I did a little bit of work on my 2002 MDX guages. I replaced factory bulbs with 8000k LED to make it look brighter. Looks very nice, but after seeing the one on a 2004 I really liked it. Can Tim find out if you can swap the 2004 cluster to a 2002.

On a pre-2004, If you replace the bulbs with blue bulbs do you get the same effect as the 2004?

There is LEDs behind the gauge cluster. You can replace them with a radio shack sauter kit and aftermarket LEDs. The led bulbs are extremly small, I don't know the size but it defineatly can be done.

My dealer says that replacing the stock bulbs with aftermarket ones could actually lead to short circuits or electrical problems. Anyone had any problems?

Would really like to reinvent this thread. Tim at one point said someone could give a replacement of the 01-03 cluster with the new 04 a try. I think I'm willing to give it a go..

What are your thoughts?
hondacuraworld
This is not gonna be something that I'll be able to get en masse, at least for a little while. I'm going to have to pull a sneaky to get one in as they're not easily had through regular channels ;)

But that means it's possible to replace pre-2004 with the 2004 cluster?

Nah, not at all :)

Once I get my hands on one, then I have to find somebody brave enough to take the plunge ;)

I doubt that will be a problem on this forum!! ;)
RonH
No, the problem will be how to decide which of the drooling wolves gets that nice piece of juicy meat. :D

May be a good thing. Tim posted here that a connector was different on the 04 cluster.

Let us know ... please.

If one should get the 04 cluster how do they transfer their mileage to the new gauges?

Hmm, intresting question. Without knowing the details of the clusters, I suppose it's possible the mileage is stored somewhere other than onboard the cluster itself, and the cluster simply displays that infomation on the readout. If that's the case, it would "transfer" automatically.

hondacuraworld
No, it doesn't transfer automatically, it has to be programmed into the cluster. I know of a local place that can do this.
RonH
Could this cause warranty problems with Acura? Can I assume the places that would reprogram the clusters will give you some kind of certification stating it was done correctly (legally) so you can prove you have accurate mileage when/if making a warranty claim? If so .. don't lose that paper.
hondacuraworld
Depends on the place I guess.....you can always place an odometer disclosure sticker in the doorjamb, or keep the old panel for evidence. Or, get a receipt stating what was done.

Diggin up an old thread....

So what happened? Did the retrofit work? Anyone know?
