| Transmission RPM fluctuation, shuttering

Over the past several weeks I have read most of the posts about PRM fluctuations as well as transmission issues, including the solutions. I have 2 issues which may be the same issue. When coasting or in light throttle, while in 3rd or 5th gear the RPMs fluctuate between 1300-1500. This occurs at about 20 and 42mph. My second issue is that several times per week when the transmission is attempting to shift from 2nd to 3rd under light acceleration there is a "shudder" or jerking like the transmission can't decide which gear to pick. I took my 2002 MDX (38k miles) to the dealer and they test drove and of course couldn't duplicate, but insisted the RPM fluctuations was due to an EGR problem.
They replaced the EGR valve and on the way home I noticed I still had both the shudder and RPM fluctuations. I returned to the dealer the next day and did a test drive with the lead technician. I showed him the RPM fluctuation but couldn't duplicate the 2-3 shudder. They talked with Acura engineering and decided to change the transmission oil and change the clutch pressure control solenoid. I picked up the vehicle yesterday and still have both issues.
1) Does anyone have the 1300-1500 RPM fluctuation issue and was there a fix?
2) Has anyone had the 2nd-3rd shift shudder issue and how was it fixed?

| Had the exact same problem and the dealer replaced the EGR valve and said it was fixed. WRONG!!!!! Took it back again and again. I first reported in December of 2002 (41,000+ miles) that I was having transmission problems and they could never ever duplicate same. Finally in October 2003, my 2002 MDX now has 67,500 and just had the tranmission replaced, imagine my surprise when they told me that they had found what I had known for 10 months. Good Luck and I wish you the best!!! |

Yes, I had both problems. The dealer could not fix the flutter, noted the hard shifting but could not replicate the slamming from 2d to 3d (although it happened many times to me). It is my feeling that the dealer knew the transmission was failing, but could not replace it without replicating the problem.
We shortcut the process by trading in our '02 with the failing transmission for a new '03, which the dealer made possible via a very fair deal with us (we paid $5,500 to upgrade from a failing '02 with 25,000 miles to an '03 with 14 miles).
I wish you luck, but suspect that your transmission will eventually have to be replaced. |

My wife was drving the MDX and noticedthe transmission started to skip , RPM fluctuate etc and then the check engine light came on and then the D5 started to flash.
I had the dealer transport it on a flatbed and so far they said it was the "Linear Solenoid Valve" and that they were going to flush the transmission fluid and see if that solves the problem.
I am not too confident about this approach, but I'll play the game.
I' ll update later. |

I got the MDX back today from the dealer.
The report indicates code P1750, which indicates that the A&B Linear Solenoid or oil line failed.
They replaced Part number 28250-P6H-024 Presure Control Linear Solinoid Valve.
It seems to have fixed the problem.
I wonder if this did any long term damage? |

This is the reason I got on here today. My MDX is almost out of warranty and I wanted to see if anyone else had this problem so of course I'm doing the problem replies today. I have noticed this for a long time. I took in in for the shifting problem, where it seemed that it couldn't figure out what gear to be in, they couldn't duplicate the problem. I was affraid if I took it in for the rpm fluttering (as I call it) that it would be the same thing  .
I tried to expain it to my husband on what it was doing and what I said is it sometimes feels like someone is bumping me from behind to push me along. Now it's doing something new (it only has done it 3 times) but it sounds like I'm going over rumble strips on the side of the road. 1st time it did it I passed off as the road. 2nd time it did it I thought it had to do with the tires or suspension. 3rd time I noticed my rpm's were going wack-o. Could it be the same thing. I don't know.
I have almost 45,000 miles on it (43,500) to be almost exact and I know I need to get the transmission oil changed. Since other people are having this problem and it isn't my imagination I will bring it up to them.
Thanks for everyone's input. Now I know I have a problem, maybe they can fix it, I hope before it gets worse, and it is.

lmeans,
Welcome back to the forum (although it is unfortunate it is because of a problem). As you can see from this thread and others, there are potentially a number of possible causes for what you are experiencing. Certainly bring these issues up with your service department and if you plan on keeping your MDX for a number of years more, you might want to consider an extended warranty - if for no other reason than for peace-of-mind.

| I was having the same problem (amoung other problems) with my 02 MDX but got it corrected by getting an 03 Murano. I have never in my life ever been so happy with a vehicle as I have been with the Murano. Not ONE single problem!!! Better get an 03 while you can as this is the last year they are assembled in Japan! |

Update;
The symptoms returned on Monday 10/20, so I took it back to the dealer on Tuesday. They have ordered a new transmission. The service person said it was an internal failure.
If you are approaching the end of your warranty and experience any of the previously stated symptoms, get it to the dealer. I had 41k when this became very noticeable.

I'm the guy with the 2002 MDX 40K that wrote the original post on this section. I have had the EGR, linear clutch solenoid and transmission fluid changed, yet I still had the RPM fluctuations between 1200 - 1500 in 3rd and 5th gear. The 2-3rd shift was also a hard shift.
After returning to the dealer today, they indicated they would order a replacement transmission after speaking with Acura. I'll update after installed. |

I experienced the same sputtering and RPM issue with my 2001 MDX at 58,000 miles. Acura tried the EGR valve, but ended up replacing the transmission for me at no cost. I have mixed feelings as I am happy I didn't have to pay for the defective transmission replacement, but not thrilled that Acura is having these problems.
Dealer says replacement tranny only covered for 12k miles. |

perkdan,
I agree with you. Acura should have a longer warranty on the replaced transmisson. I was going to keep this vehicle longer, but now I am seriously considering making a change. I was going to wait for the redesigned MDX, but I will be past the 12K miles before that happens. |

| I had the problem with fluctuating RPMs w/ my 2001 but not the hard shift. In my case it was the idle controller switch and heavy/sticky deposits in the throttle body causing sticking of the butterfly. |

| Sorry, never noticed your post. I use Chevron,Shell, and Union 76, all Premium. Haven't noticed any difference. Can't tell waht was respoonsible for buildup. Now, at ~50K mi, I'm seeing more uneveness and beginning to wonder if a similar problem is back or if just maybe I'm entering the transmission problem list. We'll see. |
