MAKUHARI, Japan (Reuters) - General Motors Corp will rename its Buick LaCrosse in Canada because the name for the car is slang for masturbation in Quebec, embarrassed officials with the U.S. automaker said Thursday. GM officials, who declined to be named, said it had been unaware that LaCrosse was a term for self-gratification among teenagers in French-speaking Quebec.
GM officials in Canada are working on a new name for the car, a sedan that will go on sale next year to replace the Buick Regal.
The mix-up is reminiscent of another GM vehicle with an unfortunate name. In the 1970s, GM exported its Chevrolet Nova to Mexico and other Spanish-speaking countries, only to be told that Nova translated into "doesn't go." Despite the name, and contrary to popular folklore, the car sold well.

RFLMAO!!! YOU think that is bad...Listen to this story...Sony one of the biggest electronics and storage manufacturer in the world also made a BIG BOO BOO...
When Sony was manufacturing DTF drives(superfast helical scan) tape backup system for the movie industry..They wanted to name one of the enterprise tape backup libraries to be called the
PETA-FILE(To the Japanese..they of course from an English context undertand that it means a Petabyte of Files) that this library can backup/store..
HOWEVER..when consulting with the U.S. market and distributor as to what they thought of the "COOL" name for their new tape library..Of course the folks here in the U.S. said..."Well uh...PETAFILE sounds to much like PEDOPHILE(which of course mean -one who has a sexual inclinations or relationship with a child..!!!):eek: :eek: :eek: :D
Needless to say..the embarassed executives at Sony..pulled the name and renamed the tape library PETA-SITE.
