My 03 X had this plastic burning smell from day one I purchased. It stunk up the garage after I pulled into it. The smell gets worse if I have been running the auto climate control. If I open up the hood, I can feel the hot air and the smell come out from the engine where there are a lot of black tapes wrapping around the hoses. Initially I thought this might because it is a new car. However, it is almost 4 months since I got it, it still does the same. So I took it to the dealer yesterday and they could not find anything wrong. The technician said he only smells a new car. I wonder has anyone experienced the same with their new X or does anyone think this is normal?

Thanks!

Check all around your exhaust manifold and make sure there are no wires or anything laying on them as that will cause theat burning smell
Warzau
Or check that not plastic bags were caugh on the exhaust system either.

I opened the hood and beamed down the engine compartment with my xenon bulb flashlight. Man, there are a lot of cables and wires there but did not see any on the manifold. However, I noticed a few drops of brake fluid on the exterior of the brake fluid reservoir. That discovery puzzled me because my x has only 2000 miles on it. Why there are brake fluid on the exterior of the tank? Could it cause the smell?

Thanks!

In any event, that ain't good. This should be investigated irrespective of the smell problem.

Just off the top of my head:
-- try to trace the trail of fluid to its origin and see if it's the cap or a connection.
--Check the fluid level. Is it low? (I've never had to add any in 3 years)
--attach a piece of clean paper towel in the area and see if you're getting fluid absorbed in a significant quantity over time. Helps find insidious leaks that don't accumulate or puddle anywhere noticeable.
