikes toy company is making a battery powered Hummer H2 for the junior adventurer. The pint-sized SUVs are meant for kids three and up and are made under license from Hummer's owner, General Motors.
Little Tikes' Clancy Lavins says Hummers are hot with grown-ups and they will be with kids, too. The junior Hummers headed for Wal-Mart and Toys-R-Us have slightly different configurations.
An updated Wal-Mart version will sell for $250, the Toys-R-Us one includes working walkie-talkies and will go for $300. |

High-Rise Dorm Idea Prompts Protests From Nudists
UPDATED: 4:22 p.m. EDT April 13, 2004
VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- Beach bums on Wreck Beach in British Columbia could receive far too much exposure if a proposed pair of high-rise dormitories are built on the cliffs above.
Bathers are trying to protect the privacy of the world-famous nude beach.
Protesters said if the University of British Columbia builds the 20-story residences, binoculars, Web Cameras and well-educated voyeurs can't be far behind.
Stephanie Gibson, 12, who's been raised in the buff on the beach, said, "It's mean for the university to do."
She said some students might take pictures "and put us on the Internet and send them to their friends, have a party with them." |

Teacher Is Highly Allergic To Peanuts
POSTED: 3:32 p.m. EDT April 22, 2004
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. -- A pack of Nutter Butter cookies landed a New Jersey sixth-grader a school suspension.
The father of Jules Gabriel said officials in South Orange suspended the 12-year-old earlier this month -- for allegedly threatening to expose a highly-allergic teacher to the peanut butter cookies.
The dad said his son did make a comment about having "something dangerous" -- but said the boy never claimed to have a weapon.
Loubert Gabriel said the teacher was never exposed to the cookies, and that the school district "mishandled this."
He said the boy has been kept out of school since April 2, pending a hearing next month.
Ingesting even a morsel of peanut can cause some people to suffer severe reactions, including death. |

Tired Of G-Strings, Lawmaker Tries To Ban Low Pants
POSTED: 7:29 a.m. EDT April 23, 2004
BATON ROUGE, La. -- How low can you go? A Jefferson Parish, La., lawmaker has filed a bill in the Legislature that would ban people from wearing low-slung pants below the waist, thus "exposing skin or intimate clothing."
State Representative Derrick Shepherd got tired of catching glimpses of boxer shorts and G-strings over the low-slung belt lines of young adults.
His bill would punish anyone caught wearing low-riding pants with a fine of as much as $500 or as many as six months in jail, or both.
An ACLU spokesman said the bill goes too far. He said, "I can think of a lot of workers, plumbers, who are working and expose their buttocks." |

Honeymoon Weekend Spent In Jail
POSTED: 10:11 a.m. EDT April 27, 2004
BISMARCK, N.D. -- Cory Harmon will likely remember his wedding night for all the wrong reasons.
Instead of a honeymoon, the new husband spent the weekend in jail.
Harmon and Danielle Kuntz married Friday in Bismarck. But he was busted a short time later on a bad-check warrant.
Police say an officer did a routine driver's license check of members of the wedding party. The officer thought someone involved in the ceremony was a suspect in an ongoing investigation.
It was a case of mistaken identity, but the check turned up the warrant for the groom.
Harmon was released on $1,000 bail Monday.
Kuntz said she was pretty ticked off when the cops hauled away her new husband. Now, the couple plans a honeymoon for this coming weekend.

Money Would Go For Sex Offender Treatment
POSTED: 11:38 a.m. EDT April 29, 2004
SALT LAKE CITY -- Utah strip clubs are fighting a new topless tax.
A new state sin tax is to go into effect in July.
Strip bars and escort services will face a special 10 percent levy, on top of income and sales taxes.
Sex-industry lobbyist and attorney Andrew McCullough is making a federal case of the topless tax.
He's asked a court to toss out the tax as unconstitutional.
McCullough contends the tax violates free speech rights -- and singles out one type of business.
Supporters of the sin tax say it will raise millions of dollars to treat sex offenders.

Pilot Falls Asleep In Air -- In Front Of Inspector
POSTED: 7:45 a.m. EDT April 30, 2004
TOKYO -- Falling asleep at the controls of a commercial jet is probably bad enough.
Doing it in front of a transport official on board for an inspection is even worse.
A Japanese airline pilot has been grounded while All Nippon Airlines investigates last month's incident.
It said the pilot nodded off twice on a flight. The airline said he started to doze off after the autopilot was engaged -- and woke up after a Transport Ministry official noticed and told the co-pilot.
The pilot started to doze again a few moments later, prompting the co-pilot to yell at him.
The airline said it's looking into whether the pilot was negligent or suffers from a sleeping disorder.
