Found out yesterday that my front struts ( a little noisy over bumps ) need replacement @ 20 T mile point. Dealer said the links were worn too. He SAID THE REPLACEMENT ONES FOR MY 2002 WILL HAVE A LARGER DIAMETER PISTON . Prats on order and to be replaced Nov 1 under warranty.Has anyone had any front end problems like this ? I can only imagine how costly this repair would be after warranty. He went on to say that he has seen this before. Side issue : they installed the brake shims as well ( to remove the floating caliper clunk ) and it is perfect now. Theydid it under warrantyas well. This dealer is awesome in many respects.

Let's hope our respective dealerships are as accommodating. Usually, struts/shocks are considered wearable items they are replaced routinely by the owner, not under warranty unless it can be shown they are really defective not just worn. Interested if the brake/shim fix will be a long term fix.

Yes, I have mine (front passenger side) replaced when car is still new. It is also covered under warranty.

Had my front right strut replaced around 10k miles. It appears the strut need replacing again at 17k! The strut emits a scrunching sound over bumps.

This has been a problem for the MDX (and Pilot). A mechanic friend of mine who works at an Acura dealership says that it's been a common issue due to the mac suspension set-up up front...weak.

I guess 'common' is what's in the eye of the beholder. Other than some noise cured by grinding off weld burrs, there have not been more than a few defective struts reported on here.
If it is the macpherson suspension, then many other SUV manufacturers (mostly imports) must be having problems.

I'm just passing on what I've been told...that is all. I do hope that a replacement is all that's needed cause I'm also shopping for an MDX, myself. ;)

Mine are now getting replaced next Tuesday with the links as well.I will let you know any further info I can find out.Iwas the original post of this problem. Cheers. p.s the brake fix of the shims has gone 600 miles now and the clunk is still gone. The shims are a good fix.

I had my front strut replaced around 20k miles, and they are making creaking noises again.

However, they may not need replacement this time. I was just chatting with the district service manager for my area (after my BBB Autoline lemon arbitration hearing, which is another story!), who told me that there is a new TSB out regarding the front struts.

Appartently, the steel body welds around the top of the strut tower have spurs on the inside. When the front struts are compressed or expanded greatly, these spurs rub on the top of the strut, causing the crunching noise. The solution is to remove the strut, grind down the spurs and then re-install the same strut. I haven't had it done yet, so I can't tell you whether or not it works.

That is hardly a new problem, and several on here have had the 'clicking' problem resolved by having the burrs (or spurs) ground off. But others of us have flooded the strut assembly with silcone lubricant with similar results.
