Has anyone changed speakers in their regular system, what size and type did you use and did you notice any difference? Did you also change your amplifier, if so, does the factory unit have RCA jacks or DIN connectors? Or maybe you just connected an amp with speaker level inputs. Lastly, how difficult or how much did installation cost. I'd like to know all the details.

Thanks
What is the general opinion concerning the base sound - adequate, poor or horrible?

If poor, what are the best possibilities for improving sound via upgrades (e.g. speaker, amp, etc.)?

Although I am still waiting for my MDX, I have heard the system. I would rate it between "Above average" and "good"...

..."average" being your typical system found in a Honda Accord or Toyota Camry!

The system has BOSE speakers, they are not the best but better speakers will not make any difference without an amp upgrade. The stock amps usually use weak power sources etc. which make it fairly high distortion. So, you need to upgrade everything (amp+speakers) if you want better sound.

I consider myself an audio enthusiast...The BOSE system sounds good enough to me!
sorry, my earlier post was about the BOSE system. I cannot comment on the base system!

I'm OK with the base sound system in my MDX. The Hi frequency(tweeter) and the low freq(sub) sound much better than the ones in my 99 Honda Accord coupe EX V6 w/ premium sound. In addition, It also has a cassette player which Accord does not.

Note the issue over what size replacement speakers will fit the rear door. Apparently, the odd mounting ring for the rears precludes the use of a standard 6.5" speaker. Can anyone explain what the deal is with the crossover for the front component speakers? I would like to replace the factory crossover with an aftermarket crossover.
Just got the factory (Helms) manual, and learned a few thing about the Base (non-Bose) radio.
There is no real crossover for the front component speakers. The tweeters have a capacitor to block low frequencies- that's it! The rear door speakers are midrange with no tweeter at all. The front and rear speakers are driven by an amp in the head unit. There is a separate amp in the passenger rear under the trim panel that drives the subwoofer. It is connected to the rear door speakers, so the input is "speaker level" as opposed to line level. There is no relay- the power is turned on and off at the head unit- so I would assume you are not talking a lot of power here.
Several people have written posts indicating that they added an amp in the storage compartment where the rear headrests go. Has anyone looked into installing an upgrade in the present rear amp location? Has anyone found 6 1/2's that will fit the rear doors? Has anyone tried upgrading the speakers or subwoofer while using the existing amps?
Much useful information in the thread shown in my previous post ( http://www.acuramdx.org/forums/show...php?threadid=51) which discusses upgrading the Base stereo, but I would like to try just upgrading the speakers before I go to the trouble of adding amps. Besides, I hate to lose the handy storage area in back.
I replaced the base system recently, actually I had it installed since I'm not to good at that kind of stuff. Here's the system:

-Zapco AG360 (4 x 90)for the fronts and rears
-Zapco AG350 (1 x 350) for the subs
-Zapco SX-SL 5 band EQ, crossover
-Focal Polykevlar 165K2 seperates for front
-Focal Polyflex 165HC Coaxial for rear
-JL 2 x 12" W3 (CS212-W3) pro-wedge
-Monster cable throughout

The sound is amazing even with the stock head unit. I kept everything looking stock so no one gets any ideas by looking into the car.

For awhile I had the AG360 amp hooked up to all my stock speakers and it made a huge difference. If I was to recomend one upgrade, that would be it.

The JL's make the system pound, no distortion, just clean, rattle your brain bass.

So if you hear a system rumbling and you turn to see an MDX - hello, my name is Chris :)

Chris,

If the front and rear speakers are driven by an amp in the head unit, where does the Zapco AG360 fit? Upgrading the amp by itself sounds good from what you said.
Hello Crem de la SUV...In the base system the headunit amp is fairly weak. I put the speaker outs to a Hi-Lo converter which then goes to the Zapco SX-SL line balanced converter and 5 band equalizer. Through Zapco's "symbilink" I goto my amps, AG350 for 2 JL 12w3's and AG360 for front and rear Focal's.

The system is completely stealth, that's why I kept the stock headunit. No one would ever tell I changed a thing by looking into the vehicle. The subs are hidden by the cargo cover. The amps are in the storage area where you would usually put the rear seat headrests. The EQ is packed nicely into the arm rest.

:)
