Why this isn't getting more press is beyond me. I agree with Car Design News that "The Honda Odyssey is the most significant new production debut at a show dominated by concept cars". And has tremendous potential for the North American market.

IMHO, it is a much better implementation of a "wagon-like" 7 pax crossover vehicle than the Chrysler Pacifica (or anything else for that matter - at least until Mercedes unveils the GST)

quote:
"With features such as directional Xenon headlights, 7-passenger seating, CVT transmission, available All-Wheel-Drive, and an excellent 2.4L K-series i-VTEC powerplant (160, 190, and 200ps flavors), the vehicle looks to be a technological tour de force"

FYI, the JDM Odyssey is only related to the North American market Odyssey in that it is an offspring of the original ('95 - '98)Odyssey. Infortunately that Odyssey was an answer to a question that hadn't been asked yet, and thus was about 10 years ahead of its time (and about 50HP short as well).

Hi All:

___I love the front end and stylish interior but the rear end looks like the front of a Mack Truck. And what’s up with those monster control knobs on the dash? If they try and sell this as currently styled here in the states, I think they are going to lose customers myself. The retro square look won’t ever fit me just as the Honda Element, Pontiac Aztek, larger but square Scion are having, will have trouble in the market place amongst real world consumers. It kind of reminds me of Toyota’s failed Camry Station Wagon from a few years ago. The D-Pillar just didn’t match the rest of the cars flow or feel ... Would you have purchased an X if the rear end was cut off or shaped like this new Ody? The wife wouldn’t have anything to do with it and I have to concur in this particular case.

___Good Luck

Wayne,

Beauty, of course, is in the eye of the beholder. But Wayne, I don't quite follow some of you points.

It is interesting that you would make that comparison. I believe that Honda actually wanted to make the design more masculine than the previous Streams were - hence the "broad shoulder" body line that emulates the Volvo S80/S60/V70.

Since they don't sell this model in the USDM now, they can't really lose customers.

Well, the Element and Scion xB are both selling better than initial projections.

Scion SUV surprises Toyota with its sales
In trying to predict which of the two new Scion models would be more popular, a boxy SUV or a Euro-styled hatchback, Toyota Motor Corp. officials got it backward.

Early buyers of the Scion brand of youth-oriented vehicles have chosen the boxy xB over the xA hatchback by a 2-1 ratio, Automotive News reports.

And the Aztek doesn't have a straight line on its body, especially not the rear hatch area. It's sloping hatch was one of the many complaints about the design since it impinged cargo capacity so much.

Since the only functional difference between the MDX and the Pilot is the Pilot's squared-off rear hatch (very similiar to this new Odyssey) I would answer yes. I would have seriously considered the Pilot if it was available at the time of our purchase of the MDX. The Pilot is now also outselling the MDX (recognizing the price difference).

In addition, the rear hatch is not unlike most conventional station wagons (ala the Volvo V70 - which is generally considered a well executed design)
